At sotheby's in London in June 2021, the box of 1974 sunflower guizhou Moutai wine sold for £1 million (about RMB 9 million), setting a record for the highest price ever for a single batch of Moutai wine outside Of China.
As a Moutai, why did TA attract the attention of the curatorial team?
Originally, after the founding of New China, Moutai Liquor shouldered the heavy responsibility of diplomacy and export foreign exchange. In 1957, Guizhou Moutai liquor began to be exported, the earliest use of the "Golden Wheel" brand trademark, and later the use of the "Feitian" brand trademark.
From 1968 to 1975, the "Sunflower" brand trademark temporarily replaced the "Feitian" brand trademark for the export sales of Guizhou Moutai wine, of which the output of "Sunflower" brand Guizhou Moutai wine in 1974 was the smallest. It was not until 1975 that the export of Moutai liquor resumed the use of the "Feitian" brand trademark.
The box of Guizhou Moutai wine exhibited in the "Wine Song - Chinese Wine Culture Exhibition" is the only known existing box of Sunflower brand Moutai wine produced in 1974, and the box and bottle of this box of wine are well preserved and of good quality, which is of great historical value.
"No wine, no banquet", "no wine, no etiquette", "no wine, no customs", since ancient times, whether it is the emperors and nobles, literati and ordinary people, they are inseparable from wine, and wine culture has long been integrated into the daily life of Chinese.
With "wine" as the core, this exhibition integrates natural customs and cultural relics in the collection, and interprets Chinese wine culture from the perspectives of etiquette, health care, customs, and export through natural specimens and bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and paintings and other collections of 254 pieces/sets (185 pieces/sets of Chinese).
The reporter noted that in the exhibition hall, the curatorial team specially designed a "smelling area", where the audience can click on the equipment at close range to smell the incense and wine.
