The world-famous Battle of Shangganling took place in 1952, which had lasted for two years, and after several contacts, volunteers and U.S. troops were fully familiar with the conventions of their opponents. Why did the U.S. military choose to attack Shangganling instead of the Western Mountains? Judging from the historical data of the US military, most of the reasons are due to logistical support: Shangganling is only 7 kilometers away from the city of Jinhua occupied by the "Allies". The only road from Jinhua to Jincheng must pass below it. Roads can support the transportation of vehicles, which is very convenient. The rear ammunition depot is supplied directly to the front. U.S. forces at sea have filled their stocks of ammunition, and this "support" has filled the eighth group commander Van Vleet with confidence.
In fact, the growing modern logistics support has indeed given great support to the us military. According to historical records, at the beginning of the first day of the Battle of Shangganling, the "coalition forces" fired nearly 300,000 shells. Many people may not be able to imagine what a concept of 300,000 is, which is equivalent to a two-ton truck that needs to carry a load of 2250 times to reach it. Such frightening logistical support was unimaginable at the time.
But what the U.S. military never expected was that even under such fierce fire, the volunteers resisted their attacks, and that was because of the use of tunnel tactics.
The tunnel was created by the volunteer army in the campaign to resist US aggression and aid Korea, and the combat results can be said to be impressive. According to the memoirs of military commander Qin Jiwei, when a tunnel of more than 30 meters thick was built in the Battle of Shangganling, it was completely resistant to the bombardment of US artillery shells, and a large amount of ammunition could be stored in the pipeline, so the US army also suffered a lot of losses.
However, the fierce war situation has made the use of ammunition far more than planned, and logistical support has become the focus of the current war to win or lose.
When the volunteers realized this problem, they organized meetings overnight and shifted their main combat forces to the Five Holy Mountains. The logistics support was a transportation route made by the warlord Hong Xuezhi himself. The production of this route is also made of countless blood pads.
In fact, the U.S. military is not unaware of the fact that one of the most frightening points about tunnel tactics is closure. During the campaign, the U.S. military also directed its fire on the logistical support routes of the volunteers. According to the relevant historical records, due to the emergency situation at that time, the materials were carried by the soldiers with their bodies, which can be said to be a task that is more fierce and less auspicious.
In the moment of danger in Shangganling, because the cost of manually passing through the closed line is very high, many soldiers will carry ammunition with them, transport the materials to the tunnels and directly enter the battle. Such a heavy casualty ratio caused the Fifteenth Army to establish the same criterion: Whoever can send a fruit into the tunnel will be given a second-class merit!
Even in this case, the Volunteers thought of confrontational methods, such as the "segmented transport method". In addition, villagers near the Five Holy Mountains also organized a procession of more than 8,000 people to transport supplies.
