He has successively won the honorary titles of Master of Art in China's Industrial and Art Industry, Master of Arts and Crafts of Gansu Province, and Leading Talent of Jiuquan City, and was awarded the honorary title of "Flying Craftsman" by the Dunhuang Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government of the Communist Party of China in 2018.
In the change of history, Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes has poured out the lifelong efforts of countless ancient craftsmen, and has also bred generations of workers who are committed to the protection and inheritance of Dunhuang culture, and Du Yongwei is one of them.
He took root in Dunhuang, studied under many Dunhuang art masters, and continued the charm of Dunhuang art with magical hands. Over the past 40 years, his sculptures, with the profound heritage of Dunhuang culture, have gone from Dunhuang in the northwest to the whole country and the world.
In most of his working life, Du Yongwei has created four "most", namely, the largest colored sculpture copying - mogao grotto 158 cave 12.5 meters long reclining Buddha statue; the largest color sculpture restoration - Mogao grotto 96 cave 7 meters long buddha hand restoration; the largest color sculpture reconstruction - Yulin cave 6 cave Maitreya Buddha statue remodeling; the largest color sculpture copyer - the theme involves Buddha statues, disciple statues, bodhisattva statues, heavenly kings statues, foot Maitreya statues, offering bodhisattva statues and other various shapes of more than 100 pieces.
His designs of Dunhuang 328 Cave Bodhisattva Silver Coin Relief, Dunhuang Water Moon Guanyin and other works have won international and national awards, and his works have been collected and displayed in the Great Hall of the People and the Chinese Embassy in Australia. He has also held Dunhuang art exhibitions and solo exhibitions in Japan, India, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other countries and regions, and has become a disseminator of Dunhuang sculpture.
In 2008, Dunhuang painted sculpture technology was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage protection project in Gansu Province. Du Yongwei, as a declarant and representative of the inheritors of skills, germinated the desire to build a protection base for Dunhuang Artisan Village, hoping that Dunhuang painted sculpture, which has been passed down for more than a thousand years and is now almost endangered, can be "alive" in this village and carry forward and serve the society.
In 2018, 58-year-old Du Yongwei founded the "Mogaoli Artisan Village". He said: "I founded the Craftsman Village to make the art of Dunhuang painted sculpture survive, and I don't want to see the Dunhuang painted sculpture that 'lived' for more than a thousand years to our generation 'die'; I don't want to see people go to mogao grottoes in the future to see Dunhuang painted sculpture and sigh its beauty, asking how this clay sculpture art is made, but no one can answer!" ”
Du Yongwei personally wrote a pair of Yao Lian for the gate of his "Mogaoli Artisan Village", the content of which is: "The hidden hands in the street inherit the thousand-year-old Dunhuang stunt; the famous teachers in the courtyard inherit a Mogao spirit", which is the purpose of his construction of the artisan village, and it is also his persistence and persistence for many years.
