The Xi'an Incident was a major turning point in the history of China, but Zhang Xueliang, one of the initiators of the Xi'an Incident, was placed under house arrest by Chiang Kai-shek for 54 years after this, during which Chiang Kai-shek once wanted to exchange Zhang Xueliang for freedom at the cost of 3 conditions.

In December 1936, Chiang Kai-shek personally flew to Xi'an to supervise the war because of his desire to "suppress bandits", but this became the most dangerous supervision battle in his life.

After arriving in Xi'an, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng jointly launched a "military advisory" to detain Chiang Kai-shek and forced him to unite with the Communists to resist Japan.

Afterwards, Chiang Kai-shek had to accept the idea of stopping the civil war and uniting with the Communists to resist Japan, but after that, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng also ushered in a different ending.

General Yang Hucheng remained under house arrest until the liberation war, but in the end this great patriotic general was eventually sacrificed at the hands of the reactionaries of the Chiang family dynasty.

After the Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang, in order to show that he had no second thoughts, personally escorted Chiang Kai-shek to Nanjing, but as soon as he arrived in Nanjing, he was immediately imprisoned by Chiang Kai-shek.

Because Chiang Kai-shek originally called zhang Xueliang a brother and brother after marrying Zhang Xueliang in order to win zhang Xueliang over, and because there was still a considerable part of the old northeast army in the Nationalist government, Chiang Kai-shek could only give up killing Zhang Xueliang.

Moreover, There was also Song Meiling interceding for Zhang Xueliang, so that Chiang Kai-shek could only keep Zhang Xueliang under house arrest all the time.

At this time, Zhang Xueliang also stubbornly believed that as long as the War of Resistance Against Japan was won, then Chiang Kai-shek had no reason to continue to imprison himself, and he would definitely let himself out when the time came.

In 1945, after the victory of the world anti-fascist war, Chiang Kai-shek, as the leader of China, made a splash in the world, and Zhang Xueliang also felt that the time had come to be released.

In 1946, under the pressure of public opinion from all walks of life, Chiang Kai-shek decided to release Zhang Xueliang, but Chiang Kai-shek played a trick on how to release Zhang Xueliang.

Chiang Kai-shek took Zhang Xueliang to Guiyang Qianling Park, put forward three conditions to Zhang Xueliang, and said that as long as Zhang Xueliang could do it, then he would be released immediately.

These three points are: admitting that the Xi'an Incident was caused by the CCP, handing over the secret telegram that Chiang Kai-shek made Zhang Xueliang not resist during the September 18 Incident, and Zhang Xueliang must go abroad after releasing Zhang Xueliang.

Zhang Xueliang categorically refused to meet the above three demands, because the Xi'an Incident was decided by him and General Yang Hucheng together for the sake of national righteousness, and had nothing to do with others.

When Chiang Kai-shek heard Zhang Xueliang's refusal, he was also furious and immediately ordered Zhang Xueliang's continued house arrest and transferred Zhang Xueliang's secret detention location from Chongqing to Taiwan.

Since then, Zhang Xueliang has lived under the supervision of Chiang's father and son, and it was not until 1988, after Chiang Ching-kuo's death, that Zhang Xueliang slowly regained his freedom in life.

However, at this time, Zhang Xueliang had already become an old man with a broken candle.

In 2001, Zhang Xueliang died of illness in the United States at the age of 101.
