In the second half of 1952, the Korean War began to enter a stalemate.
Faced with such a grim situation, Commander-in-Chief Peng Dehuai said this to Qin Jiwei, commander of the Fifteenth Army:
"If there were no Five Sacred Mountains, we would have retreated two hundred kilometers and there would be no danger to defend." It can be said that whoever loses the Five Holy Mountains will be responsible for the defeat of this war! ”
At that time, the US army had already captured the "Blood Ridge" and the "Sadness Ridge" continuously, and the Five Holy Mountains were their next target. At 3:30 a.m. on October 14, 1952, U.S. General Van Vleet commanded the U.S. army to begin the offensive.
This battle is called the "Battle of Shangganling" by our side, and the "Battle of Triangle Mountain" by the United States.
A warrior who is even "harder" than Huang Jiguang

The forward troops of the Forty-fifth Division suffered too many casualties to retreat into the tunnels, and the surface positions were all lost. Fifteen of these infantry companies had all been crippled, and the largest number was still about thirty, and the few were less than one squad.

Long Shichang

At Position 0, sixteen surviving six companies of the 135th Regiment, who suffered casualties during the blast of the enemy bunker. Among them, the remaining personnel of the sixth company are: Zhang Guangsheng, chief of staff of the battalion; Feng Yuqing, instructor of the sixth company; Wan Fulai, commander of the sixth company; Wu Sanyang, the correspondent of the company; and Huang Jiguang, the battalion correspondent we are familiar with.
Everyone has heard the deeds after that, but in fact, Huang Jiguang did not shout out the slogan that made people's blood boil: Let the people of the motherland wait for our good news. They blew up three bunkers, and Huang Jiguang was already injured seven times when he climbed in front of the last bunker.
He lifted his upper body up with force, and the instructor Feng Yuqing understood what he was going to do, and shouted loudly: "Quick, Huang Jiguang wants to block the gun hole." In fact, after the sacrifice, Huang Jiguang's body did not bleed, and there was not much blood in front of the bunker, and his blood was basically flowing on the crawling path.
When the people are exhausted, they must also guard the main peak
On the morning of the 20th, the enemy once organized a counterattack, and at this time the 45th Division no longer had a complete company structure, and all infantry companies suffered more than half casualties. However, the seventeen battalions that the U.S. army began to invest also suffered as many as seven thousand casualties, and each company had less than forty men left.
Wilson, a U.S. military reporter, reported:
The company commander called for names, but only one sergeant and one private were answered.
On the night of December 24, General Qin Jiwei directly replenished the guard company to the first tunnel, a total of more than 120 people, and it was the surviving volunteer soldiers in the tunnel who won the time for the rear to counterattack.
On 30 October, we finally deployed more than a hundred heavy artillery pieces to bombard the enemy positions with the number of shells per second. Captain Nikki of the U.S. Seventh Division once told reporters accompanying the army:
"The artillery fire of the Chinese volunteers was as terrible as rain. We had no hiding place at all. ”
But he didn't think that on October 14th our fighters were bombarded with six shells per second...
Finally, five hours later, the Chinese volunteers recaptured the main peak.
Later, the US army launched as many as forty attacks, and the ten companies just added by the 45th Division were all destroyed, but then with the reinforcements of the last company of the 45th Division in place, the US army was basically countered by our army. Until 3 p.m., company commander Zhao Heilin wrote a report on the body of the enemy and sent him back to the headquarters:
We had consolidated the main peak, and the enemy could no longer come up.
That is, on the same day, the Americans frankly and helplessly admitted to the outside world: "So far, the US military has lost this battle." ”
A miracle on the battlefield
Throughout the campaign, our aircraft and tanks did not participate in the battle at all! Even the last artillery input was only a quarter of that of the U.S. army: the U.S. army fired more than 1.9 million shells, and more than 5,000 aerial shells, while our army fired only more than 400,000 shells.
Postscript: After the victory of this battle, the U.S. army never launched a battalion-sized attack again. Therefore, the war situation in the Korean battlefield was basically stable at the 38th parallel. It can be said that this battle laid the northern boundary of The Southern Frontier of Korea.
