In winter, the mountains in southwest Qianxi are full of rain, and sometimes it can rain for more than a month. Song Xiaochuan, a police officer in Changping, Beijing, is not quite used to the cold here.

On the green field of Luguan Primary School in Xingren City, several children wore thick down jackets and ran from one end of the field to the other with the ball. Like other aided primary schools, Luguan Primary School also has a beautiful new football field, but suffers from a lack of experienced football teachers. Song Xiaochuan, who studied football as an undergraduate, and his colleagues changed that, and they set up two football teams at the school.

There are more than 1,300 students in Luguan Primary School, almost all of whom come from families that have been relocated to help the poor. Because their parents work outside the home all year round, many students board in long-term nursery classes around the school and only return home once a semester.

After registration and selection, two male and female campus football teams with 100 team members were quickly formed. More than an hour after the afternoon class, it is the training time of the football team. Training day after day, the basic skills and physical fitness of the team members have been rapidly improved.

Sport has also reshaped the character of children. Because her parents work outside the home, jiajia, a member of the women's football team, has lived independently since the third grade of primary school and is usually unattended. Jiajia used to be absent from school, and initially her homeroom teacher worried that she would not be able to stick to football training. "Let's try it first." Song Xiaochuan's words changed the trajectory of Jiajia's life.

After less than a year of training, Jiajia repeatedly won the best scorer, and she no longer missed class, and she also agreed with Song Xiaochuan that she would be admitted to a university in Beijing in the future. Another female soccer player, Da Hong, comes from a single-parent family and walks three kilometers to school with her younger siblings every day, with an introverted personality. "When I first arrived at the team, I said 10 words to her, and she didn't answer, just kept her head down." After playing football for a long time, Dahong changed like a person and began to interact with his classmates, much more lively.

In 2021, the men's and women's soccer teams of Luguan Primary School won the first place in the autumn league of Xingren City's campus football pilot schools, and after watching the game, the principal of a local key high school said that he wanted to admit the team members to the middle school.

"Although it is impossible for every child to change their fate by playing football, even if one or two children can change their fate through this sport, go to high school, go to college, and thus change their destiny, it is worth it." Song Xiaochuan said.

Make kids fall in love with English

In the English interest class of a township school in southwest Qianxi, fourth-grade children are competing in English sitcoms. Their instructor was Xing Zhimin, a police officer at the Machikou Police Station of the Changping Public Security Bureau.

Xing Zhimin studied English as an undergraduate and passed the English major level 8 examination. After graduation, Xing Zhimin became an internal police officer. When he learned that he wanted to select the police to go to Guizhou to support teaching, Xing Zhimin decided to sign up and passed the selection to become a member of the 18-member volunteer teaching group and came to Pu'an County.

The Pu'an County Dongcheng District Ethnic Experimental School, where Xing Zhimin teaches, is located on a flat land between the mountains, with advanced hardware facilities, but the school is still more than 30 minutes away from the county seat. Many of the students here are left-behind children, "some students are carried by older brothers and sisters, lack of love and companionship, and need more encouragement to let them answer questions." ”

The students' cultural classes are slightly weak and they never speak English in their daily lives. Timidity is an impression of Xing Zhimin's children. After understanding the children's situation, Xing Zhimin's English volunteer teaching focused on improving the students' spoken English. The students took the initiative to sign up, and finally formed an English interest class of 30 people, which was taught every afternoon. The format of the course focuses on stimulating students' interest in learning, and songs, games, videos, animations are integrated into the daily English class...

In the Pu'an County 2021 English Speaking Competition, two students supervised by Xing Zhimin and his colleagues won the first prize in the primary school senior group and the second prize in the lower grade group respectively.

In the last English class of the first semester, a girl suddenly began to shed tears in class. Xing Zhimin was a little stunned and quickly asked the reason. It turned out that she thought Teacher Xing was leaving, so she was very sad. "The children's feelings are very sincere and direct." During class, Xing Zhimin often received small gifts stuffed by children, which may be an orange, a small candy or a small leather band, which Xing Zhimin treasured one by one.

According to the original plan, this year Xing Zhimin will return to Beijing after more than a year of volunteer teaching life, but the innocence of the children in the mountains makes her extremely reluctant. Xing Zhimin hopes that even if he leaves, the children will continue to love English and live a positive and optimistic life.
