Shi Weijian was born in Huai'an County, Jiangsu Province in March 1935, his hometown was the old liberated area, and the revolutionary art activities of the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army strongly attracted the young Shi Weijian and sowed the seeds of art in his heart.

In 1952, Shi Weijian graduated from the training hall and became one of the first young actors trained by the Shanghai People's Art Theater and began his stage career.

In 1953, Shi Weijian actively responded to the call of the organization and went to the front line in North Korea to comfort the Chinese People's Volunteers and perform the drama "Liu Hulan" for them.

In 1956, Shi Weijian was transferred to the Central Experimental Theater, where he was guided by the famous director Sun Weishi and some senior artists, and played the main roles in dramas such as "One Servant and Two Masters", "Peach Blossom Fan" and "Fenshui Long Flow", which were loved by the audience.

In 1981, he played the male protagonist Luo Qun in "The Legend of Tianyun Mountain" directed by the great director Xie Jin. The film tells the story of 1957, when the intellectual Luo Qun was beaten as a rightist, his fiancée Song Wei left him, and Song Wei's classmate Feng Qinglan formed a family with him in times of crisis, and the two survived the difficulties together.

According to Xie Jin's request, Shi Weijian interviewed a number of people with similar experiences to Luo Qun before the performance, observed their speech and behavior, and at the same time connected with his own life experience, and finally played the role. "The Legend of Tianyun Mountain" caused a huge response after its release, and won many awards such as the 1st Golden Rooster Award and the 4th Hundred Flowers Award for Best Feature Film.

After filming "The Legend of Tianyun Mountain", Shi Weijian returned to the stage and played Sun Yat-sen in "Sun Yat-sen's London Martyrdom".

In 1983, Shi Weijian collaborated with Xie Jin in the movie "Qiu Jin", playing Sun Yat-sen again.
