Borderless workshop

Yang Xiaoyan

Artistic Director of Twenty-One Space Art Museum

Professor, School of Arts, Sun Yat-sen University

It is not so much that Lei Zhenhua is an artist as that he is an engineer; rather than an engineer, it is better to say that he is a master of dismantling machines; rather than a master of dismantling machines, it is better to say that he is a player who reorganizes various dynamics; rather than a player who reorganizes various dynamics, he is an artist who shines with warm light or some light from the inside out. He loves all kinds of moving machines. For example, he has been passionate about model aircraft for many years; not only is he enthusiastic, he plays model aircraft at a level that is almost professional. But in fact, he is a love, such as a flying machine that rises in the air and can be skillfully controlled. Because of his love, his studio became a real workshop, with all kinds of tools, all kinds of large and small engines, cars, motorcycles, model airplanes, and so on. The reason is simple: if you have played with something enough, you will disassemble it, and the parts will be piled on the flat ground and become a device that is not a device. This requires the engineer's common sense, but throws away the engineer's construction function and turns to "destruction" - in fact, it is a game of play!

Lei Zhenhua has been painting abstraction. Still, abstraction seems too conceptual. He has been piling up pigments and various materials that can be put together. Suddenly he painted abstract ink. Of course, a little understanding, it is found that his abstract ink is not drawn, but a kind of manipulation: using an unmanned aerial vehicle to drag a long brush, point the ink, and then fly to the top of the huge rice paper, constantly shaking, using ink with dots or lines, leaving a record of "flight" on the paper.

His studio is a workshop, complete with tools, and all kinds of disassembly things, such as various large and small engines, and so on. I think he has to face such a workshop, he has to be in it, he has to forget himself, and then he can find some kind of ineffable stimulus in it. Then, disassembled, or reassembled, or manipulated, or tapped, or assembled, and the result, he said, was "art." Therefore, Lei Zhenhua's true identity is an artist, an "nameless" artist who is always playing and enjoying endless fun in the process of playing. He doesn't care about fame at all, he only cares about how to play to really enjoy himself. As you can imagine, the scene of the exhibition is also a workshop. This proves that Lei Zhenhua's art workshop is inherently boundless, inherently boundless, inherently undefinable, like his art.

This feature of Lei Zhenhua obviously also affected his students, who were equally keen on experimentation and having fun in experiments, did not focus on so-called themes, did not easily identify with recognized shapes, and imposed a sociality that was considered important to creation, but more in the depths of their personal hearts to find a workshop, a workshop of thinking and creation.

Since it is a workshop of thinking and creation, how can we set boundaries for it? Therefore, Lei Zhenhua's workshop is boundless. His students' workshops are probably boundless.

is the preamble.

Preface

Preface II to the exhibition

It is a workshop and a testing ground

Hu Bin

Dean and Professor of the School of Arts and Humanities of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts

Lei Zhenhua is an artist who has received professional training from the Academy of Fine Arts and is in the academy system, but it is difficult to be positioned. His early abstract paintings emphasized the power of color and brushstroke movement, and later gradually incorporated elements of numerous mechanical parts, which stemmed from his obsession with machinery, especially off-road motorcycles and aero models. The picture became a testing ground for his interpretation of other "amateur pursuits"; it was accompanied by his strong interest in celestial movement, cosmic space, and multidimensional worlds. His art is increasingly moving towards a certain industrial sense, like a workshop full of various machines and tools; his cross-border is not a movement between gentle and elegant "light media", but a "battlefield" with a heavy breathing body. He carried out expeditions of body and machinery, philosophy and action in the vast workshops he had opened up without borders.

This attitude of seeing art as an action closely related to one's own life experience and a borderless experiment also influenced his students. Several of the students exhibiting this time are already the best among young artists, and their works are diverse in orientation and appearance, which is due to open experimentation; but if you want to summarize some commonalities, the manifestation of physical experience and the perception of life, the study of multiple materials and the observation of the experimental process are undoubtedly clues that can be traced. This is an invisible "production structure" connected by rustic work and a spirit full of heat, and it can also silently affect more people.

21 Space Art Museum has launched such a teacher-student exhibition for the sixth time, which is not a teacher-student friendship in the general sense, but a concern for the artist's creative state and the growth mechanism behind it. Through this series of exhibitions "××× and His Students", we hope to present the new phenomenon of the changing academy and the artistic ecology under the influence of this new phenomenon.
