Condolences

Shocked to learn of the unfortunate death of Mr. Feng Shanyun, I would like to express my deep condolences!

Mr. Feng Shanyun is a folk art researcher and artist who grew up in northern Shaanxi and is rooted in northern Shaanxi. He loves his hometown, loves the Yellow River culture, has been seriously engaged in grass-roots mass cultural work all his life, has made a lot of efforts for the investigation and inheritance and protection of intangible cultural heritage, and spared no effort to promote and disseminate the Yellow River culture. He went deep into life, extensively contacted the masses, helped others for fun, conveyed lofty cultural ideals in simple local feelings, and showed a spirit of dedication in ordinary jobs. He loves oil painting and insists on creating statues for his fathers and fellow countrymen in northern Shaanxi, and his works are full of life.

During my many visits to Yanchuan in northern Shaanxi, Mr. Shanyun would go to the scene of my sketching and introduce to me the history and culture of the Yellow River and the folk customs of the countryside, especially the intangible cultural heritage. While telling many vivid stories, he is full of cultural pride, sincerely admiring the historical changes that have taken place along the Yellow River and the Loess Plateau today, and looking forward to more artists going to the Yellow River and expressing the Yellow River. I once inscribed "Dreaming of the Yellow River" for his paintings, and in him, I saw a pure heart nourished by the Yellow River culture and dedicated to the Yellow River culture.

Dream of the Yellow River, the soul returns to the Yellow River. Mr. Feng Shanyun has been ancient!

【Comment】Son of the Yellow River

· Jin Zhilin ·

Feng Shanyun's oil painting is an earthen oil painting on the Loess Plateau. Soil oil painting is Yan'an Lu Yi Luo Gong Liu painted, in Yan'an rectification he did not specifically learn oil painting, he painted the authentic battle is soil oil painting. There is also a second named Gao Hong, who is a military painter, and the painting of northern Shaanxi is also a soil oil painting. Today, looking at these paintings of Feng Shanyun are also soil oil paintings.

When the paper cut of Yanchuan Tall Lady was exhibited at the National Art Museum of China, it was named the Yellow River Soul. Then Feng Shanyun's portraits of peasants are naturally the sons of the Yellow River. At first glance, his portraits have not studied oil painting, but his images, colors, and pens sincerely express his feelings for the peasants. There is no life where he grew up, and he cannot draw without affection for the peasants. No one can do such a painting, I can't do it anyway, it is not by the color of the ocean but by the color of the earth. And like The French Miro, there is also the Mainland Mop Dou landlord, the Dou landlord in the French Imperial Palace exhibition, the first Wu Zuoren, Yufeng led the Chinese art exhibition, at that time I happened to take the northern Shaanxi paper cut also in France. There I met with Mr. Wu, he said you hurry over, take this tie, I accompanied the French painter to see, saw Mopp's landlord, I said this is Chinese soil oil painting, they were suddenly stunned, how is it called soil oil painting? I say the color is not good, they say why not? The content and theme color he wants to express are expressed, how can this not be said, what color are you talking about? This sentence has had a great influence on me, from 1986 to the present, this color is the theme you want to express is your color. The most convincing of this is the head of Feng Shanyun, the son of the Yellow River. Some of the faces are yellow and some are red, but most of them are OK, not to show you any color but the image. I hope that these avatars will improve the localization of Chinese oil paintings, not the French Impressionists introduced by Xu Beihong, nor the Soviet faction introduced by Maximov, but the natives of China itself, which has such deep feelings for everyone. I saw this twice, and this time after I went to the tall lady's house to see it, he brought the painting here, and we all looked at it together.

——The 50th anniversary of Feng Shanyun's career in art

· Liu Hongxiang

Teacher Feng Shanyun and the Republic of China are the same age, is the representative inheritor of the fourth batch of intangible cultural heritage protection projects in Shaanxi Province, Yanchuan County Cloth Pile Painting, he is the excavator and finisher of Yanchuan paper-cutting and cloth pile paintings, and is also a famous printmaker and oil painter.

During his work at the Yongping Town Cultural Center, Mr. Feng held many training classes on folk paper-cutting and cloth stacking. He teaches according to his aptitude, gradually inspiring the imagination and creativity of each student according to their actual situation. He often uses the phrase of Mr. Qi Baishi, "Those who learn from me are born, and those who resemble me die", and the beauty of works of art is "between similarity and dissimilarity" to guide students. Educate students to learn to be human first, and then learn the principle of art.

Teacher Feng Shanyun is a ladder, long-term selfless dedication to The folk art cause of Yanchuan, he does not hesitate to sacrifice his personal rest time and creation time, for many years to hold cloth painting, paper-cutting art training classes, cultivate a batch of folk art lovers, the formation of the old, middle and young creative echelon, so that Yanchuan folk art creation team continues to grow. The brilliance of Yanchuan folk cloth paintings and paper-cutting can have today, and Teacher Feng Shanyun is indispensable.

Yanchuan Cloth Painting Artwork has drifted across the ocean under the hard work of teacher Feng Shanyun. Its shape is concise and generalized, rough and simple, the color contrast is strong, it has a high art collection value, and it has a deep sense of life and reproduction, and the Yanchuan cloth pile painting is mainly represented by Feng Shanyun. In the 1980s and 1990s, in addition to being continuously exhibited throughout the country, Yanchuan's cloth paintings were successively exhibited in France, Japan, Denmark, the United States, Germany and other countries, so that Yanchuan folk art went out of the yellow land, went abroad and went to the world. During the 1990 Asian Games, Yanchuan cloth paintings were exhibited in Beijing. On October 1 of the same year, CCTV Oriental Time and Space "Telling the Story of the People Themselves" introduced "Feng Shanyun and Cloth Pile Painting". Mr. Feng's cloth paintings have a strong regional cultural imprint, and each work contains simple philosophy and has a strong visual impact, becoming the "Picasso of China" in the eyes of foreign artists. Yanchuan cloth painting art is known as "the wonder of the Loess Plateau", "the song of the soul" and "a folk must", which was famous in China and the world.

Yanchuan paper-cutting art is unique, with a unique Yellow River cultural heritage, and is called a living fossil of human history by experts and scholars. The themes are mostly related to folk totems, reproduction and stories and legends, and the style is thick and vigorous, simple and concise. Since the 1980s, under the hard cultivation of Feng Shanyun, many amateur authors have pursued it as an art. Yanchuan paper-cutting is mainly represented by Gao Fenglian, and a large number of outstanding paper-cutting artists with exquisite cutting skills and strong creativity have emerged, such as Liu Jieqiong, Fan Rongrong, Liu Xiaojuan, Liu Yanqin. Folk artists such as Gao Fenglian, Liu Jieqiong, and Liu Xiaojuan have repeatedly walked into the central and provincial and municipal television stations to perform live paper-cutting performances. In 2004, Yanchuan 10,000 people cut paper to participate in the "Shanghai International Art Biennale", which caused a great sensation in the art world. On May 8, 2014, the "Soul of the Yellow River" - Gao Fenglian's Three Generations of Paper-cutting Art Invitation Exhibition was grandly opened at the National Art Museum of China, focusing on more than 100 paper-cutting masterpieces of Gao Fenglian's three generations of grandchildren, attracting countless Chinese and foreign folk artists, art circles and paper-cutting enthusiasts to visit. If teacher Feng Shanyun had not discovered and cultivated Gao Fenglian in those years, it would have been impossible for Master Gao Fenglian to appear. As the saying goes: Maxima is often there and Bole is not often there.

I am an amateur woodcut enthusiast, in the black and white woodcut creation for more than 30 years, every time the creation encounters difficulties, I will take the sketch to Teacher Feng's home or he personally came to my office to discuss the problems in the creation. In June 2019, when I was unable to continue creating the woodcut work "The New Year comes in the first month", Teacher Feng Shanyun learned of the situation and called me to take the draft to his studio. At this time, he was working intensively to create a large-scale oil painting, and in that hot summer, Teacher Feng disregarded his personal fatigue and laid the draft on the ground, and we sat on the floor, carefully analyzing the problems of the picture, and putting forward opinions and suggestions for my reference. He repeatedly encouraged me to read more literary works and write more things, especially emphasizing that an artist's creation must be supported by literary heritage, otherwise the works created are pale and powerless, and I can only become a painter, not a real artist. Under the guidance and encouragement of Mr. Feng, my woodcut works have been selected for provincial, municipal and national art exhibitions and won awards. His prose works have been published many times in newspapers and magazines such as "Culture and Art Newspaper", "China Art News", "Fine Arts Newspaper", "Shaanxi Daily" and other newspapers and magazines, and when he saw my achievements, he praised everyone and felt that his joyful mood was happier than mine. In our many years of interaction, he often taught me how to be a person and how to practice art. I learned a lot from him that I couldn't learn from books, which benefited me a lot for the rest of my life.

While engaging in mass cultural counseling, Teacher Feng Shanyun never forgets his beloved artistic creation, he does a line, loves a line; what he does, what he becomes, and his artistic creation is fruitful.

In 1995, his cloth painting "Yellow River" won the first prize in the Shaanxi Provincial Art Exhibition. In September 1995, Feng Shan Yun Budui's painting exhibition was exhibited in the gallery of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, of which "Dashan" and "Aunt Po" were collected by the Ministry of Culture's Foreign Art Exhibition Company. In July 2001, "Feng Shan Yunbudui Painting Collection" was published by Tianjin People's Fine Arts Publishing House. His prints and cloth paintings have been selected for many domestic and foreign exhibitions.

Mr. Feng Shanyun had many disasters in his life, and had heart repair surgery in 2002, gastric cancer resection surgery in 2012, and recently surgery due to intestinal obstruction. These diseases did not crush Teacher Feng, and he was optimistic about facing one illness after another all the way to today. During this time, he took art for life and raced against time. Every time I went to his house, I always saw him using the carving knife, scissors, and paintbrush in his hand to create constantly on the wooden board, the cloth head, and the canvas, and there was a miracle in life, the body recovered very quickly after the operation, and all the indicators of the annual physical examination were normal, and even the old doctor who had been practicing medicine for many years felt that it was a miracle. In 2012, shortly after being discharged from the hospital after gastric resection, Teacher Feng Shanyun picked up an oil paint pen that he had never taken before and began to create. At that time, I also pinched sweat for him, thinking: oil painting art is a foreign art, the artistic content is relatively high, how to express his beloved Yellow River, yellow land and the amiable and respectable fathers and villagers in this land through Western oil paints, for an outsider who has not undergone scientific training, the difficulty of creating oil painting can be imagined. Teacher Feng Shanyun knew that there were tigers in the mountains, and he was partial to such a personality as the tiger mountain line, and he always had a spirit of not accepting defeat in his bones.

In May 2016, the "Feng Shanyun Family Culture and Art Exhibition" was successfully held in Yan'an Culture and Arts Center, and the special report "Son of the Yellow River - Feng Shanyun" in the "Famous Artists Interview" column of Yan'an Tv Station produced a strong response in all walks of life.

In September 2017, "Dreaming of the Yellow River" - Feng Shanyun Oil Painting Exhibition was successfully held at the China Millennium Monument Art Museum in Beijing, and Mr. Fan Di'an, Chairman of the China Artists Association and President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, mr. Jin Zhilin, professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, famous oil painter and educator, attended the opening ceremony and gave high praise to Mr. Feng's oil paintings.

In 2013, Mr. Feng Shanyun used his two-story building to prepare for the construction of the "Feng Shanyun Family Museum" in Yanchuan County and opened it to the public free of charge. The museum exhibits Mr. Feng's cloth pile paintings, prints and oil paintings, paper-cut works of his wife, daughters and daughters-in-law, photographic works of his three sons and grandchildren, and children's paintings. Each work is original, the content is mostly the daily life of farmers and their thinking on life, the work is natural and vivid, exudes a strong atmosphere of life, attracting the surrounding villagers and experts and scholars from inside and outside the province to visit, becoming a beautiful cultural business card of Yanchuan County. In March 2018, the CPC Yan'an Municipal Party Committee and the Yan'an Municipal People's Government awarded the Feng Shanyun family a "civilized family". In 2018, it was rated as "the most beautiful family in the holy land" and "the most beautiful family in Sanqin", and in December 2020, it was rated as "national five good families" by the China Women's Federation.

This is our old artist of virtue and art, Teacher Feng Shanyun. An old artist who has silently dedicated fifty years to the cause of folk art in Yan'an; an old artist who dares to fight against fate and regards artistic creation as life; an old predecessor who is amiable and respectable and willing to be a ladder. He is a banner on the cultural front of Yan'an and is our eternal model for learning.
