At the end of the Shang Dynasty, the monarch of the Lone Bamboo Kingdom had 3 sons, Bo Yi was the eldest, and Shu Qi was the third oldest.
The Prince of Guzhu favored the third son, Shu qi, and intended to establish Shu Qi as the heir to the throne before his death. Therefore, before his death, he made a will and was succeeded by Shu Qi. After Shu Qi learned of this, he resolutely did not obey the will, but believed that the eldest brother Boyi Renyi Congmin had the style of a monarch and should elect Boyi as the new monarch of the lone bamboo country. The ministers also pushed the boat along the water and encouraged Boyi to take the opportunity to ascend to the throne, but the honest and self-respecting Boyi said: "Although as the eldest son, he can inherit the throne and the glory and wealth in name and righteousness, but he should first respect his father's will and give way to Shuqi." In order to avoid the three-day visit of the courtiers and the lobbying to urge the succession, Bo Yi gave up his right to be only one step away from him, and resolutely chose to leave, leaving the lonely bamboo country and wandering far away.

Shu Qi saw that the eldest brother was like this, so he simply did some etiquette and followed Bo Yi away.
After many hardships, it was not until the year of the tomb that Bo Yi and the Shuqi brothers met again, and under the mixed feelings, the brothers discussed: Hearing that King Wen of Zhou was a saint and loved the people like a son, the two decided to defect to King Wen of Zhou.
Unfortunately, when the two old men stumbled all the way to the Zhou Kingdom, King Wen had just died. The two brothers were walking on the road, and happened to meet the King of Wu, who was asking his retinue to carry the spiritual seat of King Wen to fight against the tyrannical and lawless Brother Shang. Seeing this scene, the two resolutely stepped forward to grab King Wu and advised: Your father died, and you did not bury him instead of making a big fuss. As a courtier of the King of Sui, you do not assist the monarch, but recruit new soldiers to rebel, what kind of benevolence is this?
King Wu was very annoyed when he heard this, and raised his weapon to kill them, but fortunately, Jiang Taigong stopped them from the side, and he stood up and helped the two of them and exclaimed, What a benevolent and righteous person. The dissuasion of the two old men did not work, and the army of King Wu of Zhou still marched like the capital of the Shang Dynasty. Looking at the distant figures of the brigade, the two old men could only sigh in vain.
After King Wu of Zhou destroyed the Shang, the whole world returned to king Zhou and recognized king Wu's status as the son of heaven, but Bo Yi and Shu Qi were ashamed of this and ashamed that they had not been able to stop this immoral behavior. The two men believed that if they could not change the major events of the world, they should at least be left alone, preferring to be the remnants of the Yin merchants rather than the shunmin of the Zhou Dynasty, so they decided to live in seclusion in Shouyang Mountain, that is, yongji in today's Shanxi Province, and rely on picking wild vegetables on Shouyang Mountain every day to feed their hunger. The two elderly men were losing weight. This is the allusion to "eating without eating Zhou Millet and picking wei".
One day, a woman came to Shouyang Mountain to collect firewood, listened to their stories, and laughed and said, "Under the whole world, can you not be the king's land, lead the soldiers of the land, can you be the king's subjects?" Aren't the wild vegetables that the two of you eat also from our Zhou Tianzi? The woman's words gave Bo Yi and Shu Qi a blow, and since then the two of them have stopped eating the only wild vegetables and have begun to live by drinking spring water.
Bo Yi and Shu Qi could have enjoyed the glory and wealth, but in order to uphold the morality in their hearts, they successively gave up the throne; in order to uphold the heart of benevolence and righteousness, they did not want to join the same stream, did not eat Zhou Su, and finally both starved to death on the Shouyang Mountain.
Confucius referred to the two as "ancient sages", and Sima Qian compared their virtues to Sun Moon and Mount Tai, praising: "... Zhaohu sun and moon are not bright enough, Kunhu Taishan is not enough Weigao... "
Throughout their lives, although benevolence and morality are precious, and noble moral character is beyond their reach, they have not made any contributions to society and families, and even have no sense of responsibility and mission, wasted a lot of valuable resources that can be used, and failed to live up to the expectations and trust of everyone.
