"Pen and Ink Everywhere Broad Atmosphere- On the Art of Calligraphy and Painting in Ma Qingyuan"
Text | Kang Zheng
The most obvious difference between Ma Qingyuan's flower and bird paintings and traditional flower and bird paintings is that she often abandons the vine branches (and occasionally thick trunks) of folded branches or full branches of flowers in traditional paintings, leaving flowers and leaves alone. In other words, it is to change the linear structure into a block surface structure, forming a full-scale composition. Through comparison, we can find that the traditional folded branch flower or the whole branch flower has a more solidified composition mode, such as the common Y-shape, V-shape, X-shape, C-shape, etc., paying attention to counting white as black, counting virtual as real, paying attention to virtual spirit and rhyme. Ma Qingyuan's flower and bird paintings completely subvert the tradition, she often abandons the vine branches of flowers, and forms almost a full color block surface with flowers and leaves, giving people a sense of thickness, solidity and breadth.
