Qian opera originated from the "pop song" Yangqin in Guizhou during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty.

As an emerging local opera genre developed on the basis of yangqin, in February 1960, "Qian opera" was officially named. After continuous reform and development, this folk rap art sung by the Guizhou dialect has evolved into a type of opera with local characteristics and performance styles. In June 2008, Qianju opera was officially included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
