He was a fierce warrior to the point of purity. In his essays, the defiance of the New Culture Movement and the sadness of the Northeast 9/18 incident all imprint his profound humanist complex. He believed in freedom, and all his life he pursued an independent spiritual position to fight against the customs, so he lived out his attitude towards life.

Xiao Jun (1907–1988) was a member of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, a director of the Chinese Writers Association, and a Chinese writer. His original name was Liu Honglin, and his pen names were Sanlang and Tian Jun. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Xiao Jun has been engaged in the teaching of amateur literature and art among workers and participated in the Anti-Japanese Salvation Movement. He arrived in Yan'an in 1940, and during his five years in Yan'an, he served as a director of the Yan'an Branch of the All-China Literary and Art Circles Anti-Enemy Association, the director and officer of the Lu Xun Research Association, the editor-in-chief of the Literary and Art Daily, a teacher of the Lu Xun Art and Literature College, and also participated in the Yan'an Literary and Art Forum.

After the liberation of China in 1949, Xiao Jun continued to engage in literary and artistic research and creative work, and the Peking Opera "Wu Wang Fa Lu", the novel "The Mine of May" and "Past Times" were all works of his period.

During the Cultural Revolution, Xiao Jun was persecuted and imprisoned for 8 years. After smashing the "Gang of Four", he returned to the literary world and sorted out more than 800 old poems. In 1979, Xiao Jun attended the Fourth Congress of Chinese Literary and Art Workers and was elected as a member of the All-China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and a director of the Chinese Writers Association.

Xiao Jun was born on July 3, 1907 in Linghai City, Liaoning Province, when his mother committed suicide when he was seven months old, his mother committed suicide because he was beaten by his father, Xiao Jun grew up in an environment lacking maternal love, and was estranged from his father. In his childhood, due to his family's poverty, he only attended primary school.

In 1925, he joined the army in Jilin and entered the Balhu Barracks with the dream of serving the country, serving as a probationary officer, military and martial arts assistant. But soon the darkness inside the barracks disgusted him. At that time, the gendarmes had supreme authority and could eat, drink, gamble, accept bribes, and oppress the innocent at will. But Xiao Jun, who has a strong sense of justice, is difficult to reconcile with such a life, and he decides to "leave this black swamp, the stinking pit, and go his own way." He became fond of poetry.

Five years later, Under the pseudonym "Misan lang", Xiao Jun officially began literary creation, and together with underground COMMUNIST Party members and progressive youth, he carried out literary and artistic activities. Subsequently, Xiao Jun wrote his first vernacular novel, "Cowardice...", published in the Shengjing Times in Shenyang on May 10 of that year, which angrily exposed the atrocities of warlords who mutilated soldiers. In 1931, after the "918" incident, he officially began to engage in literary creation.

Xiao Jun had incomparably sincere feelings for Lu Xun throughout his life, and what he most appreciated was Lu Xun's independent spiritual stance, which became an important support for him to dare to resist the customs in the future. In 1934, Xiao Jun went into exile in Shanghai. During this period, he referred to the famous Soviet writer Fadeyev's "Destruction" and published his famous work "The Countryside of August" under the guidance of Lu Xun. Lu Xun not only personally wrote the preface to it, but also immediately fought back when some people accused the novel of being "not real enough". The heart of love is beyond words.

In May 1936, when asked by an American reporter about "what are the best writers who have emerged in China since the New Literary Movement" and "what are the best left-wing writers?", Lu Xun mentioned Xiao Jun. When a Japanese writer asked Lu Xun to recommend the works of several progressive Chinese writers, Lu Xun first promoted Xiao Jun's short stories. In this way, Xiao Jun quickly gained a foothold in the Shanghai literary circles.

On October 19, 1936, Lu Xun died of illness in Shanghai. According to Lu Xun's son, "After seven or eight o'clock, more and more people came to mourn, but everyone's movements were still very light, just silent mourning." Suddenly, I heard a loud bang on the stairs, and a big man stepped quickly through the door and went straight to my father's bed. There was no hesitation, no pause, no clichés and socializing, and before he fell into bed, shi broke the earth and cried. "This big man is Xiao Jun."

In 1938, Xiao Jun wore an old felt hat, a pair of half-worn shoes, and a walking stick, and came to Yan'an to find a spiritual rest. Sure enough, he found like-minded people: he dined with the CCP leaders on the playground of the Northern Shaanxi Public School. In the dusty wind, take turns drinking wine from a bowl, which is extremely luxurious. During this period, Xiao Jun often corresponded with the leaders, and often came to them to talk freely, sometimes for a whole day. When Xiao Jun came to Yan'an, he naturally had a sense of intimacy. But unlike other intellectuals, after rectification, most intellectuals began the process of conversion to varying degrees, while Xiao Jun still maintained a rebellious nature. In 1943, most of the writers were decentralized and experienced life, and Xiao Jun, because he could not stand the cold reception of the person in charge of the guest house, settled down as a farmer in one breath.

On March 3, 1944, the great man sent his secretary to persuade Xiao Jun to return to the city. Xiao Jun was deeply moved, and as soon as he returned to Yan'an, he visited Peng Zhen, vice president of the Central Party School, and for the first time solemnly proposed his wish to join the Communist Party of China. Peng Zhen felt that Xiao Jun, who had an extremely strong personality, could overcome his shortcomings, and it was not easy to make this request, so while expressing his sincere welcome, he earnestly proposed: "The basic principle of the party is that the minority obeys the majority, and the subordinates obey the superiors. Your overhead boss is sometimes not necessarily more capable than you, can you specifically obey? Xiao Jun thought about it for a moment and said, "No! If the resolution is right, I obey, if I think it is wrong, I absolutely cannot obey, I cannot comply, it seems that I am still not qualified for membership. So he withdrew his application to join the party.
