In 710, Li Xian died suddenly, and Empress Wei and others, in order to usurp Li Tangjiangshan, placed all their cronies and clans in important posts, allowing the Wei family to grasp the power of the government.
During this period, Shangguan Wan'er, together with Princess Taiping, wrote a will, in the name of Emperor Li Xian, they made Li Chongmao crown prince and empress Wei in charge of the imperial government as empress dowager. Li Longji did not want Li Tangjiangshan to be usurped, so he directly led people into the palace and executed Empress Wei and Shangguan Wan'er and others.
