Beijing, 10 Feb (China Youth Daily) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian announced at a regular news conference today that this year marks the 50th anniversary of President Nixon's visit to China and the signing of the Shanghai Communiqué. The Shanghai Communiqué is the first joint communiqué signed by China and the United States, which establishes the principles to be followed by the two countries in developing mutual relations, especially the "one China" principle, which has become the political basis for the normalization of Sino-US relations and the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The United States and China will hold a series of commemorative activities in the near future to review history and look forward to the future. The relevant information will be released by the Chinese side in a timely manner.

On February 21, 1972, US President Richard Nixon "broke the ice" to visit China, the result of which was that on February 28 of the same year, China and the United States issued a "Joint Communiqué", also known as the "Shanghai Communiqué", and Sino-US relations have since been normalized.
