For the respective camps, in fact, two relationships have been formed, on the one hand, the two superpowers control the member states very strictly, and do not allow any subversion and betrayal, and even the model and national system cannot be changed. On the other hand, these small states are dependent on the two superpowers, which must ensure their security and be able to act in a timely manner to protect them in the event of danger. Most typically, the Soviet Union had a responsibility to protect countries within the Warsaw Pact system, such as Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Poland, including their leaders. But when Romania's president was shot in 1989, why didn't the Soviet Union come to the rescue? In fact, there are three main reasons.
During the Cold War, especially in the 60s and 70s, within the Warsaw Pact countries, many countries were in turmoil, and even crisis to the Soviet model. At that time, hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, etc. all broke out fierce events, for which the Soviet Union immediately sent troops to suppress and support its own proxies to become presidents to stabilize the situation.
Among them, Ceausescu of Romania, who followed the most loyal and longest leader of the Soviet Union. Ceausescu reigned for more than 20 years, has always adhered to the Soviet system and model, and even learned from the Soviet Union to engage in a cult of personality and other actions, is a relatively stable and prosperous country in the Warsaw Pact system. Moreover, Ceausescu's relationship with the successive leaders of the Soviet Union was very good, and for this reason, the West hated Ceausescu to the bone and wanted to get rid of it quickly.
The Ceausescu incident in 1989 was actually a subversive act by Western countries. According to the current documents revealed, it was actually the CIA of the United States at that time that planned the overthrow of Ceausescu, constantly denigrated Ceausescu, and constantly encouraged the people to resist, and finally Ceausescu was overthrown, and was directly sentenced to death for treason and so on.
At that time, Ceausescu and his wife were directly shot more than 100 times, and at this time, the Soviet Union had not yet disintegrated, and they had the strength to rescue Ceausescu. But why did the Soviet Union, the Protectorate of Romania, not come to the rescue at that time? In fact, the reason is very simple, mainly three points.
First, personal grudges.
Ceausescu, though loyal to the Soviet Union, was completely absent during Gorbachev's time. Because Gorbachev has developed a new thinking, and Ceausescu, who believes that this new thinking is Westernization, is very dangerous, and constantly criticizes this policy.
Therefore, this made Gorbachev very unhappy at that time, just as our country did not agree with Khrushchev's denial of Stalin. Khrushchev was very angry, and Gorbachev was even more so, and even hoped that Ceausescu would fall. So when Ceausescu was shot, the Soviets stood idly by and did not come to the rescue.
Second, there is no time for self-care.
At that time, because of Gorbachev's new thinking, in fact, the entire Soviet Union was already in crisis, especially the fierce struggle within the Party, including the conservatives who insisted on the Soviet Union, and the direct struggle of the dissolutionists such as Yeltsin. There was even an internal coup d'état, and more seriously, the entire Baltic Region, as well as the Caucasus, had actually begun the process of disintegration. So the Soviet Union at that time was too busy to rescue Ceausescu.
Third, surrender to the West.
According to the entire documentation of the events in Romania at that time, the United States obtained Gorbachev's acquiescence or consent before implementing this policy and subversive action. Because at that time, Gorbachev had completely turned to the West, and the entire democratization and marketization were completely learning from the West.
Therefore, under the overall policy of disintegrating the Soviet Union and falling to the West, the Soviet Union could not sabotage the actions of the West, and it was afraid of offending the United States and Europe. In the color revolutions in Eastern Europe promoted by the West at that time, the Soviet Union chose a silent and acquiescence attitude, allowing the Actions of the West and the subversion of Romania and the shooting of Ceausescu.
