Create with tears
In late April 1964, General Xiao Hua, then deputy director of the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army, came to the shores of West Lake in Hangzhou. As a result of long-term overload, he developed severe hepatitis. Through the arrangement of the Central Military Commission, Xiao Hua and his wife Wang Xinlan came to the West Lake for recuperation.
For the Long March, Xiao Hua has unforgettable memories. He has always wanted to create a work showing the Long March, but he was busy with his work and never began to write. This time, Xiao Hua finally had the opportunity to realize his dream.
After some deliberation, Xiao Hua decided to create in the form of a group of poems. Subsequently, from the historical process of the Long March, he selected 12 most representative events such as the Zunyi Conference, the Four Crossings of Chishui and the Crossing of Snowy Mountains and Grasslands, and completed the overall structure of the group of poems.
Xiao Hua's wife, Wang Xinlan, witnessed the entire process of his creation.
When Wang Xinlan was 9 years old, he plucked up enough courage to find the local party organization. Two years after joining the Red Army, Wang Xinlan began the Long March with the Red Fourth Front, and was the youngest female Red Army on the Long March.

My mother once said a sentence: "Other people's long march is to come with two legs, and my long march is to lead the horse's tail to run!" "Because her two little legs really can't keep up with the adults, she can only run, so she is very difficult."
Wang Xinlan's special Long March experience provided a lot of inspiration for Xiao Hua's creation. When Xiao Hua wrote about "Passing over the Snowy Mountains and Meadows", the female Red Army who had crossed the snowy mountains twice and the meadows three times gave him a good inspiration.

Xiao Hua asked his wife, "Then tell me about your crossing of the snowy mountains and meadows, what do you think?" His wife said: "At that time, it was a small doll, I couldn't think about it a lot, and it felt like it was cold, hungry and endless." Xiao Hua said: "It's okay", and then all of a sudden, he wrote the lyrics of "snowy, wild, cold plateau, and cooking and grain".

When I wrote "Long March Suite", I don't know how many tears I shed. For example, the "Farewell" scene, the "Zunyi Conference (Radiant)", the "(Passing) Snowy Mountain Meadow" scene, and the "Annunciation", the Second and Fourth Fronts Army's northward march and the "General Division" are all written with tears in my eyes.
The confusion and reluctance when forced to leave the base area, the difficult march, the cruel battle, the heroic sacrifice of comrades-in-arms, the hardships and dangers when crossing the snowy mountains and meadows, and the scenes on the Long March Road evolved into Xiao Hua's poems full of affection.

Later, my mother called Premier Zhou Enlai to report on the situation, and Premier Zhou Enlai instructed: "Comrade Xiao Hua, I ordered you, you can no longer write." "That being said, my father couldn't stop at all.

Reciprocate with songs
After dozens of days and nights of hard work, 12 groups of poems were finally created and named "Long March Group Poems - The Red Army Is Not Afraid of Expeditionary Difficulties". Xiao Hua asked his secretary to send the first draft to Beijing for comments from relevant departments, and then revised it seven or eight times, and it was not finalized until mid-November.
Subsequently, Xiao Hua decided to compose a song for him. He specially assigned this task to the Comrades-in-Arms Cultural and Labor Corps of the Beijing Military Region, and asked to create a song that was relatively popular, easy to learn and easy to sing, and had national characteristics.
After receiving the task, the Comrades-in-Arms Cultural and Labor Corps immediately made arrangements and decided to compose the first 10 poems of the Long March in the "Long March Group Poems" by the composers Chen Geng, Sheng Mao, Tang Hao, deputy regiment leaders with rich experience in vocal composition, and Yu Qiu, who was good at writing the parts of the voice part.
In early April 1965, the composition was finally completed. They changed the title of Xiao Hua's original work "Long March Group Poem" to "Long March Group Song". Subsequently, the four composers went to Hangzhou with the first draft to report to Xiao Hua, and in order to fully show the effect of the creation, the four of them formed a temporary singing group.
In the next few days, Xiao Hua spent a morning explaining two lyrics every morning, telling the creative process and musical requirements of the group poems word by word, and telling in detail the historical story corresponding to the lyrics during the Long March. Talking about the scene when he forcibly crossed the Dadu River, he left a deep impression on Yu Qiu.

Accept the review
On July 19, 1965, the Comrades-in-Arms Cultural and Labor Troupe went to the Tianjin People's Auditorium to rehearse the "Long March Suite Song" and was reviewed by lyricist Xiao Hua.
