Indeed, in the face of complex natural objects, how to transform the scene in front of us into the art of painting on paper has stumped a large number of art lovers who love sketching. Some enthusiasts hold the pen for a long time and refuse to write, as if they have no way to start, dare not start, and do not know where to start drawing. It seems that there is a saying called "starving the timid to die of the bold", although it is not necessarily correct, it can actually be understood in this way. I remember a few years ago, I took students to Pu'er, Yunnan Province, sketching, there is a student from Shandong, is a business owner, never took a brush before, she began to stare at the teacher how to draw, and then under my encouragement and guidance, she finally picked up the brush directly to hook the line, although the line of the hook is crooked, there is no solid modeling foundation, but her courage is commendable. From this back and forth, after more than twenty days of sketching, she actually had several sketches that she could still get her hands on, so she was so happy that it was not easy. So, how to sketch? How to lyrical images? How do you express your emotions and understanding of nature? Here, based on my many years of sketching practice and experience, I will explore the following aspects.
1. Be keenly observant
It seems that there is a lyric that reads: "Life is not only about the present, but also about poetry and distance." In fact, a meaningful life sometimes feels short, and a meaningless life may feel very long. People's life will experience countless hardships and hardships, experience the cold and warm of human feelings, the cold of the world, but also experience the joy of moving and warmth, pursuit and success. Gain calmly, lose indifferently, fight for the inevitable, go with the flow, not discouraged when sad, not forget when happy. All these philosophical words are telling you, turn around, look at the world from a different perspective, and maybe you will find that there is no beauty in life, but a lack of discovery. And how to find beauty, which requires a pair of keen eyes, just rely on the eyes is obviously not enough, because everyone has a pair of eyes, why some people can find beauty, some people can never find beauty?

It is not difficult to say, it is estimated that you can do it with a pair of wise eyes. When we sketch, we must do: First, to clarify the purpose of our observation, what do you want? Observe with questions, observe with feelings. Second, cultivate your own interest in objects, if you have no interest in natural objects, then you are indifferent to good scenery, how can you bother to observe it. Third, understand and find the essential characteristics of the object, and then establish your observation method, through subtle search, to find the characteristics of the object that are not easy to be discovered. Fourth, through the objects in front of you, search your mind for whether you have seen anyone else paint, whether it is ancient or modern, or contemporary artists, you must quickly go through it in your mind. As the saying goes, "Know thyself and know the other, and never lose a battle." Only when you reach a certain level of familiarity with the object will you further discover the greatest characteristics of the object and the beauty of the object, and your "sensitivity" can be gradually cultivated.
Sophistication and elegance are hidden in your eyes. That kind of unintentional outpouring is the unique atmosphere that your long-term cultivation has invaded into your bones, which can be seen as the artist's unique temperament and endowment, and you will eventually learn to recognize everything in front of you and behind you.

2. Have a solid modeling ability
Solid modeling skills also need to be cultivated during the long process of painting. I have seen some famous painters who still can't draw a line when sketching, holding an eraser, painting and painting, painting and painting, unable to grasp the main features of the object, and the proportions are completely out of control. Even painting a flower and a leaf takes a long time. Some people will ask, then these famous painters can not sketch, why is the usual creation so wonderful? Quite simply, a painting in the studio can be ground for a long time, no one knows, and through many modern technologies such as computers, it is not difficult to complete a manuscript. However, in the face of natural objects, in public, it is necessary to draw objects directly and accurately on paper, and usually develop the habit of relying on other technologies to solve modeling problems, but at this time it is impossible. Therefore, our usual creation of the manuscript should also try to rely on their own hands to complete. Another problem is not to rely entirely on the copy table to tick the manuscript, in the long run, you originally have a certain modeling ability, will gradually disappear, when faced with sketching, how can the object modeling let you write at will?
My teaching method is to let students pick up a brush to sketch at the beginning. 3. Be in a good mental state
When it comes to sketching practice, few people mention or ignore the mental state of the artist. We all know that no matter what you do, you are in a bad mental state, you may not be able to do things, or you may not do a good job, or even turn a good thing into a bad thing. The same is true of sketching, with a poor mental state to sketch, you are likely to paint a very flexible and beautiful flower without any life, and paint a strong and powerful leaf soft and collapsed, as if you were sick. The sketches that come out in this way obviously lose their original objectographic characteristics and will not show artistic beauty. Therefore, when we sketch, we must maintain a good mental state, maintain a passionate heart to dialogue with nature, communicate, and listen to the most beautiful voice of nature. Seeing the most beautiful object of nature, you will have a mood that cannot hide the joy and excitement in your heart, and you want to be eager to express it, praise it, and write about it.
Many theorists often talk about the spirit of pen and ink, but in fact, the spirit of pen and ink is more reflected in the mental state of the artist himself. What kind of state, what kind of personality, what kind of painting is naturally drawn, what kind of article is written, this is beyond doubt. We say that painting is like its person, and writing is like its person, and this is the truth. The height of the work of art is the "inward" of man, and it is the most tacit expression of the world that is constantly in dialogue.

4. Be superhuman in understanding
Some viewers often lament that the flowers on this painting are more beautiful than the flowers in reality, and the trees on this painting are more spiritual than the trees in reality. This is because the painter has sublimated and refined the scenery in front of us when sketching and creating, pouring out the painter's feelings and the refinement of subjective feelings about nature. Therefore, it is necessary for us to advocate nature, revere nature, cultivate our own feelings about the beauty of nature, and understand the objective law of the ever-changing nature.
In nature, there is nothing strange, only what you can't see, nothing you can't think of. That is to say, everything you think, nature can have, although this may sound a bit exaggerated, but it is true. Therefore, in the face of natural objects, you can exaggerate, you can refine, you can generalize. This is the power that the art of painting gives you in terms of subjective feelings, objective does not exist, your subjective feelings can exist. 3. Nature is the teacher, cultivating daily life
There are many ways to read, we can do it little by little according to our own conditions, little by little accumulation, but combing the traditional context and enhancing our theoretical cultivation has become a compulsory course for artists. After that, we began to take nature as a teacher and enter another field of vision for self-cultivation, that is, sketching. Huang Binhong's teacher, Zheng Shan, once said: "Without the creation of the teacher, without the wonder of heaven and earth, there is no ingenuity in the painting." Huang Gongwang of the Yuan Dynasty once wrote in the "Tips for Writing Landscapes and Waters": "In the middle of the leather bag, the brush is included, or in a good scene, and when you see that the tree is strange, you should write it as a model."
