Louis Slotin was a brilliant nuclear chemist who worked on the Manhattan Project, designing and building the detonating device for the atomic bomb. In the laboratory, he fought alongside nuclear research giants such as Oppenheimer. In 1946, while conducting an experiment, he accidentally triggered the nuclear reaction of the "Demon Core", was severely irradiated, and eventually died. He received up to 10 sieverts, four times as much radiation as one kilometer from the center of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima. Despite receiving medical care, his condition was incurable and he eventually died 7 days later.
