Directly hit MWC| China Telecom ZhangXin: Co-construction and sharing save 5G network investment of more than 210 billion yuan

Zhang Xin, general manager of China Telecom's 5G Co-construction and Sharing Working Group, said at the 2022 Mobile World Congress that since China Telecom and China Unicom fully launched the 5G network co-construction and sharing in 2019, after more than 2 years of close cooperation and continuous innovation, the world's first and largest 200MHz 5G SA co-construction and sharing commercial network has been built, achieving leapfrog technology leadership.

Directly hit MWC| China Telecom ZhangXin: Co-construction and sharing save 5G network investment of more than 210 billion yuan

According to GSA statistics, by the end of 2021, more than 140 countries around the world have deployed more than 200 5G networks, built more than 2 million 5G base stations, shipped more than 600 million 5G terminals, and reached 440 million 5G users.

As the world's largest commercial country, China has accelerated the development of global 5G, with remarkable results. Among them, it contributed 34.6% of the world's 5G core standards, opened more than 1.4 million 5G base stations, achieved coverage of all urban areas, 5G user penetration rate exceeded 30%, 5G terminals exceeded 490 million, accounting for more than 70% of the world, and more than 10,000 application innovation cases in 5G vertical industries, ranking first in the world.

Italia co-construction and sharing

The cumulative savings of 5G network investment exceeded 210 billion yuan

In terms of technological innovation, China Telecom has led the completion of more than 10 core technical standards for 3GPP, more than 50 global PCT sharing technology patents have been authorized, and through the core technology research of the joint industrial chain, it has solved a series of networking and operation problems such as doubling the bandwidth of co-construction and sharing, multi-screen coexistence, two-in-one, 4/5G collaboration, etc., ensuring that the user perception and experience under the co-construction and sharing network are good.

In terms of operational innovation, the first is to build the world's first scheduling system based on blockchain operation, realize the on-chain verification of key core parameters such as the configuration of switching resources of more than 4 million shared base stations, support national joint planning, construction scheduling and other work, solve the problem of different business scheduling systems, resource coordination and fair scheduling, and more than double the operational efficiency. The second is to build the world's largest shared network, full-time AI intelligent energy-saving system, to achieve a 5G base station daily comprehensive energy-saving efficiency of more than 15%, to solve the whole network, cross-manufacturer 4/5G collaboration of unified base station smart energy-saving problems, to help green double carbon. The third is to build the world's first toB and toC dual-slice shared network, which is fully applied to more than 240 commercial projects of 5G customized networks, and solves the problems of different business needs and business operations of toB/C users under the shared network.

China Telecom and China Unicom have shared collaborative innovation through 5G and achieved rich results. By the end of 2021, the two sides have saved more than 210 billion yuan in 5G network investment, saved network operating costs of 20 billion yuan per year, saved more than 10 billion kWh of electricity, reduced carbon emissions by more than 6 million tons, and simultaneously pulled the maturity of the upstream and downstream industrial chains, improved the user experience, laid a solid foundation for the wide application of the industrial Internet in the future, and helped the rapid development of 5G globally.

New Cluster DSS

Improve the 5G user experience

As we all know, 3.5GHz C-band is the mainstream frequency band of 5G defined globally, but compared with 2/3/4G, its frequency is high and its penetration is poor, which brings great challenges to the rapid formation of 5G network coverage, ensuring a good indoor and outdoor experience for users, and operator construction and operating costs. "In particular, it is more difficult to meet the new service requirements of 5G toB and toC new service scenarios, such as low latency, large connections, wide coverage, and deep penetration." Therefore, it has become a global consensus to deeply cultivate the 4G frequency band to achieve rapid deployment of 5G. Zhang Xin said frankly.

It is understood that the proportion of operators in the global 5G network reconstructing the 4G band is about 50%, and the proportion of operators in China's 5G network reconstructing the 4G band has reached 67%, far higher than the global average. However, the current 4G network still carries a large number of services, according to GlobalData forecast, in 2025, global 5G services will surpass 4G for the first time, but 4G services still account for about 40%. 4G networks must not only carry 4G traffic, but also meet the needs of 5G coverage, which has become a huge challenge facing the current global 4G spectrum reconstruction.

How to efficiently reconstruct the 4G spectrum is the key to the rapid development of global 5G. According to Zhang Xin, the current industry widely adopts the DSS solution, which can solve the problem of dynamic sharing of 4G and 5G spectrum and achieve rapid reconstruction of 4G spectrum, but DSS can only achieve 4/5G resource allocation at the level of a single station, and cannot coordinate the allocation of resources between adjacent stations, resulting in 4/5G suppressed interference has always existed, especially 4G CRS has the greatest impact on 5G interference. "According to field tests, after activating DSS under the same bandwidth, the available resources are reduced by more than 20% compared with those without DSS, and the average interference is increased by more than 3Db, resulting in a reduction in 5G user rates by more than 40%."

Faced with this problem, China Telecom and ZTE technical team jointly tackled the problem and launched the Cluster DSS on the basis of DSS, which realized the dynamic resource sharing and resource scheduling touched by the base station. Based on the base station cluster, the resources in the base station cluster are uniformly distributed, and there is no interference in the cluster. The 4/5G suppressed interference only exists at the cluster boundary, and the 5G user rate is increased by more than 70%, which significantly improves the resource utilization rate.

"All in all, Cluster DSS proactively discovers sites with the same traffic mode, and then automatically aggregates them into a cluster of base stations, harmonizes policies within the cluster, minimizes suppressed interference, and improves the 5G user experience and network efficiency." Zhang Xin explained.

Recently, China Telecom and ZTE conducted a Cluster DSS field experiment in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and from the analysis of the test results, Cluster DSS increased the downlink rate of 5G users on 2.1GHz networks by 70%, while the performance of 4G user networks also remained stable.
