【Preamble】

My country is a land of poetry. In the long history of the Chinese nation, poetry is like a magnificent flower, rooted in the soil of traditional culture, blooming in the garden of human civilization, emitting a refreshing fragrance and showing fascinating charm. Some poems contain descriptions of natural phenomena, and even penetrate the poet's understanding and comprehension of natural phenomena and even natural laws. These literary grafted verses of science shine with the light of wisdom, full of inspiration and vitality. It can be said that from the "Book of Poetry", "Chu Ci", Han Fu all the way to modern ancient poetry, good poetry and song endowment is not only a treasure of literature and art, a carrier of knowledge, but also a source of thought, which not only gives people artistic edification and ideological enlightenment, but also stimulates people's curiosity and guides people's exploration of science.

The two authors of this book uniquely analyze the scientific phenomena mentioned or related in the poems, and combine the relevant scientific knowledge and methods to analyze and interpret the poems, which can be described as the rationality in the poem, the poetry in the theory, the combination of poetry and theory, and the ingenuity. Although they are engaged in the research and teaching of science and engineering, they are also quite interested in poetry, especially ancient poetry, which not only cultivates sentiments, but also promotes the integration of literature and science, increases the affinity and interest of scientific knowledge, increases the rationality and creativity of poetry analysis, and receives unexpected results. This book is the crystallization of their hard work, and it is worth encouraging to publish now.

Physics is the basic discipline of natural science, whether it is "nine days to catch the moon", or "catch turtles in the next five oceans"; whether it is architectural design, or quantum communication; whether it is precision agricultural aviation, or intelligent unmanned farms; whether it is weather phenomena, or people's daily life are inseparable from the application of physical knowledge and governed by physical laws. The word "physics" in ancient China mainly denoted the truth of the operation of things. Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty said in the "Two Songs of Qu jiang" that "the fine push of physics must be happy"; Su Shi of the Song Dynasty said in the "Record of Ling Xutai": "Although it is not the cause of profit and loss, but physics has an unassuming"; Ji Yun of the Qing Dynasty wrote in "Stone Beasts in the River": "Ersheng cannot study physics", etc., all of which mean this. After physics was introduced to China, it was translated as "physics" with cultural basis, but its scope of study was expanded to the structure of matter and the laws of object motion. In this way, the encounter between poetry and physics has existed since ancient times. The further excavation of this person is worthy of encouragement and affirmation. In fact, the various things in nature and human society are themselves regardless of specialization, and the division of professions is entirely due to the convenience of human beings in order to understand and study things. Therefore, I have always advocated the division of labor in arts and sciences rather than the division of families, and should examine and understand various things and phenomena in nature and human society from a multidisciplinary and multi-professional perspective. Although I am mainly engaged in the teaching and research of science and engineering, I also like poetry creation and calligraphy in my spare time, and have published many poetry and calligraphy anthologies. Therefore, although I have never known the author of this book, I am still willing to accept the author's entrustment to write the preface to this book.

Recently, China issued the outline of the 2021-2035 national action plan for scientific quality, pointing out that improving scientific quality is of great significance for citizens to establish a scientific world outlook and methodology, to enhance the country's independent innovation ability and cultural soft power, and to build a socialist modern power. The publication of Poetry and Science is undoubtedly in keeping with this purpose. This book enlightens people to appreciate poetry, to be good at speculating and deliberating on the words and sentences in it, and to find its related description of natural phenomena from some poems, and analyze the scientific principles behind it. At the same time, further learning relevant scientific knowledge and methods through some descriptions in the poems not only helps to further display the charm of ancient poems, but also helps to promote the creation of a social atmosphere of love of science. Especially for the majority of young students, they can benefit from both literature and science at the same time, which is nothing more than a beneficial attempt. I believe this work will be welcomed by readers.
