Once known as the "right hand of the free world" - the NATO standard FN FAL automatic rifle

The FN FAL automatic rifle uses a 7.62 caliber. The FAL (French: Fusil Automatique Légère, literal translation: "Light Automatic Rifle") is a combat rifle designed by the State Factory (FN) in Esttal, Belgium, using a 7.62×51 mm NATO cartridge.

Because FN Arsenal does not charge any royalties to nato countries that make FN FAL. As a result, the FAL is equipped as a standard rifle by a large number of NATO countries and non-Warsaw Convention countries. Compared with the Cold War situation at that time, it was once called "the right hand of the free world".

The FAL automatic rifle uses a pneumatic working principle and the bolt is offset latched. The gas guide is located above the barrel, and there is an adjustable spiral gas regulator at the front of the air guide hoop, which can adjust the gunpowder gas pressure entering the gas guide device when the gun is fired according to different environmental conditions, and the 22 mm gun grenade can be optionally fired. With an empty compartment hanging mechanism, the pull handle that does not move with the bolt is located on the left side of the receiver, the fast and slow machine can choose single shot and burst shooting modes, the receiver is equipped with a foldable handle, and the muzzle is equipped with a flame suppressor.

The FAL automatic rifle is well-crafted, highly reliable and easy to disassemble. The stock is in the same straight line as the barrel, and the shooter easily uses the shoulder to share the recoil, providing better grip stability.

The FAL automatic rifle has high accuracy in firing a single shot, but the distribution range of bullet points during continuous fire is large, and it becomes difficult to stabilize the grip, which is a problem in the choice of ammunition. To this end, the British version of the FAL, the L1A1, simply abolished the fully automatic firing mode, and could only be fired single-shot, used as a semi-automatic rifle.

In 1953 the FAL automatic rifle began production. Including licensed production and imitation, the gun has been used by the military and law enforcement agencies in more than 90 countries and regions, including the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia and other Commonwealth countries, as well as Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany (i.e. West Germany), Austria, Israel, India, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and other countries are equipped with FAL automatic rifle series. FN was still producing until the 1980s. The FAL automatic rifle became one of the most widely equipped military rifles in the country. The specific production of FAL cannot be accurately counted, and it is estimated that it will reach 4 million.

Under the influence of the small caliber trend brought by the M16, FAL was still widely used, until 1987, when the Belgian army decided to equip the 5.56mm caliber FNC, the FN company's FAL began to stop production, and many countries that were originally equipped with FAL also replaced the FAL with 5.56mm rifles. The FAL and its variant guns are still widely used, especially in African countries.
