On November 19, 1931, Lin Huiyin held a "Lecture on Chinese Architectural Art" at the Peking Xiehe Hall, and Xu Zhimo, after learning of this news, flew from Nanjing to Beijing to attend the lecture.
Unfortunately, the China Airlines postal plane "Jinan" he was on crashed due to foggy weather in Kaishan near Jinan, and with a loud noise, "Kangqiao poet" Xu Zhimo died permanently.
Soon after, Lin Huiyin in Beiping learned of this news, and the unexpected death of her former friend Xu Zhimo made her feel shocked and heartbroken, but with it, Lin Huiyin also had a worry in her heart.
Knowing that Xu Zhimo had a small suitcase for his manuscripts and diaries, called the "Eight Treasure Chest", also known as the "Text Karma Box", on March 10, 1925, Xu Zhimo handed this box to his friend Ling Shuhua.
Inside this box, there is the diary of Xu Zhimo and Lin Huiyin falling in love during the British period, commonly known as the "Kangqiao Diary", which is also Xu Zhimo's most ardent expression of love for Lin Huiyin.
Lin Hui is very worried because of this, because the well-known love affair between her and Xu Zhimo is a taboo that she has avoided after marriage.
She knew that the contents of the diary would inevitably affect her own reputation and the marriage between her and Liang Sicheng. Therefore, shortly after Xu Zhimo's death, Lin Huiyin began to find ways to snatch the "Kangqiao Diary" from Ling Shuhua's hands.
So what did Lin Hui do to rob Kangqiao Diary? What kind of story is there between her and Xu Zhimo?
This story should also start from Lin Huiyin's acquaintance with Xu Zhimo.

<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="137" > and Xu Zhimo's acquaintance, love and separation</h1>
In 1904, Lin Huiyin was born in a famous family in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, she has been influenced by the traditional culture of the family since she was a child, and because she is the eldest daughter in the family, Lin Huiyin has always been favored by her father Lin Changmin.
Lin Changmin also personally taught Lin Huiyin to read and write, but also because of his father's careful teachings, Lin Huiyin fell in love with reading since he was a child, and also tirelessly wandered in the ocean of knowledge.
After Lin Huiyin grew up, her family sent her to church and began formal reading courses, where Lin Huiyin learned many majors and constantly enriched her cognition, so that year after year, she slowly developed a strong character. Lin Changmin had high hopes for his very well-behaved and intelligent daughter.
In 1920, when Lin Changmin went to England to give a lecture as the chief justice of the Beiyang government, he also took his daughter Lin Huiyin with him.
Subsequently, Lin Changmin also sent Lin Huiyin to St. Mary's Women's College for study, where Lin Huiyin quickly mastered English and received Western education and cultural influence.
Lin Changmin
It was also in this year that Xu Zhimo went to England to study in order to follow the thinker Russell, and successfully entered the Royal College of Cambridge University. As a special student, you can choose a course at will.
Xu Zhimo has always admired Lin Changmin, the chief justice officer of the Beiyang government in Europe, and during a visit to Lin Changmin, Xu Zhimo met Lin Huiyin.
Lin Huiyin is completely the ideal woman in Xu Zhimo's mind.
Lin Huiyin not only has the idyllic charm of the traditional boudoir, but also has the lively, cheerful and generous temperament of modern women. From Lin Huiyin's words and demeanor, Xu Zhimo could already feel the atmosphere of her books and fell in love with her at first sight.
Lin Huiyin, who was just 16 years old, also has a good feeling for the poet Xu Zhimo who is full of romantic temperament, because Xu Zhimo is older than Lin Huiyin, Lin Huiyin always mischievously calls Xu Zhimo "Uncle Xu", but the romantic Xu Zhimo can not care about the gap caused by the age difference, to be precise, in his eyes, love should not have the problem of age.
Xu Zhimo
The communication between Lin Huiyin and Xu Zhimo is mainly on the letters, Xu Zhimo has a very high evaluation of Lin Huiyin, and has written many love poems for her, and the two of them are immersed in the atmosphere of hot love like other couples.
At the same time, there is a reality gap directly between the two people, Xu Zhimo was already married to his wife Zhang Youyi under the arranged marriage of his family, and when he met Lin Huiyin, Xu Zhimo already had a son of more than two years old, and his wife was still pregnant for two months.
Xu Zhimo, who was deeply trapped in this love affair, immediately informed his wife of the deep love between him and Lin Huiyin when his wife Zhang Youyi came to England to accompany him, and with a very resolute attitude to divorce his wife.
Wife Zhang Youyi naturally did not agree with this request of Xu Zhimo, she was born in a traditional Chinese family, although she received a new education, but still deeply influenced by traditional Chinese moral concepts, understand that a divorced woman will be laughed at, Zhang Youyi can only find her family for help, hoping to persuade Xu Zhimo to turn back.
At this time, Xu Zhimo was already blinded by love, he ignored the strong opposition of his father Xu Shenru, and the strong dissuasion of his teacher Liang Qichao, and his attitude was very resolute, insisting on going through divorce procedures with Zhang Youyi, and at that time, his wife Zhang Youyi had just given birth to a second son for Xu Zhimo.
Zhang Youyi and Xu Zhimo
Xu Zhimo originally thought that after ending the marriage, he would be able to continue the romantic love between them without any worries with Lin Huiyin, but he did not want Lin Huiyin to no longer have the illusion of love for Xu Zhimo in his heart, and her heart was full of trepidation.
Lin Huiyin also asked his father Lin Changmin to write a letter to Xu Zhimo, truly stating his thoughts, thinking that the two could maintain their status as friends.
In fact, Lin Huiyin also knew in his heart that the amorous Xu Zhimo would eventually leave himself like his wife and look for a new confidant, so Lin Huiyin decisively gave up the love between him and Xu Zhimo, leaving only friendship.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="234" > and Liang Sicheng from acquaintance to marriage</h1>
In 1921, after Lin Huiyin finished studying in Europe for more than a year, he embarked on the journey back to China with his father Lin Changmin, and after returning to China, Lin Huiyin continued to complete his studies in the church school.
In 1924, under the introduction of Liang Qichao and Lin Changmin, Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng began to have mutual contacts slowly, Liang Sicheng had a simple and serious personality, often talked about his ideals with Lin Huiyin, and Lin Huiyin, who had a broad vision and agile thinking, also shared his insights abroad with Liang Sicheng.
The reason why Liang Sicheng chose architecture as his future lifelong study was actually influenced by Lin Huiyin. At that time, Lin Huiyin told Liang Sicheng that when she was studying in London, there was a classmate who was very good and could spend several hours a day on the drawing board, just to paint the house.
Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin
Lin Huiyin, who saw this picture, was very appreciative, she thought that this act of combining daily artistic creation with practical use was very great, and Liang Sicheng, who has loved painting since childhood, listened to Lin Huiyin's story and made up his mind to study architecture.
With the support of his father Liang Qichao, Liang Sicheng officially launched a pursuit of Lin Huiyin, and Lin Huiyin did not refuse to pursue Liang Sicheng's pursuit.
In May 1924, Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng went to the United States to study together, and at first the two entered cornell university in the United States for preparatory classes, and then entered the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to prepare for architecture.
Also in this year, Xu Zhimo met Lu Xiaoman, the wife of his friend Wang Geng, and Xu Zhimo disregarded human morality and common sense and insisted on breaking through many obstacles with his soul mate Lu Xiaoman and forming a partnership.
Liang Sicheng successfully entered the Department of Architecture, but Lin Huiyin gave up entering the Department of Architecture because architecture students need to stay up late often and it was inconvenient for a girl to do so. After thinking about it, Lin Huiyin chose to study in the Fine Arts Department, which is closely related to the Department of Architecture. However, during his studies in the Fine Arts Department, Lin Huiyin also took courses related to architecture.
Although in the basic skills of measurement and drawing, Lin Huiyin is not as good as Liang Sicheng, who is very professional, but she has her own unique ability in sorting out materials, often keenly capturing places that others cannot see, so as to discover more surprising literature, Lin Huiyin not only has aesthetic cultivation but also has the meticulousness of scholars.
In the spring of 1926, after studying hard, Lin Huiyin began to serve as an amateur assistant teacher of architectural design, and from 1926 to 1927, lin Huiyin was already an amateur teacher of architectural design.
When Liang Sicheng was studying at the University of Pennsylvania, he was influenced by an architecture professor, which gave him a strong idea to write a complete history of ancient Chinese architecture, and Lin Huiyin was very supportive of this idea and expressed his willingness to work with him to complete this great cause.
In the summer of 1927, Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. In August, Lin Huiyin entered Yale University and studied stage art design for half a year, while Liang Sicheng applied for admission to Harvard's Graduate School of Science and Art.
In February 1928, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin went to Ottawa together, because Liang Sicheng's brother-in-law was serving as consul general in Ottawa, so with the help of his brother-in-law, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin married at the consulate general on March 21, 1928.
Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin
After the marriage, the two, under the advice of their father Liang Qichao, set off for Europe to spend their sweet and romantic honeymoon trip, and the newlyweds who had planned to spend the whole summer together in Europe received an urgent telegram from their father Liang Qichao.
Liang Qichao said that he had arranged faculty positions for the two at Northeastern University, so he hoped that the two would return to China as soon as possible before the university started to prepare for the work.
In this way, in the summer of 1928, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin returned to China by train in Moscow.
At that time, Northeastern University was headed by Zhang Xueliang, and at that time, there was no architecture department in Northeastern University, so Zhang Xueliang entrusted the mission of establishing the architecture department to Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng to complete.
On January 29, 1929, Liang Qichao died of illness at the age of fifty-five, and Liang Qichao's death brought a great impact to Liang Sicheng, who had just established a family. After burying Liang Qichao properly, Lin Huiyin packed up his luggage with Liang Sicheng and returned to Northeastern University.
In August, Lin Huiyin gave birth to her daughter and Liang Qichao, named Liang Zaibing, and the birth of her daughter brought the breath of life to their deserted little family.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="235" > was seriously ill, but still did not forget to work</h1>
During the teaching period of Northeastern University, because only Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin served in the entire architecture department, the task of teaching was very heavy, and Lin Huiyin's body, because of overwork, coupled with the cold climate of the northeast region was very unsuitable, she finally could not survive, and fell ill in bed in the autumn of 1930.
After Xu Zhimo got this news, he rushed to Shenyang to see Lin Huiyin.
In front of the hospital bed, Xu Zhimo repeatedly persuaded Lin Huiyin not to be stubborn and stay in this place, her body would be destroyed sooner or later, and while her body was not completely destroyed, Xu Zhimo tried his best to persuade Lin Huiyin to go to Beiping immediately to see a doctor.
After xu zhimo's repeated persuasions, Lin Huiyin finally agreed to leave for Beiping to recuperate.
Lin Huiyin on the hospital bed
At the beginning of 1931, Lin Huiyin's condition did not improve but became more serious, after the doctor's diagnosis, Lin Huiyin was finally diagnosed with tuberculosis, when the doctor strongly demanded that Lin Huiyin immediately stop all the work at hand, in a quiet environment for recuperation, in order to slowly improve.
On the third day of the Chinese New Year, Xu Zhimo, who could not rest assured of Lin Huiyin, returned to Beiping from the south to pay homage to Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng and his wife, and specially visited Lin Huiyin.
At that time, Lin Huiyin's entire person had already shrunken cheeks, and the bones on his face were also protruding, and seeing this picture of Lin Huiyin lying on the hospital bed also made Xu Zhimo very sad, and his heart was very unpleasant.
When spring came, Lin Huiyin was specially arranged in Xiangshan for recuperation due to his serious illness, and Xu Zhimo also specially took his friends to visit Lin Huiyin who was ill.
Lin Huiyin, who was tormented by illness, also had a lot of loneliness and vulnerability in her heart, and Xu Zhimo's special arrangement made her mood relax a lot, and her condition gradually began to develop in the direction of improvement.
After more than half a year of treatment, Lin Huiyin's body has basically recovered. After his recovery, the doctor allowed Lin Huiyin to leave Xiangshan and go home to recuperate.
On the day lin Huiyin descended the mountain, Xu Zhimo also accompanied Liang Sicheng to meet Lin Huiyin with Shen Congwen and other friends. Several people also held a banquet for Lin Huiyin at the beijing library to pick up the wind and wash the dust for her.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="237" > plane crash and eternal separation</h1>
After the banquet was over, when Xu Zhimo said goodbye to Lin Huiyin, he also assured Lin Huiyin that he would attend Lin Huiyin's lecture on time.
On the evening of November 19, 1931, Lin Huiyin's lecture on the aesthetics of classical Chinese architecture held in Beijing was held as scheduled, and the small auditorium of Peking Union was brilliantly lit and full that night, when envoys and professionals from more than a dozen countries in China gathered together to listen to Lin Huiyin's lecture on the aesthetics of classical Chinese architecture.

On that day, Lin Huiyin had always believed that Xu Zhimo would keep his promise and come to see his lecture, but Xu Zhimo ultimately failed to arrive as scheduled.
Later, Lin Huiyin learned from friends that Xu Zhimo flew from Nanjing to Beiping by special plane in order to listen to his academic lectures, but encountered foggy weather on the way, and finally the plane crashed into the mountain and fell into the valley, and all the people on board, including Xu Zhimo, were killed.
Knowing the news that Xu Zhimo had unfortunately died in order to come to listen to the report meeting as promised, Lin Huiyin's grief was naturally self-evident. Subsequently, she immediately asked Liang Sicheng to rush to Jinan and specifically retrieved a fragment of the plane for her from the location of the accident.
It was a charred fragment that Lin Huiyin had been carrying with her until her death, when she hung it on the wall of her bedroom.
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="239" > snatch the Cambridge Diary</h1>
However, soon after, Lin Huiyin began to worry in his heart, because Xu Zhimo had told Lin Huiyin that he had written the letters and love letters of the two people in London into a "Kangqiao Diary", which specifically recorded the "Kangqiao love" of the two and collected them in his "Eight Treasure Chest".
This "eight treasure chest" had long been stored by Xu Zhimo in his friend Ling Shuhua, and on December 7, 1931, after Xu Zhimo's death, Ling Shuhua wrote a letter to Lin Huiyin on the pretext of editing the "Shima Xinzha", hoping that Lin Huiyin could provide a letter written by Xu Zhimo to her.
But Lin Huiyin made an excuse to say that those letters were now stored in the old home in Tianjin, and she firmly did not agree to publish these letters, so she would not give them to Ling Shuhua.
It was also at this time that Lin Huiyin began to plan to snatch the "Kangqiao Diary", because she naturally did not want the "Kangqiao Diary" to fall into the hands of others and be made public.
So Lin Huiyin asked Ling Shuhua for the "Kangqiao Diary", and Lin Huiyin also told Ling Shuhua that Xu Zhimo had told himself before he died that if he wanted it, he would give her the diary. After Ling Shuhua heard this, he reluctantly agreed to let Lin Huiyin come and get the diary two days later.
However, on December 9, when Lin Huiyin came to find Ling Shuhua, he found that Ling Shuhua deliberately used the excuse of going out, saying that she was very annoyed because of many things to deal with, and in a few days she would have time to rummage through Lin Huiyin's diary.
As a last resort, Lin Huiyin found Hu Shi, who had the status of a leader in the literary world, to come forward and beg Ling Shuhua, who at that time asked for books in the name of the editorial board, and Ling Shuhua did not want to shirk it.
So when Lin Huiyin was not at home, the 128-page "Kangqiao Diary" was sent to Lin Huiyin's home.
Ling Shuhua
After Lin Huiyin carefully looked at it, he found that the "Kangqiao Diary" sent by Ling Shuhua was actually much less key content. Lin Hui, angry and frustrated, quickly wrote a letter to Hu Shi to complain.
After Hu Shi saw the letter that Lin Huiyin had written to him, he once again demanded that Ling Shuhua immediately hand over all the detained diaries under the pretext that "the materials were scattered and inconvenient to study".
Under Hu Shi's tough attitude, Ling Shuhua finally sent the remaining part of Xu Zhimo's diary to Hu Shi's home at No. 4 Rice Depot Hutong on January 22, 1932.
After Hu Shi received the rest of the diaries, he handed them over to Lin Huiyin, and Ling Shuhua felt very sorry for Xu Zhimo after learning that Hu Shi had given all the diaries to Lin Huiyin. Because legally speaking, this batch of relics should be handed over to Xu Zhimo's widow Lu Xiaoman for safekeeping, but this eventually fell into the hands of Lin Huiyin.
After Lin Huiyin got Xu Zhimo's diary, he naturally planned to burn it, so no one knew what kind of content was recorded in the diary.
Lin Huiyin
As for Xu Zhimo's other relics, Lin Huiyin's attitude of being unsuitable for publication, and there is no need to rush to pass on these materials, and at present, "it is only collected, stored and preserved", an attitude mentioned in her letter to Hu Shi.
On November 19, 1934, Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng rode together to the south for geological investigation, and when passing through Xu Zhimo's hometown on the way, Lin Huiyin asked the driver to stop the car, she stepped out of the car, and in a dark night, she stood alone outside the car, thought for a long time, and finally turned around and returned to the car.
In 1935, Lin Huiyin also wrote the following paragraph in the article "Commemorating the Fourth Anniversary of Shima's Death":
"Staring at the dark platform, silently recalling many fragments of the past that are not continuous, until the life and death actually become a blur..."
<h1 class="pgc-h-arrow-right" data-track="240" > died of illness</h1>
After Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng married in this life, they experienced all kinds of hardships, whether it was poverty, disease, or pain, the two always persevered in each other and made great contributions to China's construction cause.
Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin have devoted their lives to the research and protection of ancient Chinese architecture.
From 1930 to 1945, Liang Sicheng and his wife traveled to 25 provinces and more than 190 counties across the country, surveying and mapping a total of 2738 ancient buildings.
Under the efforts of the two people, many ancient buildings have been inspected by them to gain the awareness of the whole country and even the world, so that they can get the greatest and most timely protection.
In the summer of 1937, Liang Sicheng and his wife discovered one of China's oldest wooden structures in the Wutaishan area of Shanxi, which was tested to be the main hall of Foguang Temple built in the Tang Dynasty.
Five days later, the two men who had completed the basic structural test of Foguang Temple left Mount Wutai, and when the two returned to the nearby urban area, they learned that on the day when The oldest wooden structure in China was seen again, the July 7 Incident broke out, the war broke out, and the Chinese people fell into misery.
Later, Lin Huiyin also said this in a letter to his daughter:
"At the moment, we should be brave Chinese, not afraid of anything, and determined to do anything."
Lin Huiyin's fierce character was also confirmed during the War of Resistance Against Japan, when Lin Hui, suffering from tuberculosis and suffering from illness, also insisted on following the Southwest United Congress in Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing and other places.
In a difficult environment, Lin Huiyin and her husband Liang Sicheng jointly operated a wartime academic organization, and after the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, everything was settled, Lin Huiyin still did not stop working, dragging his sick body into the construction of new China.
But by 1953, Lin Huiyin's condition began to deteriorate rapidly, she had been bedridden, and on April 1, 1955, without fighting the disease, Lin Huiyin died in Beijing Tongren Hospital at the age of 51.
After Lin Huiyin's death, Liang Sicheng also used samples of the monument to the People's Heroes Monument to carve and personally designed a tombstone for the late Lin Huiyin to express his condolences to her.
