Although the counterattack against Vietnam was of great significance in all aspects, this did not mean that the war was without mistakes, on the contrary, it exposed many problems existing in our army. Under the influence of different geographical environments and surrounding environments, instructors often need to adopt different tactics, but some instructors in the Vietnam War did not innovate their own tactical concepts in time, which caused some unnecessary sacrifices.

In March 1979, the state sent General Song Shilun, president of the Academy of Military Sciences, to lead a group of military experts to the border of southern Xinjiang, and the purpose of Song Shilun's visit to southern Xinjiang was very clear, and his team wanted to conduct a series of investigations and inspections of the troops participating in the war on the front line, so as to discover the problems existing in the war and improve them.
After arriving in southern Xinjiang, Xu Shiyou, one of the first people song to meet with him, was one of the commanders of the counterattack against Vietnam. Xu Shiyou and Song Shilun were very closely related, and in terms of origin, both of them first joined the Eighth Route Army in Shandong, and later held the position of commander of the East China Field Army. In terms of combat style, the difference between the two styles is huge, Xu Shiyou is good at offensive warfare, and Song Shilun is good at defensive warfare. Therefore, after arriving in southern Xinjiang, the first thing Song Shilun did was to have a drink with Xu Shiyou, and then he bid farewell to Xu Shiyou and went to the front-line troops for an inspection, the inspection time was about half a month, and half a month later, Song Shilun returned to Nanning again, and the two talked again.

In general, the biggest tactical problem in the counterattack against Vietnam is still the problem of tank combat, in the past when fighting, our army mainly used backpacks to fix soldiers and heavy weapons on tanks, so as to ensure more fighters and flexible combat, the reason why you can choose such combat tactics is because the terrain was relatively flat when fighting in the past, and tanks have always been the king of this terrain.
But this tactic is completely unsuitable for Vietnamese combat, because the Vietnamese border is more mountainous, the terrain is relatively undulating, and the tanks here are often inactive, so in the entire counterattack against Vietnam, some tanks are trapped by the terrain and become the enemy's living targets, and the fighters are just fixed on the tanks, so many fighters who are too late to hide are hurt by the enemy, which causes many unnecessary casualties.
