As we all know, since Du Yuming's defeat and capture, he has been imprisoned in Gongdelin for labor reform, and at the end of 1959, he became one of the first Kuomintang prisoners of war to be pardoned, and later our party not only found him a job, but also provided him with housing, and enjoyed the same treatment as senior government cadres.

In 1963, Du Yuming ushered in a great joy in his life, and with the concerted efforts of all parties, his wife Cao Xiuqing finally returned to the mainland from the United States, and the couple was reunited.
After reuniting with his wife, many old friends expressed congratulations to Du Yuming, and Du Yuming also expressed his gratitude out of courtesy, but careful people found that Du Yuming did not seem to be happy, and there seemed to be a lot of heart in his eyes.
In fact, Du Yuming's heart is like a mixture of five tastes, his wife told him two things after he returned, making him sad and angry, and he couldn't sleep at night, what was it that made this person who had experienced countless big winds and waves unable to let go? Today we will talk about this untold story.
First, Chiang Kai-shek was weak and unsympathetic
As early as 1948, when Du Yuming was appointed by Lao Jiang as the deputy commander-in-chief of Xuzhou, he had been separated from his wife's family for many years, and for more than ten years, he did not want to reunite with his family at all times, but after finally reuniting with his wife, his wife told him that since he was captured, his life and death had been unknown, and he had asked the Kuomintang authorities about his whereabouts, and only got a reply, that is, her husband was killed by the Communists, and after hearing this bad news, Cao Xiuqing's heart once faced a collapse.
She told Du that in May 1949, the elder Chiang brought a handwritten edict forcing her to take the woman to Taipei, promising to guarantee that she would provide living expenses on time every month.
In the case of not knowing whether her husband was alive or dead, and there was no place for her future life, Cao Xiuqing had no idea for a while, so she had to obey the arrangement and flew to Taipei with her in-laws and 5 children.
As a result, after arriving in Taipei, the situation was completely different from what Chiang Kai-shek described, the Kuomintang authorities only gave a small subsidy, which was far from being able to maintain the daily expenses of the family, under the huge pressure of survival, Cao Xiuqing could only come out to work and subsidize some family, but her meager salary was difficult to change the current predicament.
Cao Xiuqing once went to Song Meiling and Zhang Qun to reflect on the situation, but no one paid any attention to it.
Du Yuming's eldest son, Du Zhiren, originally studied in the United States, but because his family could not afford tuition, he could only borrow money from a bank in Taiwan, and after three years of study, he was heavily in debt, owing up to more than 7,000 yuan in bills.
In order to pay off debts and earn living expenses, Du Zhiren could only go to school during the day and work at night, and his living situation was very difficult.
Seeing that he was about to graduate in a year, the bank suddenly cut off funds for him, and Du Zhiren, who had no money to go to school, dropped out of school, and when he wrote to his mother, he cried and complained that he still needed three thousand yuan to receive his graduation diploma, hoping that his mother could help him.
Seeing that her eldest son was in trouble, Cao Xiuqing was very anxious in her heart, but she was powerless, and in desperation, she remembered Chiang Kai-shek's original promise, and after thinking about it repeatedly, she still plucked up enough courage to apply to Chiang Kai-shek for a subsidy of three thousand yuan to pay tuition fees to the eldest son, hoping that President Chiang Kai-shek would approve it for the sake of her husband's military achievements for the party and the country.
Half a month later, Chiang Kai-shek had a reply, but he only agreed to lend a thousand yuan, but also to pay in two years, Cao Xiuqing, who learned of this news, her heart suddenly became cold and half cut, she never expected Chiang Kai-shek to be so desperate, even three thousand yuan refused to help.
Cao Xiuqing only got $500 in her hand, she sent it to her son, and Du Zhiren was disappointed after receiving the check, he actually took too many sleeping pills to commit suicide, and when he learned the news of his son's suicide, Cao Xiuqing was like a thunderbolt on a sunny day, and all his illusions about Chiang Kai-shek were completely shattered.
Du Yuming listened to his wife's dictations, thinking that he had followed Chiang Kai-shek for decades after saddle, and that he had worked hard for the crumbling Chiang family dynasty in the Huaihai Campaign, but now that the times have changed, in the end he has changed such a fate, and Du Yuming felt an incomparable chill in his heart for Chiang Kai-shek's unsympathetic behavior.
Second, because the son-in-law Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize, Chiang Kai-shek and his wife, who had been cold for many years, suddenly became enthusiastic and buried Du Mu.
His wife, Cao Xiuqing, told Du Yuming one more thing, that is, since her son-in-law Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize in Physics, Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Meiling suddenly got better to her.
In 1957, shortly after Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize, Du Yuming's old mother died of illness in Taipei, and Chiang Kai-shek learned of this and buried Du's mother.
At that time, at the behest of Old Jiang, not only was the Blue Sky and White Sun Flag hanging high above Du Mu's spiritual hall, but even many high-ranking officials of the Kuomintang had written their own tributes, and there was an endless stream of people who came to mourn for a while, which made the Du family, who had been snubbed at that time, very puzzled, and even Cao Xiuqing was stunned, not knowing what old Jiang was playing.
It wasn't until she was summoned by Old Jiang that she figured out Old Jiang's true intentions.
In 1958, Song Meiling suddenly sent a car to invite Cao Xiuqing to the presidential palace, at that time Cao Xiuqing still felt a little incredible, until Song Meiling's words, let her understand the sinister intentions of the couple, only to see Song Meiling said with a smile: Mrs. Du, your son-in-law won the Nobel Prize, this is a great joy, you should go to the United States to see him, when the time comes, Yang Zhenning will be brought back to Taiwan to assist President Jiang in counterattacking the mainland.
After Song Meiling and Cao Xiuqing finished speaking, Chiang Kai-shek also came to the house and seemed to be concerned about asking the children and her physical health questions.
In the face of Chiang Kai-shek's "concern", Cao Xiuqing did not have a trace of gratitude in her heart, she had already seen through Chiang Kai-shek's true face, but only said slightly coldly: The eldest son has no money to go to school, and my health is not good.
Chiang Kai-shek then remembered that he had only given Cao Xiuqing a thousand yuan, or paid it off in two years, and he knew that Cao Xiuqing was expressing dissatisfaction with him, but he was slightly embarrassed, and he smiled and said: Oh, then slowly cultivate better.
After saying that, he turned and left.
Stained with the light of her son-in-law Yang Zhenning, Cao Xiuqing was approved to visit relatives in the United States, but there was a condition that her children could not be taken away, and she had to find two people with status as a guarantee, and once she overdue, she would be fined a huge fine.
In early 1959, Cao Xiuqing went to the United States, she did not want to return to Taiwan, a sad place, with the help of her daughter and son-in-law, she applied for a long-term residence permit, and lived in the United States for a full six years.
At the same time, Cao Xiuqing told her husband that because he was released by the Communist Party, he wrote a lot of information, which led the Taiwan authorities to accuse him of being a traitor.
Through the reform of the war criminals management center, Du Yuming's thinking has undergone earth-shaking changes, in the years of detention, he not only did not suffer discrimination and abuse, on the contrary, in life, the government cares about him everywhere, not only that, his illness was also cured by the government, when the government also sent someone to Hong Kong to spend a lot of money to buy expensive drugs for him, these he is grateful.
After his son-in-law Yang Zhenning won the Nobel Prize, the people's government took the initiative to help him contact his son-in-law who was far away in the United States and reported peace to his family, which made Du Yuming feel grateful to the party and the government.
After reuniting with his wife, he felt sad and angry at the same time, but also a little lucky, sad that the eldest son left him forever, angry that Chiang Kai-shek had two sides and three knives, it was really hateful, fortunately, he got a new life, can be a new person.
In November 1963, Zhou Enlai and Chen Yi met with Du Yuming and his wife and Puyi in the Fujian Hall of the Great Hall of the People, when Premier Zhou also cordially shook Cao Xiuqing's hand and said: Welcome to return to China and settle down!
Listening to the premier's kind words, Cao Xiuqing was so excited that he shed tears, in the many meetings after that, Premier Zhou would always ask them about their life and work and encourage them to continue to make progress, this kind of concern made Du Yuming and his wife feel very warm, and Cao Xiuqing felt that the choice to return to China was very correct.
In May 1981, Du Yuming, then a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, died in Beijing, and before his death, he instructed his wife not to emigrate to foreign countries in the future, let alone to Taiwan, but to stay on the mainland and contribute to the construction of the motherland.
