During the Warring States period, the State of Qin would choose to sacrifice Xuan You every time he raised an army to the east, and even when Liu Bang, the ancestor of Han Gao, raised an army in Pei County, he also made sacrifices to Xuan You, so that he could successfully revolt and overthrow the violent Qin.
So why didn't you sacrifice Xuan You instead of the Yellow Emperor? This is because during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty after the han dynasty was firmly established, a campaign of "deposing hundreds of families and respecting Confucianism alone" was introduced, which was led by the minister Dong Zhongshu, during which Confucianism gained rapid spread, while other doctrines were ruthlessly suppressed.
There is a very famous view in Confucianism, that is, "the winner is the king, and the loser is the Kou", because Xuan you was finally defeated by the Yellow Emperor in the battle with the Yellow Emperor, so the Confucians did not advocate the sacrifice of Xuan You again, but carried out a series of ugliness on Xuan You, and the object of sacrifice was gradually changed to the Yellow Emperor.
Then in the last year of the Western Han Dynasty, Wang Mang usurped the government to establish a "new" dynasty, in order to better cater to the people's hearts, he completely identified the Yellow Emperor as the ancestor of the Han people, built the Yellow Emperor temple throughout the country, and let the people worship the Yellow Emperor, after which the Yellow Emperor was also considered to be the only ancestor of the Han people to be sacrificed, and Xuan You was gradually forgotten by people.
In summary, the yellow emperor's tribe was a semi-agricultural and semi-nomadic people, which was better than the purely nomadic Xuanyu tribe. People first sacrificed more frequently than Xuan You, until the implementation of Confucianism in the Han Dynasty, which allowed people to change the object of sacrifice to the Yellow Emperor.
