Connecting Zhejiang University, Hangzhou and Yue opera

Since the successful holding of the first annual drama in 2018, the Student Yue Opera Club of Zhejiang University has been rated as one of the "Top Ten Societies at the University Level" for four consecutive years. This community with "Yue opera" as the carrier tells not only the story of opera, but also the story of The shore of Xizi Lake and the story of traditional culture.

The violin concerto "Liang Zhu", adapted from the tunes of Yue opera, is the melody that accompanies the teachers and students of Zhejiang every night, and "Liang Zhu" sounds in the classroom and library, representing the end of the day's study and work.

The first annual drama chosen by the Yue Opera Society is the new version of "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", which is a classic of Yue opera. Disguised and disguised, to study in Hangzhou, Hangzhou's Wansong Academy under the mountain, between the flowing water, created a love legend of "high mountain flowing water meets zhiyin", so that Hangzhou and the story of the butterfly.

Origami drama "From Wansong Academy to Qiushi Academy"

In order to welcome the arrival of the Hangzhou Asian Games, the members of the Yue Opera Society prepared a "folding play" and sketched a "butterfly" on the map of Hangzhou. From Wansong Academy to Qiushi Academy, the starting point is the place where the story of the first annual drama "Liang Zhu" takes place, and the end point is selected at the Yuquan Campus of Zhejiang University. A huge "butterfly" has connected many Yue opera excerpts such as "Lu You and Tang Wan" and "The Legend of the White Snake" in Hangzhou.

"Classical is new", this is the slogan of the Yue Opera Society itself. "Other people can do original tracks, why can't we?" With this mentality, they filled in new words in the traditional singing rhythm and created the "Yishan Q&A". Zhejiang University's "Western Expedition of the Wen Army" to Yishan, Guangxi, was both plagued by malaria and threatened by air raids. On this road of westward migration that has endured hardships and hardships, the old principal Zhu Kezhen put forward the spirit of "seeking truth" and encouraged teachers and students to "save the country and not forget to study." Standing from the perspective of Zhejiang people in the new era, the new compilation fragment of "Yishan Q&A" was brewed.

After the successful premiere, the Yue Opera Society was invited to perform in Shaoxing

"President Zhu is a native of Shaoxing, and we also want to tell the story of Zhejiang University in Shaoxing dialect and Yue opera." This is the original intention of their creation and performance. In 2018, they were also invited to Shaoxing, the birthplace of Yue opera, to the local grassroots to carry out performances, so that their first annual drama "Liang Zhu" went out of the school and into the lives of local people.

In 2021, the Yue Opera Society presented its gift for the centenary of the founding of the Party with the annual drama "Five Girls BaiShou", and they hoped that yue opera in the new era would also be rejuvenated.

"Out of the Loop" on Campus with the Annual Drama

The annual drama of the year, the unique folding drama special... Behind the seeming brilliance, it is inseparable from the hard work of the members of the Yue Opera Society.

April 21, 2018, is a day when all the "old people" of the community can blurt out, that is, the day when the first annual drama of the Yue Opera Society, "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", was performed. This play is of landmark significance for the community.

The Yue Opera Club rehearses in the open space on campus

The first launch of the "Annual Drama" is all about their own exploration and experimentation. In short supply, they borrowed people from other universities in Hangzhou and borrowed people from the "brother" clubs in the school, and cobbled together a drama team of sixty people. Lacking a rehearsal space, they shuttled through the open spaces on campus every night. Without guidance, then the members of the club teach each other a little, follow the video tape to learn a little more, and it looks like it is coherent. Lacking props and stage beauty, they borrowed from the professional troupe, followed the truck from Fuyang on the highway, and carried back boxes of props together.

"There was a play in Liang Zhu that we rehearsed for a whole semester," recalled Hong Wenxiang, the president who was a sophomore at the time, "and the seven-minute excerpt was the most emotional fragment, requiring eight students to move completely uniformly, and it was very troublesome to schedule." "At the time, they were rehearsing every weekend, for hours at a time, repetitive and self-critical, and finally presented the best in the audience.

Whether traditional opera performances can attract students in school is a problem that everyone has been worried about when arranging annual plays. "One is that I am afraid that no one will come, and the other is that I am afraid that the audience will run out of the performance." Che Yuchao, a member of the company who was a freshman at the time, expressed his concerns.

But the enthusiasm of the students surprised them, and no one expected that in the first minute of the release of tickets, 291 tickets were issued. Immediately after that, more and more people received tickets for the show. On the night of the invoice, most of the community was still rehearsing. "As soon as I heard the news, I pounded the ground with excitement," said Sun Qun'an, a junior member at the time, "the publicity that began two months in advance was afraid that no one would come, and everyone was very excited that night." ”

On the stage, more and more people glanced at the audience with their afterglow, and the faces of international students appeared in it. They think, it's worth it! It also strengthens the confidence of doing the "annual drama" in the future.

Hobbies and feelings

They walk into the memories of their childhood

"We just love to listen," Che Yuchao said of his love affair with the Yue Opera Society, "when I was a child, the folk Yue Opera Troupe in Shaoxing was in the boat, parked on the other side of the river at home. After the play, I sometimes went home on my grandmother's back. In the field, Grandma hummed a play in her mouth, like a prose poem from her childhood. ”

Among the new members who joined the Yue Opera Society, there were those who had zero foundation but wanted to explore the charm of traditional Chinese opera culture, and there were also those who had learned to sing opera since childhood and wanted to continue to exercise in the community, but more were like Che Yuchao, who slowly went deeper in their love for Yue opera when they were ignorant.

Dialects are the basis of opera. From an audience to an actor, if you want to sing Yue opera well, you must first learn the Shaoxing dialect in your singing voice. The paper is densely marked with notes, which is a testimony to their efforts to learn Yue opera.

"The master leads into the door, and the practice is in the individual." The improvement of Yue opera skills, in addition to asking teachers of professional theater troupes to guide, still depends more on the inheritance within the community. A group of people gathered around, pondering each other on the videotape, singing, biting words and stature, and everyone seemed to find some shadows of the previous community members.

Members hire professional troupe teachers to teach singing

Although the Yue Opera Club, which maintains about 40 members all year round, changes every year like other societies, the participation of key members is almost unchanged. Hobbies and interests do not fade with age, and students with master's and doctoral degrees, even some faculty members on campus, are still involved in the front line of club activities.

Now that they have entered the graduate school stage, they are still active in the rehearsal of each annual drama and the stage of campus Yue opera. For them, the Yue Opera Society is a group of like-minded people who do one thing they like together.

They hope that more people will fall in love with Yue opera. They also work with traditional opera clubs such as Wanyun Peking Opera Society and Kunqu Study Club to make progress, hoping that more people can fall in love with Chinese opera and traditional culture.
