Do you know: What are the city flowers and city trees in Xiangyang?

In the early 1980s, the mainland entered the climax of the era of reform and opening up, and the cultural recovery was particularly remarkable, such as the enthusiasm for the selection of city flowers and city trees in various places.

At first, it was only the people who were surging up, but in 1986 it was officially listed by the Municipal People's Congress as a proposal and began to be evaluated. It is required that the city flower and the city tree must be well-known varieties planted locally and have a certain degree of uniqueness (that is, try to avoid duplication with other cities).

So a variety of recommendations were put together:

Popular market flowers to be selected are peonies, roses, moon seasons, roses, peach blossoms, chrysanthemums, osmanthus flowers, lotuses, morning glory, spring flowers, sunflowers, cannabis, azaleas, purple weeds and so on.

Popular city trees are peach trees, pear trees, apple trees, date trees, plum trees, persimmon trees, plane trees, ginkgo biloba, cypress trees, fir trees, chestnut trees, pepper trees, iron trees, Privet trees and so on.

As a result of the public preliminary evaluation, most of the public's favorite peony flowers and peach trees received the most votes. However, the scholarly expert level is very shaken by this, because it is not fully unique! For example, peony is too well-known, is the long-standing business card of Luoyang or Heze, and we Xiangyang will inevitably cause an embarrassing ending.

After several rounds of elimination narrowed the scope, the final decision fell to the Standing Committee of the Municipal People's Congress held in August 1986. The purple weed and privet trees, recommended by botanists and historians, were affirmed by most of the committee members, and finally a resolution was formed!

Why? Please see the authoritative explanation after the selection:

【Purple Weed Flower】

Also known as Mantang Red or Hundred Day Red, (1) is a native tree species in Xiangyang, with a long history of planting (recorded in early ancient books) ;(2) The flowers are gorgeous and cute, especially known for their long flowering period, which continues from early summer to late autumn. The Song Dynasty poet Yang Wanli saw the scene of Ziwei flowers blooming inside and outside Xiangyang City, and Shi Xing praised: "Whoever says that the flowers are red for a hundred days, and Ziwei blooms for half a year." (3) The meaning of ziwei flowers in Chinese culture is "good luck", which is considered to be a good luck guardian flower, and the legend contains "ziwei fairy" to attract wealth and treasure in the place where it blooms; (4) the city that is enthusiastic about ziwei flowers is extremely rare (the only contender is Shaoyang in Hunan), so it is the most suitable city flower for Xiangyang!

【Privet Tree】

It can remain an evergreen shrub above minus 10 degrees Celsius, and can grow into a tree when the climate and nutrients are sufficient, which is suitable for breeding in humid temperate regions. Cha Xiangyang is especially suitable for the growth of privets, which can grow more leafy and quickly become a forest than other places. Historical records record that the ancient Xiangyang people liked to tie fences (Fan hedges), often planting fast-growing Privet trees to naturally form hedges. This is our unique cultural heritage, and it is especially suitable for the city tree!

So there was no suspense, xiangyang's city flowers and city trees were finally promulgated by the resolution of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and the residents of the city warmly approved! Now you know what? Go and help promote our most representative flowers and trees
