In the previous section, I explained to you zeng Yuping, the grandfather of Zeng Guofan, from a jerk to a thrifty elder, who lost the lawsuit because of his lack of education, and after being ridiculed, he invited Mr. Zeng to teach his son to read, forcing his sons to take the meritorious examination. Although he bought a homestead and built seven or eight mud-walled houses, it was not called Baiyutang at that time, and there was not even a plaque. So, how did Bai Yutang come about?
Zeng Yuping is a person with strong self-esteem, and he believes that other people's children can be admitted to Xiucai, and his children can also be. According to the explanation of the former residence of Zeng Guofan, Zeng Yuping had three sons, and the eldest was Zeng Linshu, the father of Zeng Guofan. In the second year that the Zeng family moved to Baiyutang, the second eldest of the Zeng family died of illness. The second eldest of the Zeng family, among the three children, is the most clever and the most promising person to be admitted to the meritorious name. The death of the second son dealt a great blow to Zeng Yuping, and he could only be more severe and pin his hopes on the remaining two sons.
Unfortunately, the brothers Zeng Linshu and Zeng Gaoxuan, who had belonged to the type of children who were gifted and stupid since childhood, could not read it at all, could not memorize an article for a few days, and Mr. Angry was unwilling to teach. Later Zeng Guofan was also like that.
Zeng Yuping believes that as long as you study hard, you will definitely be able to get admitted, so you are more strict with your two children. Zeng Yuping's father, Zeng Jingxi, saw that the two grandsons were so miserable and couldn't look at them anymore, so he said something, which meant:

The following year, the Zeng family added a girl, that is, Zeng Guolan, the sister of Zeng Guofan. This winter, heavy snow fell and the north wind whistled. Zeng Yuping used to get up early and go to the cowshed at the foot of the mountain to feed the cattle, and when he opened the door, he saw a person lying on the grass pile in the cowshed, and after determining that it was not a cattle thief, Zeng Yuping very politely invited the person to his home for dinner.
After the man finished breakfast, he circled around a few times in front of and behind the Zeng family's house, looked at the soap pod tree on the side, pointed to the thick wisteria wrapped around the soap pod tree, and said to Zeng Yuping: What a big python!
The soap pod tree was thick and thin in the arms of two people, and the vines wrapped around the tree were thicker than a child's arm, black, and from a distance it really looked like a big python wrapped around the tree. When the Zeng family was building a house, they thought about cutting down the tree, but then somehow they didn't cut it down, and when they saw that the children liked to play under the tree, they broke the idea of cutting down the tree.
Zeng Yuping planned to wait for the person to go out, and then give dozens of copper plates to let the other party survive this winter. Unexpectedly, the man looked up and smiled, and said to Zeng Yuping:

The man said a few good words in succession, looked at the mountain behind the house, did not speak, and went straight in. Zeng Yuping cleaned up a room and gave it to that person, serving good wine and good food every day. The man ate and slept, slept and ate. On the night of Chinese New Year's Eve, after eating Chinese New Year's Eve meal, he said to Zeng Yuping:
The green dragon looks back, the two water embraces, the flag wind hunts, the official seal is on the case, and the gate faces the belly of the green dragon, which can block the wind and enter the house. Dig out the half moon pond next to it, which can ensure the safety of the family home. Accumulating more virtue and doing good is the right way.
After saying that, the man smiled, wrote an emperor's imperial character with his hand, turned and left the Zeng family. Zeng Yuping then chased out the door, where he could still find the shadow of that person.
In the spring of the following year, Zeng Yuping asked someone to change the direction of the gate, and dug a half-moon pond in front of the original gate. He remembered the words written by the man, but the third son said that it was the imperial character, and the eldest son said that it was the word white jade. The imperial character can not be used indiscriminately, it is copied all over the door, but the two words of white jade are good, reflecting the essence of the Zeng family's cultivation and reading, and symbolizing the desire to be rich and noble in the future.
So Zeng Yuping found a piece of fir board, asked his relatives to mention the three words "White Jade Hall" and hung it above the main entrance.
According to the locals, Zeng Guofan was fully capable of driving out the Manchu Qing and becoming emperor himself, so why didn't he become an emperor?
Of course, that's just a legend. According to historical data, Zeng Guofan reached the peak of his power after pacifying the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and his subordinate generals did intend to support him in rebelling against the Manchu Qing, but he gave up that idea for many reasons. There are still many historians who are puzzled that Zeng Guofan did not take advantage of the victory and oppose the Qing.
