Bucking the trend: the epidemic hits the car market as SAIC MG doubled sales in Australia

Reference News Network reported on January 17 that the British "Daily Mail" website recently reported that although the global supply crisis has seriously affected other car manufacturers, the sales of Chinese-made MG (MG) brand cars in Australia will double in 2021.

The MG, once a sports car in the UK, became Australia's 9th-largest car brand by sales last year, underscoring Australia's growing dependence on China for another manufactured product.

According to the Commonwealth Chamber of Automobile Industry in Australia, MG is the only brand to double sales in 2021, with sales of 39,025 units, compared to 15,253 units in 2020.

According to the report, MG is now a car brand under SAIC Motor, and the market share of the brand's cars has also increased from 1.7% to more than 1 times to 3.7%.

MG MG is now selling better than Subaru and Honda, but sales still lag behind Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, Ford, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Volkswagen.

The new MG ZS was Australia's No. 8 best-selling car in December, with sales of this SUV rising to 1,980 units last month, compared to 1,010 in December 2020.

Its sales have almost doubled, growing by 96% in one year.

The MG3 also dominates the Australian light vehicle market.

Among Australia's top 10 models sold in December, sales of six models fell year-on-year due to a global shortage of computer chips and factory shutdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic that hampered car production.

Tony Weber, chief executive of the Australian Federal Chamber of Automobile Industry, said it was a problem.

"The global shortage of microprocessors, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, has had an impact on car sales across Australia," he said. ”

"Automakers are continuing their efforts to strengthen their supply chains in 2022," he said. (Compiler/Song Caiping)
