IDC: After two years of strong growth, PC market shipments tend to slow

IDC: After two years of strong growth, PC market shipments tend to slow

IDC said the PC market ended two years of double-digit growth, and while the first-quarter decline was a change in that momentum, it doesn't mean the industry is in a downward spiral. Supply chains and logistics remain challenging, but suppliers still shipped 80.5 million PCs during the quarter. In the first quarter of 2022, global shipments exceeded 80 million for the seventh consecutive quarter, a phenomenon not seen since 2012.

Ryan Reith, vice president of IDC's global mobile device tracking team, said: "We shouldn't focus on the year-over-year decline in PC sales, because that's to be expected. We should focus on the ENTIRE PC industry, where logistics and supply chains remain a hindrance, accompanied by geopolitical and COVID-19 challenges, where shipments still reach more than 80 million units. We're seeing a slowdown in both the education and consumer markets, but all the data shows that demand for business PCs is still very strong. We remain confident that the consumer market will recover again in the near future. And, data for the first quarter of 2022 shows that PC shipments are close to record levels in the first quarter of the same period. ”

IT House understands that the ranking of the top five vendors in the market remained unchanged in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. Lenovo still topped the list with 22.7 percent market share, followed by HP, Dell and Apple, with Asus and Acer tied for fifth place in the first quarter of 2022. Dell, Apple and Asus are the only Top Tier suppliers with year-over-year shipments. Due to continued supply chain shortages and challenges compared to a strong first quarter, laptops declined year-over-year, while desktop computers grew slightly.

Jay Chou, Research Manager, Global PC Monitor Tracking Systems, IDC, said: "Although some markets are slowing due to saturation of demand and rising costs, we still see a glimmer of hope in a market that has reached an inflection point of slowing growth. In addition to commercial spending in the personal computer market, in the early days of the epidemic, there were still some emerging markets that did not receive attention, and the demand from high-end consumers also maintained growth. ”
