After years of accumulation, Henan's automobile industry has formed a complete industrial chain from parts to vehicle production, attracting well-known enterprises such as BYD, Chery, Haima, Nissan, and SAIC to settle in Henan. There are more than 600 automobile and parts enterprises above designated size in Henan

On October 9, 2021, Henan's automotive industry ushered in another happy event.

On this day, BYD Automobile Co., Ltd. bid 727 million yuan to obtain 4104 mu of industrial land in Zhengzhou, officially opening a new chapter in BYD's development in Henan. This is another well-known automobile enterprise with a manufacturing base in Henan after Nissan, Chery, Haima and SAIC.

BYD's large-scale layout in Henan reflects BYD's determination to open up new markets on the one hand, and on the other hand, it also shows that Henan has become a hot land for investment in the automobile manufacturing industry.

Soon, Henan polyfluoride, a lithium hexafluorophosphate manufacturer used in new energy vehicle batteries, issued an announcement on November 15 that it had signed a "strategic cooperation agreement" with BYD. BYD intends to purchase lithium hexafluorophosphate products with a total quantity of not less than 56,050 tons from polyfluoride from January 2022 to December 2025.

Up to now, there are more than 600 automobile and parts enterprises above designated size in Henan Province, and 17 existing vehicle manufacturers, with an annual output of more than 580,000 vehicles and an industrial scale of 200 billion yuan. New energy vehicles as a whole are in the first phalanx of the country.

Driven by Zhengzhou Yutong, SAIC Zhengzhou, Dongfeng Nissan, Kaifeng Chery and other backbone enterprises, the cluster effect of Henan automobile industry has been continuously highlighted, and the development of vehicles in the province has shown a common development trend with Zhengzhou as the mainstay, Kaifeng as the supplement, and Xuchang, Luoyang, Sanmenxia and other places. Among them, Zhengzhou's vehicle production accounts for 80% of the province.

Jiaozuo, Xinxiang, Hebi and other places gathered a large number of parts and components backbone production enterprises, steering, power batteries and other more than 10 kinds of parts and components product output ranked in the forefront of the country, Tianhai Group automotive wiring harness, electronic plug parts domestic market share remained above 20%.

In fact, not only in vehicle manufacturing, auto parts, lithium batteries and other aspects of remarkable achievements, in the intelligent network, fuel vehicles Henan has also made good achievements.

In terms of fuel vehicles, Henan's fuel cell bus performance is leading in China, and the hydrogen energy equipment and fuel cell key components industries are gathered and developed in Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Kaifeng, Xinxiang and other places.

Increase the matching rate of localized parts

In November 2021, the General Office of the Henan Provincial Government issued the Implementation Plan for Accelerating the Development of the New Energy Vehicle Industry in Henan Province, which will take effective measures to actively promote the realization of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and accelerate the development of the new energy automobile industry.

In terms of industrial scale, by 2025, the annual output of new energy vehicles in the province will exceed 300,000, and strive to reach 500,000, and the total demonstration operation of fuel cell vehicles will strive to exceed 10,000, and build a 100-billion-level Zhengkai new energy automobile industry cluster.

Industry experts said that first of all, we must continue to give play to the driving effect of backbone enterprises, accelerate the transformation of industrial base advantages to industrial chain supply chain advantages, and change the scale advantage of domestic demand to the synergistic advantages of supply and demand, so as to maximize the realization of Yu materials and Yu yu materials.

According to Ding Bo, general manager of the Zhengzhou branch of SAIC Passenger Car, since the batch production in 2017, SAIC has used 50 months to produce and sell 1 million units in Zhengzhou, with an output value of nearly 70 billion yuan, and has become the largest production base of SAIC passenger cars.

As a leader in China's bus industry, Yutong Bus is the world's largest new energy commercial vehicle manufacturer, ranking first in the domestic large and medium-sized bus market share for 18 consecutive years, and the global market share ranked first for 9 consecutive years. At present, it has sold more than 160,000 new energy buses.

However, the leading enterprises in Henan's automobile industry is not strong enough, for example, Yutong's localized parts matching rate in the province is only 42%, from the perspective of industrial cluster cultivation and industrial chain improvement, it is necessary to further improve the parts matching rate.

In response to this phenomenon, on November 4, 2021, Hao Jinghong, member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference of Henan Province and deputy director of the Department of Industry and Information Technology of Henan Province, said at the commercial vehicle industry chain supply and demand docking meeting: A single flower is not spring, and a hundred flowers bloom in the spring.

"Yutong Group should first be a good head goose enterprise, set a benchmark and demonstration for the province's automotive industry in digital transformation, green development, and enterprise operation and management; second, it should be a good 'chain master' enterprise, integrate and optimize the industrial chain with an open mind, gradually improve the matching rate of parts and components in the province, optimize the supply chain, and cultivate a good industrial ecology; third, it should give play to the role of the Henan Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell Vehicle Industry Research Institute, actively attract upstream and downstream enterprises to participate in the construction and operation of the industrial research institute, and explore the innovation chain. The diversified formation mode of deep integration of the industrial chain will build the industrial research institute into an innovative consortium integrating research and development, industrialization and engineering, and provide the industry with more new products, new technologies and new models. Hao Jinghong said.

Provide high-quality products and services for vehicle enterprises

While calling on key enterprises to improve the matching rate of localized parts in the province, the automotive industry chain enterprises in Henan Province should also think about the problems they face.

"Henan's automotive industry generally has problems such as weak willingness to innovate, insufficient innovation ability, small supply of new products, and slow transformation and development." Hao Jinghong said that Henan automotive industry parts and components enterprises should increase investment in research and development, constantly develop new products, new technologies, new processes, effectively improve product quality, reduce production costs, and take the initiative to provide high-quality products and services for vehicle enterprises.

In this regard, Ding Bo said that in 2022, SAIC's second engine plant will be built in Zhengzhou, with an annual output of 300,000 units after completion. At the same time, the Internet car zhiji built by SAIC Motor Group has now been rolled off the production line, and it is expected to be mass-produced in the Zhengzhou plant in the future.

"SAIC Passenger Car Zhengzhou Branch is also actively promoting cooperation with more local enterprises." Ding Bo said.

Zhao Fuquan, professor of the School of Vehicles and Transportation of Tsinghua University and dean of the Institute of Automotive Industry and Technology Strategy, said that with the changes in the development trend of the automobile industry, the automobile industry pattern has completely bid farewell to the traditional vertical linear value model of upstream suppliers, downstream dealers and intermediate automakers, and innovatively presented a major change of "multi-party participation, competitive cooperation, you have me, I have you", and new elements such as information and communication, new software and hardware technology companies and infrastructure are constantly integrated. As a result, the automobile industry has gradually evolved into a cross-mesh travel ecosystem.

Ding Bo also said that Henan's automobile industry should achieve advantage reconstruction, and from the government to enterprises, they should pay attention to the creation of industrial ecology. It is hoped that the government will innovate policies and systems to provide a good living environment for enterprises.

"In terms of enterprise innovation, enterprises should innovate and make breakthroughs in terms of technology, research and development, quality, service, etc. according to the current development trend, improve in terms of cost and efficiency, and integrate into the development ecology of the automobile industry to achieve their own virtuous circle." Ding Bo said.

In terms of new energy vehicles, Li Gaopeng, president and senior engineer of the New Energy Technology Research Institute of Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co., Ltd., said that Henan Province should make good use of the market-driven effect, systematically promote the full electrification of vehicles in the public sector, and enhance the international competitiveness of new energy commercial vehicles.

At the same time, based on the technological progress of the autonomous power system of new energy buses and the first-mover advantage of vehicle product promotion, Henan can be led by vehicle enterprises and participated by core component enterprises to systematically solve the environmental adaptability and reliability problems of new energy commercial vehicles, create an independent and controllable automobile industry chain, and cultivate globally competitive new energy commercial vehicle leading enterprises.
