"Poetic" Academician Wu Shuoxian: Seeking Scientific Inspiration in Poetry, and Becoming "Everyone"

Flower City in March, the leaves fall in spring. Facing the yellow leaves falling on the campus of South China University of Technology, the 75-year-old Wu Shuoxian updated his original poems in the "circle of friends", this time "Yellow Leaves": "The yellow leaves are half dry, clinging to other plants." Although it violates the show on the branches, it lays the brocade road. Since opening WeChat, he has adhered to this habit for six years, with an average of "one change per day" and more than 2,000 works.

It is not surprising that he is good at composing poetry, but in Wu Shuoxian, who is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a professor of the School of Architecture of South China University of Technology, the director of the Institute of Building Technology Science, and a doctoral supervisor, the "everyone" style of integrating arts and sciences and connecting talents and learning is vividly displayed. From the Book Xiang Mendi, since childhood with poetry, song, calligraphy, the essence of literature has inspired Wu Shuoxian's countless scientific inspirations... Recently, the Information Office of the Guangzhou Municipal Government held a series of activities "Poetic Flower City, Hearing flowers bloom", and Wu Shuoxian was invited to share his "way of getting along" with poetry for a lifetime.

Devote himself to learning the sea to find pearls and jade, and open up the path to the book mountain to collect Guizhi

Wu Shuoxian was born in Zhao'an, Fujian Province, into a family of scholars: his grandfather Wu Mengdan and uncle Wu Mengyi were both Qing Dynasty gongsheng, knowledgeable and good at calligraphy, and his father Wu Qiushan was a famous modern poet, writer and calligrapher in mainland China, who was proficient in the study of lexicography and hanmo, and taught classical literature in colleges and universities.

In his memories, Wu Shuoxian remembered that when he was a child, his family had a rich collection of books, and "Three Hundred Tang Poems", "Thousand Family Poems", and "Three Hundred Song Poems" were common. "Since I was a child, my father taught me the rhythm and rhythm of poetry, so when I was a child, I memorized the five and seven words of the last sentence and the rhythm of the poem very well." He said. Since junior high school, Wu Shuoxian has independently composed a number of poems, such as "The long sky is like a sea of clouds as a wave, the changes rise and the bubbles turn; the jade flies three hundred feet, and suddenly becomes a heavy rain falls on the earth" "The beginning of climbing science and technology, wandering the mathematical Tsui Yinghua", these imaginative verses are from his youth. The famous literary scholar Ye Shengtao once wrote a letter commenting on his works: "All works are generally good, and they have a taste after reading."

As a young man, he dreamed of inheriting his father's business and becoming a writer and writer, but Wu Shuoxian embarked on the road of science due to the changes of the times, and later became the first doctor in the field of architecture and acoustics in China. Fortunately, at an important point in life, the original poems burn Wu Shuoxian's mental journey.

"Devote yourself to learning the sea to find pearls and jade, and open up the path of books and mountains to collect Guizhi." Pack up and head north, and the future is like a golden ride. This is a heroic poem written by Wu Shuoxian before he went north to Tsinghua to study. Sino-Soviet relations broke down in the 1960s, and Soviet scientific and technological experts were withdrawn. In response to the state's call for young people to strive to march into the field of science and technology, Wu Shuoxian resolutely decided to devote himself to science studies. In 1965, he was admitted to Tsinghua University with the highest score in the country with the highest score in science in Fujian Province.

During the interruption of his studies, Wu Shuoxian was successively assigned to the Xi'an Railway Bureau and the Nanchang Railway Bureau to work at the construction site. Starting from the rough work of ordinary workers, he did not complain at all, carrying cement up the mountain, living in a green-skinned "dormitory", running a cave to measure... Although this was not Wu Shuoxian's original idea to study, he "searched for pearls" and "collected guizhi" in this field, during which he taught himself more than 20 structural processes and enriched his theoretical knowledge.

In 1978, after the national resumption of graduate enrollment, Wu Shuoxian seized the opportunity to successfully enter Tsinghua University as a graduate student majoring in building technology science. In order to explore the study of urban acoustics in China, he also studied with Wu Liangyong and Ma Dayu, two academic giants, to creatively combine architecture and acoustics to carry out pioneering research. After obtaining his doctorate, Wu Shuoxian felt inspired and wrote, "The frontier field began to expand, and the Rational And Wei Wen was woven into a brocade." ”

In 2005, at the age of 57, Wu Shuoxian was elected as the first academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the field of building technology and science in China. After doing half a life's research, he was still unfazed, and wrote down: "Half a life's pursuit of making uses, and the study of life is expensive and insistent." The clear tone of the hall resounded, and the color ink was casually brushed at the bottom of the pen. ”

Poetry city knots, civil articles a total of a hundred years

If life could be repeated, how would you choose between a scientist and a poet? Asked about this, Wu Shuoxian's answer was "choosing science" and "poetry can be used as a good hobby, which is not contradictory to the profession.". Adhering to the concept of the common sense of literature and science, poetry has become a continuous stream of "accelerants" on Wu Shuoxian's scientific research road.

In 1998, after being transferred to South China University of Technology, Wu Shuoxian continued to contribute to the acoustic fringe field of the built environment in mainland China, led the team to run the site to carry out field measurements, and successively undertook nearly 100 engineering acoustic research and design tasks, filling many gaps in the field of architectural acoustics.

The State Key Laboratory of Subtropical Building Science of South China University of Technology was approved for construction in 2007 and is the first and currently the only state key laboratory in the field of architecture in mainland China. Wu Shuoxian is the director of the laboratory and the academic leader of the innovation team of "Subtropical Building Physical Environment and Building Energy Efficiency". In this laboratory, there is a 1:20 geometric miniature model of the Opera Hall of the Guangzhou Opera House, which contains a lot of articles.

Wu Shuoxian directs research at the State Key Laboratory of Subtropical Building Science at South China University of Technology, and the picture shows a 1:20 geometric miniature of the Opera Hall of the Guangzhou Opera House.

Wu Shuoxian told reporters that more than a year before the official opening of the Guangzhou Opera House, he led the team to experiment with the acoustic shrinkage model and field tests, "in order to make the Guangzhou Opera House 'sound perfect', to ensure that high-fidelity sound effects can be heard at every location." Under the ingenious design, the Guangzhou Opera House was also rated as "the world's top ten opera houses". "Acoustics itself is a branch of physics, but if we want to study the acoustic environment, itself is a concern for people's hearing, let people appreciate music and drama, then literature and art and physical science itself are intertwined." Wu Shuoxian said.

Over the years, Wu Shuoxian has skillfully integrated Chinese poetry culture with modern architectural design, exploring the inspiration of nature, architecture and literature from ancient poetry, and nurturing master works and master ideas. In the field of urban and rural planning, he believes that it is necessary to achieve "loud sounds and sounds, and elephants are invisible", which is an aesthetic concept advocated by Lao Tzu in the Tao Te Ching. Inspired by this, Wu Shuoxian put forward the concept of "urban blank", "architecture is solidified music, and white space is also needed between buildings and buildings to constitute the beauty of urban and rural areas".

In terms of the discipline of viewing, Wu Shuoxian creatively proposed the concept of "three scenes integration" of soundscape, fragrant scenery and lightscape, which appeals to people's sense of hearing, smell and vision to enjoy the scenery. He took the ancient people's description of Hangzhou's West Lake as an example, "willow wave singing warbler" and "Nanping evening bell" are sound scenes, "Three Autumn Guizi" and "Ten Mile Lotus" are fragrant scenes, and "Three Pools Reflecting the Moon" and "Pinghu Autumn Moon" are rich changes in the scenery.

Wu Shuoxian believes that natural beauty is the "fusion of three scenes". In order to better study the concept of "three scenes", he analyzed the "Book of Poetry" in depth and found that 28% of the contents were related to soundscapes, such as "Guan Guan Ju Dove" and "Yo Yo Deer Singing", reflecting the beautiful soundscape of insects and birds singing. He was also inspired by the ancients' depictions of the scenery, such as "the sunrise of the sun" and "the moon rises brightly, the best people are good", and put forward the structure of the urban landscape, which not only responds to the country's call for green environmental protection, but also plays an important role in the construction of a pleasant environment.

He is the stone of the mountain and can attack jade. His rich poetry achievements have given Wu Shuoxian a research idea and perspective that is "different from ordinary people". In the field of science and engineering, especially architecture, it is actually a combination of science and art, and Academician Wu personally discovers the common point of "beauty" from it, learns from tradition, and improves the quality of human settlements.

After the admonition, he wrote more and left it in the world

"There are specialties in the art industry, but the amateur sea and the sky." Wu Shuoxian laughed about his lifelong love of poetry and song.

After retirement, Wu Shuoxian maintained a regular schedule synchronized with nature, accompanied by the moon to sleep, and greeted the rising sun. More than six years ago, he developed a "special" habit of sharing original new poems in the circle of friends after waking up around 5:30 a.m., maintaining an average of one poem per day at almost daily frequency.

In 2016, on the eve of his seventieth birthday, Wu Shuoxian opened WeChat with the help of students, had a circle of friends, and has insisted on writing poems in the morning in the circle of friends. "In the past, it was collected into volumes and published by publishing houses, but now it is indeed more convenient to share," Wu Shuoxian said, adding that the inspiration for composing poems is widespread, and natural scenery, social current events, life perceptions, and young past events can all be written into poems. Sometimes inspiration comes to mind, and Wu Shuoxian will also write two or three poems a day. At that time, he had already integrated and published works such as "Even Yin Collection" and "Heng Yin Collection".

Wu Shuoxian displayed his handwritten calligraphy works on the spot.

I have to say that the Internet has indeed added to the new fun of Wu Shuoxian's poetry, "I found that many scientific and technological workers may not necessarily create, but they are very interested in the poems I post, and they also know how to appreciate." "The likes received in the circle of friends and the WeChat group can always make Wu Shuoxian happy," many of the works they liked are also works that I am more satisfied with. In his view, this is a kind of beneficial exchange of like-mindedness and appreciation.

"Our Chinese tradition of poetry and song from the Book of Poetry, Chu Ci, and Han Fu to Tang Poetry, Song Ci, and Yuan Qu is unceasing, and it is also a major contribution made by the Chinese nation to world civilization." With poetry all his life, Wu Shuoxian hopes that excellent traditional culture such as poetry and song can be continued among the younger generation. In addition to serving as a consultant to the poetry club at Tsinghua University and South China University of Technology, Wu Shuoxian has recently added a new identity, the consultant of the Poetry Work Committee of the Chinese Poetry Society, to promote poetry culture to the younger generation on campus.

Not long ago, Wu Shuoxian was invited to participate in the "Poetic Flower City , Hearing the Blossoming" Bay Area Poetry Night Activity. He said that Lingnan has been the "capital of poetry" since ancient times, and there has always been no shortage of sages who created poems such as "I write my mouth by hand". Guangzhou should do a good job in popularizing education, attach importance to cultivating young people's interest in poetry, and stimulate their sense of responsibility for inheriting poetry culture. "Starting from the doll, first learn to appreciate and like poetry, and then pay attention to guidance and cultivation, and slowly begin to create poetry."

In Wu Shuoxian's view, Guangzhou's "poetry" is everywhere, learn to hear the sound of "beauty", and write poetry everywhere in life. He stressed that poetry creation is not fixed in the rules, but has inheritance and innovation, integrating modern vocabulary for innovation. He is not opposed to "old bottles of new wine", and learns to reflect contemporary life and reflect new things through the practice of creation, which is also of great significance to the artistic appreciation of future generations.
