Tongli, located on the shore of Taihu Lake and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, has a history of more than 1,000 years and is on the "Suzhou Must Visit List" in the hearts of many people.
Large and small lakes are dotted around, and rivers and ports are staggered...... Walking into Tongli Ancient Town, the first impression is that it is worthy of the "Venice of the East". Gentle light and shadow sprinkled on the river of the ancient town, the river bank is lined with towering trees, every household can pass the boat, and the stone bridges are vertical and horizontal.
Tongli is a living sample of the thousand-year-old inheritance of the cultural landscape of the water towns in the south of the Yangtze River, with a profound historical and cultural heritage. Zhou Chunhua, director of the Wujiang District Cultural Relics Protection Management Institute, said that Tongli is the ancient town with the largest number of cultural relics protection units in Wujiang District, with 2 national key cultural relics protection units, 4 cultural relics protection units in Jiangsu Province, and 17 cultural relics protection units in Suzhou City.
Among them, the Retreat Garden, one of the national key cultural relics protection units, is a model of small gardens in the south of the Yangtze River, attracting many tourists to visit with its exquisite design and elegant landscape. The buildings, rockeries, and waterscapes in the park are full of poetry and picturesqueness, making people forget to return.
In addition to the Retreat Garden, there are many well-preserved buildings of the Ming and Qing dynasties in Tongli Ancient Town, and the antique buildings and stone roads make people feel as if they have traveled back thousands of years ago.
"In recent years, Wujiang District has started with the revitalization and utilization of the former site of the Lize Girls' School in the Retreat Garden, a world cultural heritage, including the opening of an exhibition on the life of celebrities in the former residence of Chen Quzhi, and constantly shaping a model case of cultural and tourism integration. Zhou Chunhua said.
In addition to the revitalization and utilization of cultural relics, one of the major features of Tongli that distinguishes it from other Jiangnan water towns is that most of the old houses have been preserved, and the aborigines still live there.
Zhang Jinjun, chief of the Land and Spatial Planning Section of the Wujiang District Natural Resources and Planning Bureau, said that the Tongli Ancient Town Conservation Area is 1 square kilometer, and about 12,000 aborigines live in the scenic area. The biggest advantage of the integration of Jingshe is to better preserve the complete historical features and cultural precipitation of the ancient town. The lifestyle of "mellow water town, old Jiangnan" is vividly reflected in Tongli.
The real life scenes of the aborigines of the ancient town constitute a picture of the original ecological ancient town style. In the morning, you can also see residents washing vegetables and clothes by the river. Neighborhoods and alleys, just like a hundred years ago.
"For the aborigines who live in Tongli Town, they love the atmosphere of the ancient town from the bottom of their hearts. Zhou Chunhua said that the aborigines can not only appreciate the environment of the small bridge and flowing water, but also enjoy the dividends of the development of the tourism industry.
