I urge you to give up your fantasies about the "small screen flagship": the Samsung Galaxy S22 review

From Xiaomi 11 Pro, Xiaomi 12 to Google Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 5 to iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, Redmi K50, the past quarter of the replacement experience, did not let me find the answer to the question of "which phone can replace pixel", but let me become more and more picky in the choice of the main machine.

It wasn't until the last time I went out and hesitated to finally take out the two SIM cards that had just been put into the iPhone 13 Pro, that I realized that I still liked the Galaxy S22 and The One UI a bit.

But in the end I sold it. This article is a summary of the half a month spent with it.

▍ It is a "medium cup" but not a small screen flagship

The Galaxy S22 was still seen by many as a runner on the "small screen flagship" track in early reviews, but when put together with the heavier iPhone 13 Pro, they are so close in size. In other words, even if it is indeed the smallest in the entire Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy S22 in the "middle cup" position, the actual size of the target should be the next door iPhone 13/13 Pro.

I urge you to give up your fantasies about the "small screen flagship": the Samsung Galaxy S22 review

After the shell, the Galaxy S22 and iPhone 13 Pro are comparable in size and have a large difference in weight

Friends who still have illusions about galaxy S22, please give up the unrealistic idea of "small screen flagship". Galaxy S22 can only be said to be not a large-screen Samsung Galaxy, I can barely operate it with one hand when holding it in my hand, and my little fingers will not feel uncomfortable because of the weight of 176g. When you light up your phone, the Galaxy S22 will be in your hand 70.6×146mm, a "palm-sized" space, presenting you with as much as possible a screen with a display area that is almost pushed to the front boundary.

Such a positive perception is easy to capture the hearts of the "Yan Value Party" at the first time: straight screen, small and medium-sized front camera, and front four borders are almost equal width. Coupled with the "violent" Vision Booster technology, even if the screen is lit under the 30-degree clear sky in Chongqing, I don't have to expect to be able to "see the notification" as normally - I want to appreciate the wallpaper that is very suitable for the "full screen" selected today, and I can never tire of the symmetry, order, immersion and satisfaction that come from the four sides of the front border.

Screen shots when the sun is shining 30 degrees outdoors is not the highest brightness

The Android camp is fighting on the "200 million pixels" track, why can't we spend a little money on the "front border four-sided equal width" like the iPhone?

Galaxy S22 is still equipped with an excellent "Samsung screen", even if I was a Pixel user for many years, before becoming a Samsung mobile phone user, I also knew that "you can always trust the Galaxy S series of screens" This truth. Although Samsung unsurprisingly retained the 2K+ resolution to its own "super cup" model, the Galaxy S22 FHD+ resolution screen is enough to cope with most mobile video and game content consumption in terms of color and viewing sensation.

Welcome to the quadrilateral equal-width (almost) family

Speaking of refresh rate, many people should have heard of it, galaxy S22 when the original release of Samsung officially declared the screen parameter is actually to support 10Hz ~ 120Hz multi-file refresh rate, but later changed to 24Hz ~ 120Hz. Samsung's explanation is that the screen pipeline supports 10Hz output, but in any case, the reason why we care about this matter is that we still want to save power, after all, the Galaxy S22 is smaller than the previous generation of Galaxy S21 battery capacity.

The same video, the screen refresh rate status when 1080P60fps (top) and not turned on (bottom).

The change in the frame rate of the input text and when stationary

But the concept of "mobile phone" has long since changed, and many people's demand for mobile devices may not be just watching videos and reading novels on the way to work. In the more common usage scenarios for me, brushing the time flow of social platforms such as Weibo, paddling in chat apps, fighting pictures and even opening a "League of Legends" mobile game in my spare time... The habit of use is slightly tilted to the word "heavy", and the battery life of the Galaxy S22 will come to the point of "almost unable to see".

In fact, the Galaxy S22 is a phone with a bad battery life. I am even willing to call it the life of no small screen flagship, but there is a disease of small screen flagship.

Use the next 4 hours or so of the light screen time heavily

At best, if your demand for mobile phone use is to commute to work in various ways to pass the time, and the desk has a wired or wireless power supply available at any time, then choosing the Galaxy S22 will bring a little power anxiety is actually not much of a problem; but if you occasionally need to go out for a day or even several days, and need to complete a variety of serious and improper tasks on the phone, then charging is a problem that cannot be avoided.

What's more, it also only supports 25W "ultra-fast charging".

The Galaxy S22 is like a 200-kilometer tram that's mainly used for urban commuting, and all you can expect is to commute to the city. If you want to drive a long distance, you have to think about it.

On the issue of battery life, I consulted the staff of Samsung's offline stores, and their advice was to turn off the 120Hz adaptive refresh rate to choose the standard 60Hz refresh rate - but any Google Pixel that has used a 90Hz refresh rate or apple devices with ProMotion will not say such a thing; go to the Samsung Galaxy Community and turn around, and find that the Galaxy S22+ has a slightly better battery life but not much better.

To sum up, if it is not used as a backup machine, the Galaxy S22 is simply a ticket to galaxy S22+ or even galaxy S22 Ultra: it is neither the fully balanced "Little King Kong" that small-screen mobile phone enthusiasts want, nor the Galaxy flagship whose battery life, camera and screen can represent the peak level of this generation of Samsung.

If you're more or less interested in the Galaxy S22 series because of the camera and One UI mentioned below, it should be sooner or later.

Barely passed the size in the "Small Screen Flagship" camp

I just don't know if the external amplifier and vibration motor tuning of Galay S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra will be better - Galaxy S22 is difficult to use the X-axis linear motor, and the actual feedback effect in most operations is too cheap to be good, or even not as crisp and powerful as the Pixel 5 that relies on post-tuning.

▍Take pictures: full hardware score, algorithm extra points

At this point, we assume that we have overcome mobile phone dependence, and we have reached a reconciliation with the trivial but annoying fact that Samsung has not done vibration motor tuning at all and has not yet obtained Netflix HDR certification. What's next for the experience of embracing you?

Most manufacturers in the "middle cup" this file will not give the full focus segment rear camera module, including a personal favorite, the effect is also very satisfactory telephoto lens.

If the Samsung Galaxy S22 is benchmarked in the actual size of the iPhone 13/13 Pro next door, then its post-camera domestic manufacturers can be said to be "leapfrog".

I'm not professional, so I can't figure out why all the major mobile phone manufacturers are obsessed with ultra-wide angles rather than telephoto. It should be known that Google has introduced a panoramic photo stitching function for its own camera since the Nexus era, and even the function of automatically generating panoramic photos based on multiple photos in the same place and different orientations. And since the solutions and practical effects of software and algorithms are not bad in the matter of "shooting widely", I personally prefer to give priority to the problem of "shooting far".

I can actually accept it for shooting ultra-wide angles

You don't even need to exaggerate to 50 times or 100 times that you can see it, you can take two steps less, and you can reduce the post-crop composition by 3 times or 5 times.

Galaxy S22 (3x)

The Galaxy S22's telephoto lens gets stuck in what is a "dessert" for me. Previously, the iPhone 13 mini was upgraded to the iPhone 13 Pro, both of which are models with 3x optical zoom, and this time also made a lot of comparisons with them.

iPhone 13 Pro vs. Galaxy S22 (3x)

In actual experience, in addition to the occasional situation where the white balance is not accurate, the Samsung Galaxy S22 can most of the time with the telephoto of the iPhone 13 Pro under the standard focal length of 3 times. In the use of telephoto to shoot long-range scenes, such as buildings and buildings with more geometric lines, the 3x telephoto of the iPhone 13 Pro can often provide a clearer, more natural texture effect with the help of the Deep Fusion algorithm, and the picture is also visible to the naked eye; but in the process of using telephoto to shoot close-ups, the same algorithm will make the iPhone 13 Pro smear in pieces, and the Galaxy S22 can accurately restore the purity that 3x optical zoom should be. Natural look and feel.

iPhone 13 Pro (3x), the main screen icon is about to be smeared by the algorithm to the paste

The Galaxy S22 (3x) shoots close-ups, and I personally prefer this natural and transparent look

The reason why I personally prefer the Galaxy S22 is that Samsung's style on the camera ring is really getting closer and closer to the Google Pixel - on the basis of having a more "modern" hardware configuration than the Google Pixel, the software algorithm plays an increasingly important role in the shooting experience of the Galaxy S22, and in the comparison with the iPhone 13 Pro, the Galaxy S22 is almost a complete victory in the shooting scene with 3x zoom up.

Galaxy S22 (10x)

In the case of 3x zoom, if you feel that the texture resolution of the Galaxy S22 is really not as good as that of the iPhone 13 Pro, you can also open the preview and select "Photo Re-record" in the album menu to try. This feature is a bit like the "beautify" function in Google's Album Editor, but the effect is more stable and the function is more: the colors are sharper, the picture is brighter, the text texture is sharper, and even the resolution of the super-resolution algorithm is improved...

Photo re-recording with rich eraser features, usability is very high

In short, it is how to look good, how to come, how to be practical and how to come.

The post-editing function of Samsung Album also makes me extremely convinced that not buying Google Pixel 6 this year is the right decision, Samsung Album in addition to the effect does not lose Google's "Object Eraser" function, but also provides glass reflection clearing, screen shadow removal and other features. So really to take the image retouching and photo algorithm as the selling point, Google Pixel this year in my opinion is inferior to Samsung Galaxy S22 series.

Of course, if you are more professional, you can also get a more free and broad space for post-image retouching through the ExpertRAW app provided by Samsung. ExpertRAW can be installed through the Samsung software store, and it takes a while to get a preview effect after the shooting is completed, but the experience should be similar to Apple's ProRAW.

▍One UI is a restrained "fat man"

In fact, before starting the Galaxy S22, the One UI has accumulated a lot of good feelings in my heart.

On the one hand, the transformation of One UI in recent years is substantially more than the domestic custom system in my opinion (although the latter has been more successful in marketing and marketing), on the other hand, Samsung's 4-year Android version update commitment announced with galaxy S22 is really shocking, especially for Pixel users who can only get a 3-year guarantee from Google.

What about the actual experience? Samsung One UI 4.1 feels more like a restrained "fat man", it has extremely bloated system features, but in the implementation of these features, it has chosen a more restrained and relatively more respectful android native standard implementation path.

One more thing to say before expanding: Because the tome of the One UI User Manual has not yet been completed, it is obviously impossible to clarify the system in a section of an article. Let's just talk about some key experiences from my personal perspective.

Let's start by talking about what makes me feel bad about the One UI.

To get started, you have to rely on the instruction manual

The "cheap feeling" of the store prototype mentioned at the beginning of the article is largely due to the fact that the display size given by one UI to the Galaxy S22 by default is too large. To know that the Galaxy S22 is equipped with a 6.1-inch screen that is not a "small screen", using the official Weibo client on this screen, the number of microblogs you can see without sliding is not more than two - encountering graphics or long microblogs or even barely only one.

The default display shows the weibo experience under Zoom

So when the Galaxy S22 arrived, display scaling was one of the first system settings I moved. Similar settings include the home screen app drawer layout, a 5×6 grid, and more. In addition, as of press time, One UI 4.1 still has the animation stuttering problem when returning to the home screen from the app in Galaxy S22, and if you want to completely solve most of the above problems, directly replacing the default launcher as Niagara Launcher may be a more considerable option.

Of course, in the few days of getting started with One UI, what surprised me the most was the series of official and unofficial "installation essentials" tools that "star fans" should be familiar with: Good Lock, Good Guardians, Sam Helper... Except Sam Helper can be downloaded directly in the Samsung App Store.

Now that I've put them on the second screen of the desktop, it's more like they're telling these users by name to people who are new to Samsung phones:

One UI? Not so good without us.

(One UI without these tools may not be "good")

For example, I hate a detail - after setting the desktop and application drawer grid to 5 columns, the number of application suggestions under the multitasking interface of the system can still only be 4, which gives people a sense of separation, and in the Good Lock > Home Up > Task Changer, you can directly turn off this annoying application suggestion; for example, because Samsung uses advance compilation, the first few days of getting started always feel that the phone is hot, stuttering, and the installation of applications is very slow. If you don't want to wait for this "blind box experience" to end, you can manually optimize your app with Good Guardians' Galaxy App Booster app.

Improve "kill background" with Good Guardians (left) and modify the multitasking interface with Good Lock (right)

There are still many places like this that need to be manually tossed around to achieve "normal", so the One UI is really like the joke from the perspective of new users, and the introduction also has to look at the manual - and this manual tome has not yet been completed.

▍ Performance dragged down by the app store

Compared to the small troubles of "looking", the most affecting "use up" experience I encountered in this process came from Samsung's default app store.

After using the default Store configuration, you have a 32-bit happy machine

I went to check it out, the Samsung app store has supported the upload of 64-bit applications since 2020, and it can be seen from the previous 32-bit WeChat flashback reports on Samsung devices that the Samsung app store previously supported the automatic distribution of 64-bit apps according to the phone model and version.

However, because of the bug that has not been solved so far, the Galaxy S22 can only get the 32-bit version of the app from the Samsung App Store as of press time.

What is this concept? The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1 powered by galaxy S22 is a 64-bit architecture, of which 3 CPU cores do not support 32-bit applications, so the whole runtime is in a state of "cheering and cheering and watching". The above-mentioned problems of various stuttering fever and even poor battery life after the machine arrives, there is a high probability that there is also a copy of the app store.

Before the official fix of this problem, the recommended solution for individuals is to install the OPPO software store - the domestic application store has long supported 64-bit application distribution, and there will be no problems on non-own models.

Bloated where it shouldn't be

In the process of experiencing the One UI, the gap between Samsung's localization experience and the high-end positioning of the phone itself also surprised me slightly.

In addition to the 64-bit app distribution problem in the app store, after installing the app, it will also pop up a very "understand Chinese users" "Everyone also downloaded" half-screen app promotion; when searching for an app, the search results are also more than half a screen ads.

There is no difference between the app store experience and the domestic machine

The weather app surprisingly has two. If you click from the weather card of the negative Bixby home screen, the weather app will insert an advertisement close to half the screen in the weather information; experience a pure positive weather app, but the default does not provide an app icon, which requires you to add the correct weather widget and enter through the desktop widget before you can add the main screen entrance in the app settings.

You can see both weather interfaces

What annoys me the most is to ensure that an application is not "killed in the background" on the One UI, and the degree of operation is not lost to any domestic custom system.

One UI deserves Don't kill my app! The top custom system will change Android to no "modern operating system" flavor in the background management matter: One UI will open an "unrestricted" battery use policy for WeChat, which ranks first in power consumption for many years, but all the applications installed by users themselves will be put into the "restricted" file by default; even if I manually open the "optimized" file battery use strategy for my own commonly used applications, These applications are also very easy to kill in the slightly heavier multitasking process, and in order to completely achieve background retention, you must manually lock in the multitasking interface...

Of course, the model of One UI in the background management and power saving mechanism is also related to its almost non-existent push system to a certain extent. In my use of the process, the most obvious feeling is Feishu - I can not use Feishu on the One UI at all, when I went to work, the same message rang a notification on Windows, a notification on iPhone, and even a notification on the Google Pixel 5 pushed by FCM, but the Galaxy S22 still lay quietly there...

Respect native standardization implementations

Talk a lot of bad, what about the good place?

One UI can be said to be the closest to google pixel, the closest to the latest native Android experience of the custom system.

In addition to the new Android 12 features that have been introduced by Material You that have been introduced in the details, such as Material You wallpaper color ingestion, new widgets, privacy permission panels, etc., I also noticed in the process of using Galaxy S22 this time that the Samsung keyboard (not "Sogou Input Method Samsung Edition") is also one of the few custom system built-in input methods on the market that support IME input suggestions.

In other words, in addition to the full double-spelling, localized thesaurus support, the Samsung keyboard that comes with one UI can also integrate the autofill function with the input method with the support for native features, and the experience when using the password management service will be taken to a higher level.

The Samsung keyboard is also quite easy to use

In addition, Samsung Keyboard already supports Material You dynamic colors under the light theme.

Samsung Life Assistant is unexpectedly easy to use

For a user who has been using Google Pixel for many years and has little expectation for localization features, the satisfaction brought by One UI's Samsung Life Assistant in terms of localization features is huge, and it can even be said that it is my ideal "Chinese version of Google Now" to look like.

Schedule reminders, courier assistants, weather updates, travel assistants... In terms of basic life convenience functions, Samsung Life Assistant is almost missing, and among the many functions, I am mainly impressed by travel assistants and application switching.

Railway 12306 After no longer sending sms to the booking mobile phone number, the way to view the information related to the train and high-speed rail on the Android platform is only the official client in addition to the WeChat public account, every trip makes me feel quite troublesome, and I have always had a big dream like iOS handheld high-speed rail directly adding ticket checks and seat information cards.

Samsung Life Assistant uses simple and rude means to realize the booking information recognition of application clients such as Railway 12306, Ctrip, Qunar, etc., as long as the accessibility function is turned on for life assistant, it can be smoothly enabled, and receive timely reminders in relevant time and scenes.

Trip information extraction is achieved with accessibility features, and it can be extracted repeatedly

Similarly, app switching also directly utilizes the most common floating window implementation in the Android system. After switching other applications in the process of AutoNavi map navigation, Meituan takeaway and other meals, One UI will provide a shortcut to information viewing and application jumping through the way of label floating windows, although whether it is navigation or takeaway At this stage, the preview information that can be provided is limited, considering that this function is based on barrier-free screen recognition, it should not be difficult to add more detailed status reminders in the future;

Various information previews and jumps to the floating window

This is aimed at the needs of the Chinese people

The function of application switching actually made me think of the "flashback key" of ColorOS for the first time - it is also in the background to provide information preview and quick jump, ColorOS was precisely because of the choice to re-"build the wheel", resulting in the "flashback key" function for a long time without more third-party application adaptation and access. The One UI is much smarter and more efficient.

Similar to the trip assistant and the store assistant, many functions in Samsung Life Assistant are based on the most common floating windows of the Android system, with the help of accessibility functions and positioning information, Samsung Life Assistant will automatically pop up nearby food play location recommendations when I enter the business district, give membership information and order cards when I come to KFC, and remind me not to stay up late when playing mobile phone late at night...

Shop card, a must on Thursday

"Spot charged" people will love Samsung

This part is really more and more like some of the assistant business content I took over before, but Samsung Life Assistant is really so simple and easy to use. It uses the purest means of realization and the most grounded realization effect to tell me that the intelligent and scenario-based intelligent experiences that domestic manufacturers have spent a lot of effort to do in the past are actually not so complicated.

More importantly, because the implementation is also as easy as possible to use standardized interfaces or native Android's existing features, Samsung Life Assistant seems to be more reliable in terms of long-term usability than any smart assistant I have used before.

▍ Summary

Back to the two SIM cards mentioned at the beginning.

Writing this article is actually a process of reflection on choices for me. In how to arrange these two SIM cards, there are many more trustworthy options than galaxy S22, such as the feel pixel 5 is the real "small phone", on the battery life just released Redmi K50 can be far away from it, on the system experience iOS push system is obviously more suitable for work.

And even in other models of Samsung's generation of product lines, I can't see the right choice for myself: Galaxy S22+ brings only a little endurance benefit, so it seems unnecessary to choose a phone with a larger size than the iPhone 13 Pro; one step in the "liter cup" Galaxy S22 Ultra, and have to accept a completely different design from the front four bezels - Galaxy S22 Ultra looks more like note22 than S22, And I'm not the kind of creative and productivity person who needs to write and draw on phablet all day with a stylus.

Although I initially hoped that the advent of the Galaxy S22 would change something, I was disappointed to find that nothing had changed.

As a user, I can naturally fantasize that Samsung can make a real iPhone of Android, but as a manufacturer, especially a manufacturer like Samsung, which has a painful history in battery safety, it has come up with such a high-quality telephoto Galaxy S22 with excellent screen, poor battery life, and a rare "mid-cup" model.

In front of the Galaxy S22, you either have to make a choice, or add money, or simply reject this "middle cup" like me - to be honest, the performance of the One UI makes me look forward to the day when the Galaxy S series surpasses the Google Pixel and even becomes the benchmark of the Android camp, but now is not the time.
