Art review 丨Liu Jian: Iron Mountain is silent and majestic

Wen 丨 Liu Jian

Chairman Huang Tieshan, people respect and affectionately call him "Iron Chairman".

Chairman Tie is the academic leader of Watercolor in China. Watercolor was introduced to China for about three hundred years, or more than a hundred years after its main development, and in the early days, most of them were painters of other painting disciplines, and few specialized. Since the first half of the 20th century, especially after the founding of New China, it has gradually entered a period of development, and there are more and more painters specializing in watercolor, and their works are mostly seen in comprehensive exhibitions. Since the "Sixth National Art Exhibition" in 1984, the exhibition area has been set up as an independent painting genre, but it still seems that it cannot be compared with other "big painting genres". In order to make watercolor painting more independent and vigorous development, at the Fourth Congress of the China Artists Association in 1985, Huang Tieshan, Together with Mr. Wu Guanzhong, Gu Yuan, Li Jianchen and others, jointly put forward the proposal of "Suggesting that the China Artists Association hold a national watercolor exhibition this year and next year". Subsequently, independent watercolor exhibitions such as the "National Watercolor Pastel Exhibition", "China's First Watercolor Art Exhibition" and "China Centennial Watercolor Painting Exhibition" were held with continuity and successive editions. In 1993, the Watercolor Art Committee of the China Artists Association was established, and Huang Tieshan was recruited as a member, and in 1999, he was appointed as the director of the second art committee. In order to facilitate his work, the directors of the various painting art committees of the China Artists Association were all experts in Beijing, and he was the only "director of Beijing" in the country at that time and for many years afterwards, and he was re-elected, and now serves as an honorary director.

Watercolor is quite special in China. It originated in the West, and the Western gene is innate, because of its water-based pigments and paper media, it is natural to have similar factors to the expression and aesthetic level of Chinese ink painting, or even Some Westerners regard Chinese painting as watercolor. I will not argue here, but I believe that the multi-directional and diversified development of watercolor in China is natural, and the controversy of different concepts and different styles and genres does not need to be denied and exists objectively. As the director, Huang Tieshan, with his inclusive mind, academic equality attitude and integrated way of working, makes The various views and controversies related to Chinese watercolor painting in the Western studies, middle schools, related bodies and uses can be placed in a healthy academic category, and also makes the Chinese watercolor painting community as a whole present a situation of unity and common progress, so that Chinese watercolor painting not only in the form of expression, but also at the aesthetic level, show a diversified development of the weather. At the same time, in the West, when painting as a whole is marginalized, the watercolor style is self-evident. In China, the watercolor team is large, the number of academic activities, and the high artistic standards, in addition to the ancient theory, I think that today's Chinese watercolor painting is in a vibrant era.

In the process of the development of contemporary watercolor painting in China, Huang Tieshan has been appointed as a member of the General Award Committee of the 7th to 11th National Art Exhibition for decades, the director of the jury of the watercolor and pastel exhibition area, and the deputy director and director of the jury of the 2nd to 10th national watercolor and pastel exhibitions. In 2006, he planned and organized the "China Centennial Watercolor Exhibition" at the National Art Museum of China, presided over an academic seminar, and edited the "1905-2006 China Centennial Watercolor Collection". This activity is an epoch-making milestone in the history of the development of Watercolor painting in China. He also participated in the organization, organization and presiding over a series of large-scale and influential academic conferences such as the "Seminar on the Theory of Chinese Art Creation in the 1990s" (1995) and the "Huangshan Chinese Art Forum • Chinese Watercolor Centennial Seminar" (2004), which played an important role and made significant contributions to the academic trend and further development of Chinese watercolor painting before and after the cross-century period, and even to the development of China's art industry.

Chairman Tie is the leading figure of the Xiang Army of Fine Arts. He was elected chairman of the Hunan Provincial Artists Association in 1985, and served three consecutive terms until 2003, when he was also the honorary chairman. For decades, Chairman Iron has extensively united the art community, humbly and respectfully respected his predecessors, and kindly rewarded the future generations. Nowadays, many painters in Hunan Chinese painting, oil painting, watercolor and other disciplines have become influential masters in the country, and the art industry is prosperous. Of course, in addition to Chairman Tie's own comprehensive conditions and diligent efforts, but also coinciding with the prosperous era, reform and opening up, all-round development, emphasis on literature and art and the improvement of economic conditions, so that he has the overall conditions to make greater contributions and promote the greater development of Hunan art.

Huang Tieshan's "Eighteen-Hole Village of Precision Poverty Alleviation" Watercolor Painting 78cm×110cm

Chairman Iron is an accomplished artist. Youdao is a painting like a person, and I think it is the refraction of the artist's internal character, temperament, cultivation, experience and other comprehensive factors in the work. The Iron Chairman is gentle and elegant, introverted in character, delicate in emotion, and rigorous in his studies. Reading his paintings, it feels like this. Instead of showing off the eye, we use plain language and the integrity of the picture to express the meaning of the theme and infect the viewer. The painting style is simple and fresh, the artistic conception is timeless and mellow, and the so-called still water flows deeply, and the words are concise and meaningful. It seems to be a naturalistic depiction, in which ingenuity is unique without showing traces; it seems to be a realistic style, in which lyrical freehand has been integrated into one furnace. He adheres to the spirit of realism, and exudes romantic feelings, full of a lot of nostalgia between understatement, and the water and color blend are not full of poetry. His 9 works, including "Golden with Late Autumn" and "Miaozhai Wedding Diagram", are collected by the National Art Museum of China, which is the largest number of watercolor painters in the world; his "Miscellaneous Thoughts on Chinese Watercolor Painting" won the second prize of the Third China Federation of Literary and Art Criticism Awards. He has had a broad and far-reaching influence on contemporary Chinese watercolor not only in terms of organization and leadership work, but also in the field of artistic creation and theoretical research. He pays attention to society, life, and the times, and his newly created "Eighteen-Hole Village of Precision Poverty Alleviation" has been permanently collected by the History Exhibition Hall of the Communist Party of China. It reflects the sense of mission and historical responsibility of this old artist in the new era, and also reflects his exuberant artistic creativity. The cultivation of comprehensive art, the edification of Chinese culture and the conscious aesthetic pursuit have created his distinct artistic personality and created a contemporary Chinese watercolor painting circle. More of his works have been exhibited in national art exhibitions and at home and abroad, and his comprehensive achievements such as awards, collections, and monographs have long been recorded in the annals of contemporary Chinese art history, far from being exhaustive in this short article.

Huang Tieshan "Golden with Late Autumn" Watercolor, 32cm×86cm, 1984

At this time, I once again read "Golden with Late Autumn", one of Chairman Tie's early masterpieces, which has a profound meaning and is thought-provoking. Looking at the golden harvest and the elders who worked hard, I can't help but think of the fruitful scenes of today's Chinese watercolor painting world, the Hunan Art Garden, and the predecessors who have worked hard for decades.
