On November 21, 1404 (December 23, 1404), Zhu Di changed the domineering name of a place called "Haijin Town" to commemorate the victory of the Battle of Jingnan, a place he passed through when he raised his army. Now that he is the Son of Heaven, he renamed "Haijin Town" to "Tianjin", which means the ferry through which the Son of Heaven passes.

In the third year of Yongzheng (1725), Tianjin Weisheng became Tianjin Prefecture, and in the ninth year of Yongzheng (1731), Tianjin Prefecture was upgraded to Tianjin Prefecture, with six counties and one prefecture under its jurisdiction.
