Xiahe County, located in the northwest of Gannan Province, has the reputation of "China's Labrang World Tibetan School". There is a long and long history of thangka art here. Thangka, figuratively referred to as "flowing murals", is an encyclopedia of Tibetan culture. As a new art of painting that emerged from the Songtsen Gampo period, Thangka has a written history of more than 1,300 years from the 7th century AD. The traditional thangka art of Xiahe Labrang has gradually formed the Mian Tang painting style and unique local characteristics in the exchange and historical inheritance with different regional cultures, especially the Han culture.

Thangka painters are known as "Laripa", meaning people who paint Buddhas or gods. Today, the Painters of Xiahe Thangka have been passed down from generation to generation, using their wisdom and sweat to make this ancient art last for thousands of years. Jiaoba Gabu is such an inheritor of the cultural memory of Xiahe.
