Chen Xiaoduo: Be a simple person, do the art | interview to the extreme

On March 28th, at the Fifth National Commendation Conference for Young and Middle-Aged Virtue and Art Shuangxin Literary and Art Workers, Chen Xiaoduo was awarded the title of "National Young and Middle-Aged Virtue and Art Shuangxin Literary and Art Workers", and as a representative of literary and art workers, he read out "Casting the Soul Hongde, Shouzheng Innovation, Singing Songs for the Times and the People - Proposal for the Fifth National Commendation Conference for Young and Middle-Aged Virtue and Art Shuangxin Literary and Art Workers". After the commendation meeting, Chen Xiaoduo returned to the tense and busy daily life. "Blue Sky Praise" singing the spirit of aerospace is being staged, and "Forerunner", which carries forward the spirit of struggle of the people in the new era, and "Sing nanniwan", which praises the spiritual genealogy of the Communist Party of China, are also being rehearsed intensively.

She recalls the reading of the proposal on the day of the commendation meeting, and she is still very touched. "I was a little choked up when I read it, because the initiative was written into the hearts of those of us literary and art workers. Do you really have a sense of mission in your own artistic field? Can you personally let the development of art change because of you? I think that if literary and artistic workers in every field have such thinking, our artistic achievements in various fields will definitely be more and better. For more than 20 years, Chen Xiaoduo has been practicing her mission as a literary and art worker under such a positioning.

Guard the original intention with "500 times× 10,000 hours"

Chen Xiaoduo entered the China Opera and Dance Theater as soon as she graduated from the China Conservatory of Music, where she rehearsed longer than at home. For more than 20 years, Chen Xiaoduo has performed many wonderful plays such as "Mulan", "Du Shiniang", "Song of Youth", "Red River Valley", "Song Qingling", "Lin Huiyin" and many other wonderful plays, among which Chen Xiaoduo served as producer and starred in the opera "Lin Huiyin", which premiered at the box office of more than one million, and successfully went abroad to tell chinese stories to the world. "Lin Huiyin" is also very popular among young people, and the aria "Lotus Lantern" is called "Aria of Spitting Blood on the Wall" on the B station. Chen Xiaoduo's colleague Chu Xu said that this aria not only made the audience sigh, but also impressed by this difficulty for us who are professional singers. In her eyes, Chen Xiaoduo had an aura. "Her musical literacy is particularly good, and she learns the score very quickly, and she can remember it after singing it a few times." And the adaptability is particularly strong, the director said anything, she can do it immediately. We always say that this is called the grandfather to appreciate the meal. ”

Is talent more important, or is hard work more important? Chen Xiaoduo feels that obsession is talent. "If a person is really very interested in a thing, it must be that there must be some special talent in this matter. Because interest makes people willing to overcome all difficulties. Chen Xiaoduo had to cut every word or sentence of his line for several years. If you can't learn a song 500 times, repeat it 500 times. She has such perseverance because she feels that she really likes opera, and she will forget the hard work and just think that she can achieve better. The writer Gladwell pointed out the law of "10,000 hours" in the book "The Alien": "The genius in people's eyes is extraordinary, not because of superhuman talent, but because of continuous effort." 10,000 hours of tempering is a necessary condition for anyone to go from ordinary to world-class master. But Chen Xiaoduo said: "10,000 hours is really not enough, it needs lifelong learning and lifelong cultivation." Like yesterday after singing a song I still have to summarize what my problem is, where can I be better. ”

In Chen Xiaoduo's understanding, virtue and art shuangxin is to be a simple person, and then to do art to the extreme. The process of continuous practice is more of a contest with one's own heart and strict requirements for oneself. Because she doesn't make horizontal comparisons, she doesn't have the confusion of fame or traffic. Talking about how to be upright in the literary and art circles, Chen Xiaoduo said that when we are particularly full in our hearts and pursue something, we always think about how to improve art and create better works of art. "My soul is sought, some is laid out, and there is no room for those low-level fun or sensory stimuli, because the focus of my life is on art."

Changed your mind? She said, "Taoist priests are going down the mountain to join the world."

After work, Chen Xiaoduo returned to campus again to pursue master's and doctoral studies. The three-year master's study career at the Opera Research Institute of Peking University made Chen Xiaoduo realize that the focus of his attention should not be on his own achievements, but on the development of the industry. At the graduation ceremony of the 2012 master's degree, Chen Xiaoduo spoke as a representative of outstanding graduates: "Opera is a far-reaching proposition in contemporary times and opera in China, but it should be the landing point for every opera practitioner to think and work hard. I'm going down the hill, carrying this to illuminate my proposition. ”

The change in the realm of thought has given her more courage to break through boundaries, and "Lin Huiyin" was completed under the drive of such a sense of mission. Tian Yan, vice president of the China Opera and Dance Theatre, and Chen Xiaoduo have been partners and old friends for many years, and are also the supervising producers of "Lin Huiyin". He understood that Chen Xiaoduo wanted to do something that truly represented the thinking and aesthetic content of contemporary people. "The preparatory process for Lin Huiyin was very hard. I'm a producer, she's a producer, and she's thinking about how to make the stage better, and I have to think not only about the presentation of the stage, but also about communicating and solving the problems behind the stage, so we often have different opinions, and then everyone tries to find a balance to continue to move forward. In the early stage of the art fund filing, the two of us went to the defense, the first time did not pass, and continued to revise, try to improve, and later passed. These behind-the-scenes stories record our persistence along the way. Everyone is for a goal, to be able to base opera in China, so that Chinese opera can have its voice in the world. ”

At present, Chen Xiaoduo is studying for a doctorate at the China Conservatory of Music while working, and continues to think deeply about the contemporary development of Chinese opera. How can high art sink the market to benefit more ordinary people? Chen Xiaoduo feels that, as the poet Yu Jian said, "A poem is like a tower, and a really good poem has seven levels of floating slaughter", in fact, opera also has multiple realms. From the surface to the inside, is it that the artistic expression of each layer has been achieved and perfected? "I once talked to the composer Jin Peida about this problem, and he said that good works should pay attention to everyone, not just a small number of people." As an actor, we must have all the audience in mind, and every audience has the position and freedom to interpret the role, and what the creator has to do is probably to continuously expand the spatial dimension of expression. Chen Xiaoduo's recent rehearsal of "Forerunner" is an opera that ponders the confusion of contemporary people and really cares about what contemporary people care about. "The performance and core of this play are very contemporary, and I think the sense of reality is a wind change in the future opera, and the texture of the fireworks is a very beautiful thing."

To transmit and pass on art is to guide the direction of light

"Becoming a teacher has been a matter of these two years." She was approached by a Peking University teacher who had taught Chen Xiaoduo and wanted her to give her students a public election class, "The Charm of Opera." The transition from actor to teacher requires a lot of preliminary preparation, and Chen Xiaoduo is revising the courseware every semester according to the specific situation and feedback of the students. At the end of the class, to her surprise, the students sent handwritten cards to thank Teacher Chen for the wonderful opera she brought, and even more grateful for the touches she brought, and the students wrote: "We will go all the way with the purest love for opera!" ”

Chen Xiaoduo believes that teachers are people who light up life. "When you're groping in the dark and don't know where to go, the teacher just takes your hand and tells you that there's light there and there's people in the distance. This kind of inheritance and transmission has always touched me, and it is also a kind of understanding of the meaning of life. "The meaning of opera work is also to light up the light of life. Over the years, Chen Xiaoduo has always been present in public welfare volunteer activities. She recalls that the first time she participated in literary volunteer service was during the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. "At that time, we rushed to Wenchuan for the first time, the disaster site had not been cleaned up, and even the corpses pressed under the rubble were still faintly visible, and I stood on the stage set up in the field at the foot of the mountain with tears in my eyes, singing the excerpt "I Hope" from Mulan for everyone: I hope, this is last night's nightmare... The song echoed among the green mountains and rivers that were still beautiful on one side, and also lingered on the rubble of the collapsed buildings on the side - it was the most special performance in my life... A reporter down said to me, you see, the faces of these disaster-stricken people, after you performed, you feel that they have 'vitality' in their eyes. When I heard this, I was suddenly shaken: it turns out that my profession and my singing voice can still have such a value embodiment, and I can really use my own unique way to care for others. It was this experience that made Chen Xiaoduo realize the soothing power of art. In the process of transmission and inheritance, Chen Xiaoduo truly felt the unique sense of value as a people's literary and art worker.

One person's power is very limited. There are also many young opera singers in the China Opera and Dance Theater, who grew up with opera. "Passing on the band is a tradition in our theatre." Liu Jiaping, deputy director of the opera troupe, said: "Xiaoduo grew up in such an environment, and now as a 'young old actor', she has been helping young actors learn and develop. "Chen Xiaoduo feels that this kind of warm transmission is very important, so as long as it can be done for future generations, she will try her best to do it." Our classic and excellent repertoire needs to be passed on from generation to generation, which is our mission. ”
