However, although the supreme commander ran away, at this time the Kuomintang still had more than 72,000 defenders in Taiyuan, and these Kuomintang soldiers were ordered to die in Taiyuan.

On April 20 of the same year, the People's Liberation Army began to launch a campaign to liberate Taiyuan. In this campaign, Sulu's 184th Division took on the main offensive task.
If the People's Liberation Army wanted to break into Taiyuan City, it had to seize the East Gate of Taiyuan, and the Kuomintang had a stronghold outside the gate, which was called because the stronghold was inside a red house

This stronghold was easy to defend and difficult to attack, because it was an open area before, there was no concealment at all, and the troops could only adopt the tactics of the sea of people to break through, so our army caused a lot of casualties.
From the beginning of the battle, the 184th Division organized three surprise attacks but failed to break through, and was repelled by the powerful fire fired from the Red House stronghold, and failed to take the stronghold after paying heavy casualties.
Faced with the dying struggle of the Kuomintang in the stronghold and the stubborn resistance of relying on the strong fortifications, Sulu, the deputy division commander in the command post, seemed very anxious.
In a hurry, Sulu knocked on the table with the division commander and the political commissar and said:
"I'll go to the front line to see what's going on."
Without turning back, he passed through the position all the way forward and hurried along the position.

When Sulu and Shi Yunfeng came to the front of the Red House stronghold, they studied the terrain together and formulated countermeasures, and after the two began to pick up their guns and personally lead the assault platoon to plan to take down the enemy's Red House stronghold in one fell swoop.
Although the offensive route chosen by Sulu and Shi Yunfeng was very reasonable, unexpectedly, the Kuomintang planted a large number of infantry mines here.
Under the command of the assault platoon leader, the assault platoon first cleared two more obvious mines, and then inadvertently stepped on the serial mines located in the hidden place during the advance.
As soon as this thunder exploded, other mines on the open ground immediately followed suit, and the explosions were immediately connected.
In the explosion of a group of mines, Shi Yunfeng was killed on the spot due to evasion in time, and Sulu's right arm was also shattered by the mine, and blood rushed down like an unclosed faucet...
However, it was precisely because the soldiers of the assault platoon led by Sulu and Shi Yunfeng used blood and lives to detonate the entire minefield that the passage was opened.
The follow-up troops immediately shouted along the open passage and rushed up, wiping out the stubborn enemy of the Red House stronghold in one fell swoop, and then captured the Red House stronghold.

After arriving at the field hospital, Sulu really couldn't hold on to fainting, because his injuries were too serious, so his right arm could no longer be saved, and the doctors for his life safety.

Four days later, Taiyuan was finally liberated. Taiyuan was captured, and the troops were soon on their way to the next battlefield.
Before leaving, Sulu's guard Deng Tianshun ran to the hospital to see Sulu, and he touched Sulu's right sleeve, which had become empty, with one hand, and wanted to stop talking.
Sulu looked at the uncomfortable guard, patted him on the shoulder and said:
"Don't be sad, this is nothing, one arm is missing, and it will not affect me to do the revolution!"
By the time Sulu recovered from his wounds and was discharged from the hospital, his 184th Division had already marched with the large army to the Great Northwest Battlefield.
At first, Sulu wrote to the organization, saying that although he only had one arm left, he could still do the revolution, so he planned to return to the original troops to continue to work, and then go to the battlefield.
However, Sulu's request was not answered, and the chairman of the Shanxi Provincial People's Government personally ran to the field hospital to talk to him, and the meaning was very clear:
Don't fight, stay, stay in Shanxi and work.
Although Sulu was reluctant, he finally obeyed the arrangement given to him by the organization.
So in October 1949, just after the founding of New China, Sulu was appointed commander of the Changzhi Military Sub-district and asked him to carry out the work of the people's armed forces.
After working like this for several years, in the spring of 1955, the commander and political commissar of the Shanxi Provincial Military Region approached him one after another and gently conveyed the organizational orders to him, namely:

Now that he was to be stripped from the local army to recuperate and completely detach from the army, he was completely unacceptable in his mentality.
No matter what he did at home, he always felt as if he was missing something, so under the left and right thoughts, Sulu decided to find a job, and Sulu really liked the atmosphere of the army, although he was disabled, but Zhi was not disabled at all.
Sulu said to the leaders of the provincial military district:
"You let me squat at home, I can't squat, I'm the kind of person who can't stay idle, if you always let me recuperate at home and don't do anything, I guess I will be seriously ill." So I asked the organization to give me a job, even if I was asked to see the warehouse, I think it would be good to see the warehouse. ”
As soon as the leaders of the provincial military district heard him, they waved their hands and disagreed, because he knew that Sulu had left in the position of commander of the military sub-district, and if Sulu joined the work again and went to see the warehouse, it would be equivalent to demotion.
After all, the warehouse is also a regimental unit, and the supreme commander breaking through the sky is also a regimental position, which is very different from the treatment of the commander when Sulu left, so the leader did not agree with him.
Seeing that the leader did not agree with him, Sulu quickly explained:
"This is not a matter of position or non-position, nor does it have anything to do with the treatment of non-treatment, I only want a job, as long as there is a job to do, the position is not concerned."
No matter how much Sulu begged, the leaders resolutely disagreed. But Sulu has been grinding him, and at Sulu's insistence, the leaders of the provincial military district have no choice but to reflect Sulu's requirements to their superiors.

Seeing that the state wanted to award titles to meritorious ministers, Sulu was naturally envious.
However, he did not have any excessive non-division, after all, he had left the team since 1949, and then failed to participate in the remaining bandits, the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
In the end, even the commander of the military sub-district could not do it, and now he was just a regimental cadre, guarding the warehouse, no matter how the wheel was, he could not take his turn to confer the title, if he could go, it almost only existed in the dream.
So Sulu suppressed his mentality and dutifully did the warehouse management work.

At first, Sulu could not believe this news, but after explaining it, he understood that the award of military ranks did not depend on what positions and jobs were held after the founding of New China, but on the contributions made in the history of the CPC.

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Sulu was also active in the front line of killing devils to protect the country, participating in battles such as the Hundred Regiments War.
On the battlefield, Sulu always took the lead in every battle, always leading the charge, and in every battle he was heroically killing the enemy, listening to the sound of bullets whistling and rubbing his scalp.
No matter how dangerous the battle situation, he can calmly deal with it, and his heart is not affected at all.
In the period of the Liberation War, Sulu fought heroically, especially in the Battle of Jinzhong in 1948, Sulu performed very well.
At that time, the battle between the two sides entered a scorching state, and after studying and judging, our army believed that the Kuomintang troops in Yan Xishan would definitely flee north with their own troops in order to change the situation on the battlefield.
If you let these people run, the consequences are unimaginable. But if you arrange for troops to follow their butt kicks and block in front of them, you will have to pay a huge sacrifice, after all, Yan Xishan's department at that time was known as the elite of the Kuomintang.
Just as everyone was discussing how to solve it, Sulu stepped forward at this time, believing that although there would be heavy losses in the siege of Yan Xishan's department, it was necessary to do so.
Therefore, Sulu decided to accept the task of encircling and intercepting the Kuomintang Yan Xishan department.

After taking over the task, Sulu led his troops into action.
In order to be able to slow down the marching speed of Yan Xishan's mechanized troops, Sulu Bu spared no effort and used his feet to defeat the four wheels of Yan Xishan's troops, preemptively reached the designated location and blew up the bridge on the road that Yan Xishan had to pass.
Without the bridge, the road of Yan Xishan's department could not advance, and it could only hide by the river and ambush the Sulu department and rush to repair the bridge.
Yan Xishan's troops were worthy of being the ace troops, they were fully equipped, and when they saw that the bridge was broken, they immediately began to repair the work in the midst of the war.
At that time, the number of Yan Xishan troops was several times that of the Sulu army, and seeing that the bridge would not be repaired well for a while and a half, they were ambushed by the Sulu army, and in desperation, they began to launch the fiercest attack on the Sulu troops.

However, the Sulu Department was even more a tough guy's army, and no matter whether the enemy army was superior in numbers or weapons, Sulu's troops did not flinch and heroically fought with the Kuomintang Yan Xishan to the death.
The enemy saw that the pursuing troops behind were approaching, but the "road blocker" Sulu in front of him could not attack for a long time, so he began to call for all kinds of support and called for aircraft to join the battle.
The enemy's fighters dropped one bomb after another on the positions built by the Sulu department, and under such difficult conditions, the Sulu department still held out for four days and four nights under the leadership of Sulu, at the cost of more than half of the casualties to the follow-up main force, and the common people won enough time to move.
In the battle, Sulu dared to fight even more, he personally went to the front line to fight, saw the enemy's planes flying, he raised the machine gun again and again to shoot into the air, after shooting the plane and then changed to shooting the enemy, repelling the enemy who intended to seize the position by the plane.
Just like that, he carried it until the large troops came to support the Sulu Department, and then counterattacked the enemy with a single blow and defeated the enemy army.
Sulu has made great achievements. However, Sulu, who had made such a meritorious contribution, replied from the bottom of his heart when he was confronted with the title of Premier Zhou Enlai:
"I actually can't do enough, the people have given me too much."

After that, Sulu worked in this position for 20 years, until 1975 before taking a back seat.
In December 1976, General Sulu died of illness in Shanxi at the age of 74.
