The Shuowen Jiezi explains: "Ancestor, initial; ancestral temple. (Ancestral Temple) The oracle bone "ancestor" is the upper part of the roof, the "lI" is the wall, and the "one" below indicates the foundation of the house, which is the pictogram of the "ancestral temple".
The "Zu" character of the Yin Shang Period and the early and middle Zhou Dynasty continued the oracle bone glyph, and the "Zu" character in the Spring and Autumn Period added a "Show" character to the left of the oracle bone "Zu" character, and the "Show" in the oracle bone represented the offering table at the time of sacrifice or the stone pillar or the tablet of the ancestor when sacrificing the gods.
The character "Zu" of Xiaozhuan inherits the glyph of the Spring and Autumn Period, and is written as "Zu" after the change.
The original meaning of "ancestor" is ancestral temple. Shang Shu. Shundian (舜典): "On the first day of the first month, wenzu was finally received." (On an auspicious day on the first lunar month, Shun inherited Yao's throne at Yao's ancestral temple.) The "Wenzu" here refers to the temple of Yao's ancestors.
