The Sahara Desert, which covers much of northern Africa, has experienced changes in temperature and humidity over the past few hundred thousand years.

Although the Sahara today is very dry, it is expected that in about 15,000 years, it will be turned back into an oasis.

Why does it snow in the desert Think of the desert, people's first reaction is heat and drought. In fact, desert snow, while uncommon, can also occur. Temperatures in the desert can drop sharply overnight, but any snowfall usually melts early the next day. The same weather scene was seen in Algeria this month, with cold air from high-pressure systems moving overland into the desert, causing temperatures to drop. Such anticycles tend to reach Saudi Arabia by moving clockwise from Central Asia, absorbing moisture en route and forming snow after cooling. Snow fell in the Sahara and Saudi Arabia in 2022 and January 2021, but this isn't the first time these usually hot and hot places have been shrouded in white. Ain-Severa has seen this phenomenon in 2021, 2018 and 2017, after the last snowfall recorded was in 1979. Temperatures in the town typically range from 12 degrees Celsius in the coldest January to close to 40 degrees Celsius in July. While Saudi Arabia's Asir region snowed for the first time in half a century last January, it has also snowed elsewhere in the Desert Kingdom in recent years.
