After separating from Wang Xinlan, the main force of the Red Army of more than 30,000 people was reorganized into the Eighth Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army, and soon changed to the Eighteenth Group Army. The headquarters of the Red Army was also changed to the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army. In late August 1937, the Red Army reorganization and anti-Japanese oath meeting were held in the large playground of Yunyang Town Middle Street, and on September 6 of that year, from Yunyang, through Sanyuan, Fuping, Chengcheng and Heyang, they reached Hancheng to cross the Yellow River in the east and went to the anti-Japanese front.
In June 1938, Xiao Hua was appointed commander and political commissar of the Anti-Japanese Advance Column of the Eighth Route Army. In mid-July of that year, he led an eastward anti-Japanese column through the Tongpu Road, across the Taihang Mountains, across the Jinpu Line, and deep into the Jilu Plain behind the enemy. At that time, the chairman of the National Shandong Province heard that Xiao Hua was only 22 years old and called Xiao Hua a "doll commander". Since then, the title of "Doll Commander" has spread among the troops.
The revolutionary experience brought two young hearts together and seemed to require only common experiences and not too many reasons to fall in love. In the interval between battles, Xiao Hua often took out Wang Xinlan's photo and looked at it in a daze, but he could not write to Wang Xinlan. After graduating from the "Kang Da", Wang Lanxin was arranged to study at the communication school, and after graduation, he was arranged to work as a news operator in the Yan'an Red China News Agency (the predecessor of Xinhua News Agency), and wanted to write to Xiao Hua but did not know where Xiao Hua was.
