Zhangjiajie, formerly known as Dayong, was an important part of the Xiang'ebian and Xiang'e-Exi base areas during the period of the agrarian revolutionary war, and was the central area of the Xiang'echuanqian base areas led by He Long, Zhou Yiqun, Guan Xiangying, Ren Bishi, Xiao Ke, and Wang Zhen.

On the evening of November 19, 1935, more than 18,000 people of the Red 2nd and 6th Armies set out from Liujiaping, Sangzhi County, under the jurisdiction of Zhangjiajie City, and began the Long March, spanning 8 provinces including Hunan, Guizhou and Sichuan, covering a journey of more than 20,000 miles.
At the end of the Long March, the Red 2nd and 6th Armies and the Red 32nd Army (renamed the former 9th Army of the Red Army) were jointly organized into the Red 2 front army, with He Long and Xiao Ke as the chief and deputy commanders, and Ren Bishi and Guan Xiang as the chief and deputy political commissars.
On October 22, 1936, the Long March of the Red 2nd Front arrived in the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia region to meet the Red 1st Front at Jiangtai Fort in Xiji County, Ningxia.
The Red 2 Front was one of the three main forces of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, and the only front unit in the Long March of the Red Army that did not suffer losses.

Under the influence of Jian Xianren, her own sister Jian Xianfo and her brother Jian Xianchao also joined the Red Army led by He Long.

In October 1935, He Long led the Red 2nd and 6th Armies to launch the Battle of Jinjin (City) and Li (County) in the East, which ended in victory, and good news was frequently reported. On November 1, Jian Xianren gave birth to a girl in He Long's hometown of Sang Zhihong Jiaguan. Wang Zhen, the political commissar of the Red 6 Corps who remained at Hongjiaguan, drafted a playful telegram and sent it to He Long, chairman of the Xiang'echuanqian Military Commission branch: "Congratulations to the chairman on getting a mortar!" ”

Soon, He Long and Ren Bishi decided to implement a strategic shift in the main forces of the Red 2 and 6 Armies and began the Long March.
