"Reading Handbook" - Reading Notes Guide Sharing

This text number is 3879 and the estimated reading time is 10 minutes.

The book shared today is The Handbook of Reading Aloud.

Jim Trelease is an American expert in reading research and extension. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, he worked for the Springfield Daily for 20 years as a writer and painter. During this time, he volunteered every week to go to community schools and talk to his children about topics related to his career.

In 1979, he published a pamphlet at his own expense to promote the importance of reading aloud and compiled a reading list. This is the prototype of the Reading Handbook. Since 1983, Trilis has devoted himself to educational research activities, speaking to parents, teachers and professional groups on topics such as children, literature and television media. In 1989, Jim Trilis was named one of the 8 people who contributed to the promotion of reading in the 1980s by Reading International. On January 31, 2008, Trilis ended a public speech and decided to retire to spend time with his family.

Why is it important to read aloud to your child? When do I start reading to my child? What can I do to prolong my child's concentration time? What books are suitable for children of different ages? What happens when you watch too much TV? How long does watching TV be harmless to your child? The Reading Handbook is a summary of Trilis's decades of research and practice on children's reading instruction. Through many specific and credible cases, the book points out the problems and solutions that children may encounter in the reading process, and clarifies the benefits, methods and precautions of reading aloud. It has helped countless parents and teachers solve difficult educational problems, and made countless children become lifelong book lovers.

Why read aloud

Studies have shown that people are a species that learns language through hearing, we listen first, and then read the text, it should be said that in the process of reading aloud, children learn language and enrich their vocabulary.

Read aloud to the child, then the different features of the language, such as pronunciation, syllables, endings, mixed consonants, are integrated into the story, with the child's love, into his hearing, into his brain, so the child will fall in love with reading, will learn faster.

0 to 4 years old children, his brain is like a reservoir, from listening vocabulary leaks to oral vocabulary, then reading vocabulary, and finally writing vocabulary, which is the secret behind the gap between children's learning ability and academic level caused by reading.

1. Create a reading environment

Many parents will ask: I have read so many extracurricular books to my child, can it help his academic level? Jim Trilis said that a very effective tutoring session for the Academic Proficiency Level Test for American high school graduates (the U.S. college entrance exam, which also includes the U.S. college entrance exam) is to read the child before going to bed when he is still young. Over time our child will feel that this is a very wonderful experience, and he will start to read on his own.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of parents to ignite children's enthusiasm for reading, and there will definitely be parents who say: Shouldn't this be the responsibility of the school? Jim Trilis said: "A child spends about 900 hours a year at school and about 7,800 hours at home. Therefore, there is such a huge time difference, at home is definitely the most critical scene for raising children, and the ignition of reading is done at home.

If the mother often reads books and newspapers at home, then the proportion of children with high interest in reading is 95.2%. If the father's leisure activities are watching TV and playing games, correspondingly, the proportion of children's high reading interest will decline, only 35.1%; and the father often reads, reads, reads newspapers, reads novels, and practices, then the proportion of children's high reading interest will rise to 62.5%.

Parents often take their children to the library, and the proportion of children's high interest in reading is 98.1%, that is to say, reading is a skill, reading is a skill, it needs to be trained, it needs to be led.

2. How to fall in love with reading

There are two laws of liking to read:

First, human beings pursue happiness, and only happy, positive feedback with a sense of accomplishment will make people fall in love with reading, not pain. Second, reading is an accumulative, gradual process.

There are three main motivations for falling in love with reading:

First, I like the experience of reading, and I have formed this beautiful feeling of reading with my parents since I was a child.

Second, I like the theme of the book. Being very interested in themes, or fairy tales, fables, or fictional stories, will stimulate children's great interest in reading.

Third, they like to imitate people who read a lot. Children need someone who leads them forward in his reading life, who may be a dad, a mom, a teacher, or a companion.

The preparation for reading is not only from books, it also comes from a lot of background knowledge, conversation is a reservoir, is a reservoir of vocabulary, we talk to children more, read aloud for children, especially read aloud, is to help children to form a very good scene of background knowledge.

2

When to start and end aloud

When will we start reading to our children? In fact, before children are born, they are already learning to speak, and one study said that a child is actually listening to his mother's voice 6 months before birth.

1. When to start

One experiment is to read the same story to the child three times a day three times a day before birth, and after the child is born, he will remember the voice and respond: if the mother often reads the story to him when pregnant, then the child will react to the mother's voice; it is the father who reads the story to him, the child will react immediately, the frequency of the pacifier will become higher, the child is excited, and the brain will be more active.

For example, there was a girl Irene. Her mother loves books, and at 21 months, Erin was able to say relatively complete sentences. That's because mom loves books, moms often read aloud for their children, ask her questions and answers, so at 21 months, Irene already knows thousands of words, and this is enough reservoir of Irene's listening vocabulary. By the time she was 4 years old, Irene was already able to listen to a hundred pages of long stories in addition to picture books.

At the age of 12, she attended the orchestra and sports classes in the middle school, and the children went to club activities and sports classes, and it seemed that they were not studying, but they were really important.

In the first grade, Erin herself said, I don't want to read baby books anymore, I want to read books myself when I can read long stories. The enthusiasm with which she read on her own had grown.

Irene volunteers every week, what do volunteers do? Read to children aged 4 to 5. When you read aloud to others, your reading ability is greatly improved.

Irene grew up and became a generous, confident, well-rounded student, her American college entrance examination results - the vocabulary score of the American high school graduate academic ability level test is 800 points, the average grade point of college graduation ranks first in the class, and more importantly, she has become a self-read, lifelong learning, cheerful, confident, lifelong reader with her own ideals.

There are three things that are extremely important for children to read. First, let the child connect reading with pleasure; second, learn together; third, read aloud. The author said that to improve children's reading ability, there are three things that can improve children's reading ability. Books, book baskets and bedside lamps. With these three things, the child will love books more and more and read books more and more autonomously in different scenes at home.

2. When to end

In fact, according to research, the average American child in the high school stage, in fact, there are not many parents for the child to continue to read, so what to do in middle school? Jim's advice is that before the child graduates from high school, in fact, they should maintain the habit of reading regularly and reading aloud every day, and it is not too late to start reading, but this habit, this kind of reading life, can it be made to end a little later, before your child truly becomes an independent reader, and the parents' reading aloud and reading a book conversation together are actually indispensable.

First of all, it is best not to miss the sensitive period of language at the age of 0 to 8. After the age of 13, it is more difficult to continue to read with your child and have resonance. If 0 to 8 years old are doing well, children have reading interest, children have reading habits, and the collection of books at home is rich enough, then after the age of 13, you can also read with your children.

How to read aloud correctly

Reading aloud also has methods and taboos, and we need to avoid a lot of pitfalls when teaching children to read aloud. Let's talk about each other.

1. The essentials of reading aloud

First, read to the child as soon as possible, but do not rush to let the child read and write, listen first, and read aloud to the child who has just been born toddler, the main content should be a book with repeated sentences. Schedule at least one fixed time to read the story each day. The habit of listening is acquired, and we must gradually teach and cultivate children, that is, we must slowly cultivate the habit of listening.

Before starting to read aloud, tell the child the title and author, and then see how the cover picture is, which is a sense of ceremony, and the time of reading can be asked about the child. Reading aloud must have a beginning and an end, and it must be continuous, so that the child hears a relatively complete story. Occasionally, you can read some difficult books to challenge your child's mind.

When reading aloud, the expression is rich, and there are some character performances. This is something that only a high-level reader can do. When reading aloud, you should read slowly so that your child can hear the whole rhythm of reading clearly. Read it yourself first, marking out the places you can reduce and delete. For an active child, give him a crayon or pencil that allows him to listen and write and draw at the same time.

2. Taboos of reading aloud

Don't read books you don't like, and if you find yourself choosing the wrong one, change one right away. In fact, that kind of reading that cannot be stopped is the fuel that promotes children to become a real reader, do not let the child bear too much burden, persevere, fix ten minutes a day, and slowly accumulate.

When reading aloud, you should not let yourself and your child sit too comfortably, because the child is prone to drowsiness. If your child always asks questions while you read, tell your child patiently not to interrupt your child's curiosity.

Finally, I would like to briefly share the different stages of children's reading. 0 to 3 years old is the child's audiovisual and tactile enlightenment, and it is necessary for the child to be able to access books. This is the initiation stage for children.

3 to 8 years old need to use picture books, now the concept of graded reading, age reading is more and more accepted by Chinese parents, then picture books are very good reading material for 3 to 8 years old. In addition, rhymes are very important, and many parents do not understand why children always want to repeat.

Rhyme is a book for many children, it is constantly repeated, a child to repeat learning, repeated into a vocabulary, is 3 to 8 years old children to learn language, increase vocabulary is an important way.

8 to 12 years old can enter the stage of bridge books, stories, fairy tales are very good, it has both pictures, and words, and when reading aloud to the child, sometimes you can point to read, because the child will remember the appearance of the vocabulary according to your fingers, and the hearing is linked, enriching his vocabulary.

From the age of 12 to 18, you can enter the story of the chapters and even the reading of novels. The stage of the bridge book from reading pictures to reading words, after the end of the actual can enter the long story and novel, such reading can maintain the child's long-term attention, this long-term attention and reading habits of the formation, let him become a real learner.

When we accompany our children to read long stories, it is best to read a few chapters by ourselves first, you have a concept of the whole story, and then you read it to your child. Don't read and read you only to find out that I don't like this story, I don't like it, you will reveal it, and the child will feel bored.

Especially long stories, reading is very lengthy, the child begins to yawn, the child's attention, or need real-time stimulation and reminders, you need to delete some relatively lengthy chapters in advance.
