Nian Wei Li Shu Jia Feng: The Family Style Story Behind a Xinhua Dictionary

Loyalty has been passed down from generation to generation, and poetry has been passed down for a long time. The ancients had a good proverb: "Young and scholarly, like the light of the sunrise." "Family is the first school in life. Reading more books, reading good books, and letting the fragrance of books overflow the family is a good family style and good tutoring.

In 2021, the Li Xinhua family of the Guangzhou Academy of Literature and Art Creation won the title of "Book Fragrant Family" in Guangzhou.

Recently, the Nandu "Yangcheng Good Family Style" theme report team walked into this family, which can be described as a book with four walls and a collection of thousands of books. Li Xinhua said that their family training is "open books to smell the fragrance of books, lifelong learning", books are a good partner and a good guide for their family, and reading has become an important part of daily life.

Li Xinhua's family takes "opening the book to smell the fragrance of books, lifelong learning" as the family training.

Father's first gift: "Xinhua Dictionary"

This is a special study, and the sunlight shines through the window, which is extremely quiet. On weekdays, Li Xinhua writes here.

As the vice president of the Guangzhou Institute of Literature and Art Creation, he has been engaged in script writing for many years. Years of pen cultivation, fruitful. Cantonese opera, musicals, dramas, one after another scripts have been published. In the theater and on the stage, his works are very popular with the audience because of their unique ingenuity and brilliant writing.

On the shelves, from Ibsen's Plays to Peony Pavilion, every classic sparkles. Li Xinhua draws creative inspiration from these books, and in reading famous masterpieces, his characters come alive one by one, and at the same time have a sense of history.

Li Xinhua is a rural baby, he was born in Heshan, Guangdong Province. He recalled his childhood to the Nandu reporter, when the atmosphere of reading at home was strong, the family loved to read, and there were not many books to read in the countryside, but they were all looking for books to read.

"When I was six or seven years old, my grandfather was about 90 years old, and he was still studying at such an old age." He still remembers that his grandfather was reading chapter novels such as "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "Three Heroes and Five Righteousness" all day. His father was a village cadre at the time, belonged to the more educated village, and often read books, reading Lu Xun's works.

"Because of reading, my mother often blamed my father. It may be that reading books sinks in, and there is less housework. Li Xinhua joked. He remembered that there was a bookcase in the house at that time, although it was not large, but the books were neatly arranged. His parents taught him - "find a way out from reading, change your destiny", this sentence he still remembers.

His father's first gift to Li Xinhua was the Xinhua Dictionary published by the Commercial Press in the 1970s. The dictionary is the "window to the world", and this Xinhua Dictionary he has treasured for decades until now.

"At that time, when I was in the first grade, my father went to the cemetery to buy it for me and told me to study well. How many times have I moved home since then and never left it behind. This dictionary, I believe, can follow me for the rest of my life. Li Xinhua believes that the dictionary is his enlightenment, and the square characters make him a key step in recognizing people, things, and himself.

Li Xinhua remembered that his father also recommended "Dream of the Red Chamber" to him. "I can't watch it the first time, I can't stop it the second time, and I immediately watched it a third time." Li Xinhua said. He plunged headlong into the world of Daguanyuan and was addicted to the love story of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. "The power of that kind of artistic infection is too great, the atmosphere of the novel, the fate of the characters, etc., and it is too deep to feel that it is impossible to come out."

Behind the creation of over 30 scripts: a lot of reading

In the smoke of books, Li Xinhua fell in love with literature and had a literary dream.

When he was a student, the essays he wrote were always listed as excellent. After graduating from high school, he chose to become a soldier, and he never idled with a pen in his hand, he was a news reporter in his unit and wrote many stories about his military career.

After retiring from the army, Li Xinhua went to work in the bank. But he never forgot his literary dreams, constantly honing himself and looking for opportunities.

In 2004, he enrolled in the first Cantonese Opera Screenwriting Graduate Class and stood out as one of the 25 students. This postgraduate course of screenwriting was established under the background of the scarcity of Cantonese opera screenwriters in Guangdong Province, sponsored by the Guangdong Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the Provincial Dramatists Association, and jointly organized by the Graduate School of Sun Yat-sen University and the Guangdong Vocational College of Literature and Art.

Although he only had a certificate of completion and did not include assigned work, after 3 years of full-time study, Li Xinhua became a Cantonese opera creator. His literary ideals have since been projected onto theatrical creation and have blossomed.

So far, Li Xinhua has created more than 30 large-scale stage plays, and his works have won many awards. Nowadays, his reading habits are inseparable from his work, and reading has become a part of his daily life.

Li Xinhua introduced that a lot of reading and collecting materials is an essential prelude to writing, "basically half of the time is in creation, half of the time is in reading." In his eyes, reading and creating are the two wings of the bird and the two wheels of the car, reaching a benign interaction and promoting each other, and only then can they see the realm.

I hope that my son will become a useful person to society

Li Xinhua's wife, Huang Yuanfang, works at the Red Line Women's Art Center and is a docent at the art center. She also loves to read.

As a docent, it is not difficult to introduce the basic exhibition furnishings of the Red Line Women's Art Center, but visitors to the exhibition will ask a variety of questions. "It's too much for you to cope with, which forces you to read a lot of books about the Red Line Woman."

In this regard, Li Xinhua was deeply touched, and he believed that they won the honor of "Book Fragrant Family", not only because of the family collection, but also because of the reading atmosphere of family members and the "application of learning" of book knowledge.

Li Xinhua's son, Li Guoding, is currently attending university. He told reporters that for as long as he can remember, his father was a person who liked to read. "Most importantly, my father cultivated my habit of loving reading and learning. In comparison, the atmosphere of our home environment is good, which can make people sink their hearts. ”

Under the influence of the ear, Li Guoding also became a book lover. He also remembers that in his childhood, his father bought him Tang poems and Song Ci and bought "100,000 Whys", but he was different from his father's temperament. He did not like poetry and song, preferring the natural sciences, and "One Hundred Thousand Whys" opened his curiosity about the natural world.

Li Xinhua said that his son also participates in model aircraft competitions at school, etc., to play his strengths, and his parents will do their best to support him. Li Xinhua sighed that for the next generation, he has abandoned the excessive expectations of "the dragon and phoenix among people" and only hopes that his son can become a useful person to society.
