As the electrification process in the high-end market accelerates, the high-end/luxury car market is experiencing greater disruption than the Volkswagen market. BMW became the number one brand in the U.S. premium/luxury car market for the third consecutive year in 2021 with sales of 336,644 units.

Tesla's rivals are only BMW

It was followed by Tesla with 313,400 units, Lexus with 304,475 units, Mercedes-Benz with 276,102 units and Audi with 196,038 units.

This is a remarkable result for Tesla, which sold 936,172 units globally in 2021 (up 87.4% year-over-year). Thanks to the rapid growth of production and sales, Tesla has been able to surpass the traditional high-end/luxury brands including Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.

With market demand very high and Tesla's Texas plant about to begin mass production, Tesla expects to continue to grow rapidly, likely surpassing BMW sometime in 2022.

In 2021, the U.S. sold about 2.2 million luxury/luxury vehicles (about 14.7% of the total), which means that Tesla's share is already around 14%.

There are also objections that Tesla is not a true high-end brand because of the differences between Tesla and old-fashioned high-end/luxury brands. However, we need to go to tradition to enhance the recognition of new brands, after all, Tesla offers a lot more than most traditional mainstream brands.
