Herbert James Draper 英国
1863—1920
Herbert James Draper was an English painter who was born in London in 1863. He began his artistic career at St. John's Wood School of Art and entered the Royal College of Art in 1884 to study painting.
In 1889, he was awarded a scholarship to travel to Spain, Morocco, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. These travels enriched his artistic insights and provided him with broad inspiration for his later creations.
After traveling, Draper returned to England and set up his own studio in Kensington. In 1894, he gained great success in an exhibition called "Mermaids", which made him famous as a high-profile painter of the time. In 1913, he held a retrospective exhibition that reviewed his artistic achievements over the years.
《哀悼伊卡洛斯》Lament for Icarus
It is a subject of Greek mythology, which won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle.
Icarus was the son of the Athenian architect Daedalus, who built a labyrinth for King Minos of Crete to imprison the monster Minotaur, but was also placed under house arrest as a captive.
The father and son glued the collected bird feathers into giant wings with beeswax and put them on their bodies to fly out of the labyrinth. Before leaving, his father repeatedly told Icarus: "Don't fly too low, and don't fly too high, or the sun will melt the beeswax." ”
But the moment Icarus flew out of the labyrinth to see the sun, he was attracted by the beauty and dazzling light, and he wanted to fly high to the sun despite his father's advice, and finally the blazing heat melted his feathers, and Icarus fell from the sky into the sea, drowning in the waves, and this sea was later named the Ikaria.
Ariadne the Abandoned
Draper considers Icarus to be "the other heroes of the Pre-Raphaelites and Symbolism, who were young, happy in life, and died young, leaving behind a beautiful body and soul that rose into the air." ”
Draper's work is known for his portraits, and his painting style blends realism and impressionism. His characters are lifelike, exuding an air of intellect and elegance. Through his subtle use of light, shadow and colour, he gives his works a dramatic effect, immersing the viewer in the world he has created.
However, just when he was at the peak of his career, fate played a big joke on him. Draper died in London in September 1920 at the age of 57.
