According to foreign media reports, the global sales of plug-in hybrid passenger cars in 2021 are amazing, not only because of the huge increase in sales, but also because of the increase in sales in the case of the overall automobile market in trouble.
According to EV-Volumes data shared by Jose Pontes, more than 907,000 plug-in electric vehicles (which include PHEV and pure EVs) were registered worldwide in December, a record high. The previous monthly record was set in November 2021 (over 720,000 units).
The december sales figure for plug-in electric vehicles was about 59% higher than it was a year ago (close to 571,000, when reported by the same data source).
However, according to the report, the most important thing is that plug-in electric vehicles account for about 15% of the overall automotive market share. This is a significant increase from the previous record of 11.5% (November).
The vast majority of new plug-in vehicles sold are pure electric vehicles, with sales accounting for 11% of total sales in December last year.
Plug-in car registration data:
Pure electric vehicles: 11% share
Plug-in hybrid: 4% share
Total: 907,606 (up 59% yoY) and 15% market share
Meanwhile, non-rechargeable (traditional) hybrids registered about 650,000 units in December, up just 9 percent year-over-year.

Model ranking
The top three models sold in plug-in electric vehicles in 2021 are Tesla Model 3, Wuling Hongguang MINI EV and Tesla Model Y.
The data shows that Tesla Model 3 annual sales exceed 500,000 units (part estimates, the company reported a total of 911,242 Model 3/Model Y), which is the first time in a single model. It also means that the Model 3 has been the best-selling electric vehicle for four consecutive years (2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021).
The company's annual results were outstanding due to a new monthly record of more than 86,000 in December. However, as Jose Pontes reports, the Model 3's fourth-quarter performance is lower than the Model Y's, indicating that the lead in 2022 is about to change.
The Wuling Hongguang MINI EV also set a new personal monthly sales record (more than 55,000 units) in December and set a record of more than 424,000 units sold annually. It's one of the cheapest electric cars (actually mini-cars), which happens to be the key to its success.
Last December, Tesla Model Y sales hit a new record of 80,000 units. With an estimated sales of more than 410,000 units in 2021, it is expected to become the best-selling electric vehicle in 2022. In particular, two new plants will be operational later this year (one in Germany and one in Texas).
The remaining best-selling electric vehicles in 2021 include the Volkswagen ID.4, which sold more than 121,000 units, followed by five Chinese models: BYD Qin Plus Phev, Ideal One, BYD Han EV, BYD Song Pro/Plus PHEV, and Changan BenBEN EV.
