Celebrity reviews

Cheng Peng is both a painter and a purple sand pottery artist. As a painter, he is a disciple of the famous painter Mr. He Jialin, who has won many awards in national art exhibitions and is a member of the Chinese Beauty Association; as a purple sand pottery engraver, he has been engaged in purple sand pottery carving for more than 30 years. Such compound talents are rare in the purple sand industry.

Because he has a deep foundation in the creation of Chinese painting and the accumulation of pottery carvings for decades, his pottery carvings have unique characteristics. Cheng Peng's pottery carving works are known for their vivid rhyme, in terms of technique, whether it is a double knife or a single knife, they are combined with the brushwork of Chinese painting, rich in light and heavy, fast and slow rhythm changes, at the same time, he pays attention to the shape and layout of the chapter, and is good at using the contrasting application of line and surface, virtual and real.

In his teaching, Cheng Peng advocated that the pottery carving works should be original, and the decoration of the purple sand pot should be "relevant and meaningful", and strive to pursue the "literary atmosphere" of the works. He told the trainees not to use the "light stroke, light scratch" method to depict the object, because this technique looks delicate, but it is very rigid and lacks interest. He believes that Chinese painting should "see the pen" and pottery carving should "see the knife", so that such works will be alive.

Cheng Peng's love for Chinese painting is in the bone. When he was already famous in the local area, he gave up his stable career in pottery carving and came to the National Academy of Painting of China to study, and then entered the first advanced research class that I taught at the National Academy of Painting, which lasted for six years. Cheng Peng's pursuit of Chinese painting is "axis". When his works have won many awards in national art exhibitions and joined the China Artists Association, he went back to studying tradition and continued to draw nourishment from the classic works of the ancients. This back and forth is ten years. Today, compared with ten years ago, his works have a degree of law, the picture has layers, more fun and literary tone, can be tasted, can be read. A work of art must have its own artistic language and be self-contained, which is what a true artist must have, and it is also what Cheng Peng has been pursuing, but it cannot be sought prematurely. With a solid foundation and fertile soil nourished, I believe that Cheng Peng can show wood in the forest.

Create with feeling

◎ To learn Chinese painting well, to obtain the Fa, you also need a lot of professional training. Chinese painting creation pays attention to subjective consciousness, with the aesthetics of brush and ink as the mainstay, supplemented by the aesthetics of objects and images. Whether it is "freehand painting" or "gong brush painting", its essence is freehand, that is, using exquisite pen and ink to borrow things to express nostalgia. Just as the traditional painting theory only mentions "photography", "writing God", "sketching" and "freehand", but does not say "realistic". Blindly pursuing realism and realism, but ignoring freehand, it is not law-abiding; holding a pen like a broom, wantonly scribbling, and pursuing freehand on the surface, in fact, the pen and ink are not refined, the painting is not reasonable, and the lack of professional training is "jianghu habits".

◎ Since ancient times, purple sand handicrafts have been loved by the people because of their practicality, and they are also favored by literati and scholars because of their elegant carrying style. Many calligraphy and painting literati are happy to participate in the pot making process, especially the purple sand decoration link. The square inch of purple sand has become the carrier of the literati and scholars. Available, playable, and rewarding, making the purple sand crafts unique. Contemporary calligraphers and painters participate in purple sand decoration, in addition to having skilled craftsmanship, but also inherit and carry forward the humanistic tradition. This is the sense of mission that those of us who live in the hometown of Purple Sand should have.
